ALEXANDER
WEST JEFFERSON -- Mr. A.P. Alexander, Sr., 79, of West Jefferson, passed away Sunday, October 10, 1999 at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. A native of Wilkes County, he was the son of the late Gideon McCager Alexander and Nora Bauguess Alexander. He was self-employed as a heavy equipment operator. He was a chamber member of Midway Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Wanda Hardin Alexander; a daughter, Jeannette Key and her family, husband, Eddie and daughter, Ashley of West Jefferson; a son, Phil Alexander and his family, wife, Alma and daughter, Lauren and son, Russell of Moorehead City, N.C.; five sisters, Sybil Johnson, Mrs. Clarence (Cynthia) Elmore, Mrs. T.G. (Mary) Weatherman all of North Wilkesboro, Barbara Key and Mrs. Bill (Doris) Tharpe both of Winston-Salem. A Memorial Service will be held at Midway Baptist Church in West Jefferson Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Keith Casey of Midway Baptist Church and Rev. Sherree Jones of Konnoak Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Midway Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 1670 Mt. Jefferson Road, West Jefferson, N.C. 28694. Interment of ashes will be done in a family service at Midway Baptist Church Cemetery at a later date. EVANSVILLE, INDIANA -- Anna Stiles Brown, 84, of Evansville, died October 10, 1999 at 6:00 p.m. at Holiday Health Care. She was born April 24, 1915. Mrs. Brown was a member of First United Methodist Church in Henderson, Ky. She had retired as a Special Education Teacher in North Carolina. Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Harold Brown of Evansville; a daughter and son-in-law, Jo Lloyd Logan and Dr. Thomas B. Logan of Henderson, Ky; two sons, Jack H. Brown of Atlanta, Ga. and Bradley H. Brown and wife, Jackie of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Louise S. Hiatt of Sarasota, Fla. and Lois S. Sparks of Murray, Ky.; grandchildren, Dr. Thomas C. Logan of Owensboro, Ky, Dr. Mark B. Logan of Newburgh, Ind., Scott B. Logan of New Orleans, La., Angela B. Nosser of Tallahassee, Fla., Garrett M. Brown of Atlanta, Ga., W. Clinton Venable, and Jessie L. Venable both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and great-grandchildren, Taylor B. Logan and Thomas Brooks Logan II both of Newburgh, Ind., Matthew T. Logan and Michael S. Logan both of Owensboro, Ky., and Richard K. Sherman of Winston-Salem, N.C. SOUTH DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA -- Mr. Paul T. Carter, 71, died at Halifax Medical Center on October 10, 1999. He was born in Walkertown, N.C. on August 23, 1928 to Sam N. Carter and Gertrude Carter. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and a retired heavy equipment operator. He had been a resident of Florida since 1960. He is survived by his wife, Jean M. Carter of South Daytona Beach, Florida; a daughter, Norma Jean Harris (Billy); a brother, H. Samuel Carter (Jane) both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sons, Dennis and Steve Culler of Ormand Beach, Fla; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Burial will be Tuesday at Bellevue Cedar Hill Memory Gardens in South Daytona Beach, Fla.

Mrs. Flossie Frances Raines Cohn, 92, of 1900 West First Street in Winston-Salem departed this life for eternal rest on Friday, October 8, 1999 at the Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. She was born to the late Charlie and Dora Raines of June 25, 1907 in Apex, North Carolina. After spending many years in Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. Cohn returned to Winston-Salem in the late 1950's. She was a faithful member of Zion Hill Baptist Church. Our beloved was preceded in death by a son, Marion C. Ervin, Jr. on August 26, 1999. Surviving relatives are two grandchildren, Ms. Phyllis Jones of Southfield, Michigan and Mrs. Sonja Dunson and spouse, Orlando of Baltimore, Maryland; one great-granddaughter, Ms. Brianna Jones of Southfield, Michigan; one brother, Clevell Raines and spouse, Lillie Mae of Winston-Salem; one devoted niece, Mrs. Jacqueline Dunlap and spouse, Norman of Winston-Salem; great-nieces, Ms. Alicia Dunlap of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Lillian Richardson and spouse, Pete of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; great-nephews, Joseph Raines III and spouse, Marilyn of Charlotte; a great-great niece, Ms. Erica Raines of Winston-Salem; caring friends, Ms. Mattie Spencer Hill of Winston-Salem and Ms. Clara Wyatt of Detroit, Michigan; and other relatives and dear friends. CROCKETT
Mrs. Laura Felton Crockett was born in Hertford, N.C. to the late Joseph and Hattie Sharpe Felton. She was a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her life where she attended the Slater Normal School and was a retiree of Spirella Corporation. Mrs. Crockett was a member of United Metropolitan Baptist Church where she fomerly served on the Senior choir, Deaconess board, and missionary circle. She was also a former Sunday school Assistant Superintendent. In the community, Mrs. Crockett was a former member of the Ever Blooming Art Club. She departed this life on Thursday evening, October 7, 1999 in the Daniel Freeman Hospital, Los Angeles, Calif. following a period of illness. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at 11 a.m. from the First Baptist Church with Dr. J.D. Ballard officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service hour (10 a.m.-11 a.m.) Wednesday morning at the church. Surviving are two daughters, Vera (Alfred) Mitchell of Washington, D.C. and Ruth (Bennie) Walls of Suitland, Md.; one son, Jimmy (Hazel) Crockett of Los Angeles, Calif; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two nieces including a devoted niece, Austina Blackmon of Winston-Salem and Betty Witherspoon of Buffalo, N.Y.; and several other relatives and friends. BLADENBORO, N.C. -- Elzabeth Capel Dunn, 85, of Bladenboro, N.C., died Saturday, October 9, 1999 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Lumberton. A funeral service was held Monday, October 11, 1999 at First Baptist Church. Dr. Russell Cherry, Dr. Lloyd Jackson, and Rev. Robert Caldwell officiated. Burial was in Pinecrest Cemetery. Surviving are one sister-in-law, Ruby Dunn of Bladenboro and four nieces, Jayne Brown of Winston-Salem, Patricia Messick of Winston-Salem, Barbara Jackson of Richmond, Va., and Sayde Doxie of Washington, D.C.

KERNERSVILLE -- Daniel Lee ''Dan'' Eldreth, 35, of 8819 El Matador Drive, Kernersville, N.C., died Sunday, October 10, 1999 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. as a result of a massive stroke. He was born at Fort Hood, Texas on August 22, 1964. Dan was a graduate of Beaver Creek High School and Appalachian State University. Dan is survived by his parents, Lee and Mannon Eldreth, of 965 Helen Blevins Road, West Jefferson, N.C. and a sister, Ellen Marie Verhaagen; her husband, Dave and two children, Christy and Abbey, 2751 Briar Ridge Drive, Charlotte, N.C. A memorial services to celebrate Dan's life will be held Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Jefferson Presbyterian Church in West Jefferson, N.C. The family requests no flowers. Mrs. Evelyn Riggan Jones, 86, of Winston-Salem, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, died Monday, October 11, 1999 at Silas Creek Manor. Mrs. Jones was born February 25, 1913 in Wake County to Joseph Benton Riggan and Addie Braswell Riggan. She retired from Western Electric and was a member of First Assembly of God. Surviving are one daughter, Kay Belford, three granddaughters, Mary B. Wilson, Tina A. Byers, and Kim Byers; two great-grandsons, Timothy James Bennett and Jeremy Taylor Hauser all of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Brian Rainbow officiating. A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at Raleigh City Cemetery in Raleigh. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. James Roosevelt Kimber, passed away on Sunday, October 10, 1999. He is survived by his wife of more than 30 years, Mr. Cellan Bennett Kimber of the home; three daughters, Annette Henderson, Melody C. Neville, and Phyllis Campbell all of Winston-Salem. He was also the step-father of seven children, John R. Campbell of Washington, D.C., George T. (Ophelia) Campbell of High Point, N.C., Jacqueline R. Campbell of Winston-Salem, N.C. Reginald L. (Katie) Campbell of Louisville, Ky., James D. (Sabrina) Campbell, Dianne E. Campbell and Audrey D. Campbell all of Winston-Salem. His grandmother whom he cherished, Mrs. Lucy Joel of E. Orange, New Jersey. A funeral will be held at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home 2 p.m Wednesday with Brother Jimmy Cason officiating. Mrs. Judy Christine Tilley Lawson, 44, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, October 10, 1999 at the home of her daughter in Walkertown. Judy was born of February 14, 1955 in Forsyth County the daughter of Hassell and Edwina Cline Tilley. She was an employee of Excalibur Enterprises, Inc. as long as her health would permit. She is survived by one daughter, Shanell Lawson of Walkertown; two sons, Marty Lawson and Randy Lawson both of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Shyanne and Nisa Lawson of Walkertown; her mother, Edwina C.T. Garcia of Mount Airy; three sisters; and two brothers. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Chapel with Reverend John E. Sealey officiating.
