Dora Jane Carden
Dora Jane Carden, 75, of Kernersville, died August 31 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born November 20, 1926, in Durham County, a daughter of the late Archie and Lelia Skeen Mangum.
She was a member of Union Cross Moravian Church, Ladies Circle #3 and the Pfohl Adult Sunday School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roby Lee Mangum.
Surviving are her husband, Steve Carden of the home; two sons, Kenneth W. Carden and wife Joyce of Lewisville, and Steven Glenn Carden and wife Pat of Winston-Salem; a sister, Bettie Jenkins Garrett and husband Donald of Durham; two brothers, A.C. Mangum and wife Betty of Tequesta, Fla., and Marvin Mangum and wife Reba of Walnut Cove; and two grandchildren, Kevin Carden and Jason Carden.
Funeral services were held at Union Cross Moravian Church, with Dr. Jim Doss officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.
Robert Marshall Jones, Jr.
Robert Marshall Jones, Jr., 74, of Clemmons, died November 19 [2002] at his home.
He was born March 18, 1928 to Robert Marshall Jones, Sr. and Blanche Grimes Jones.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict.
He was retired from Bell South with 40 years of service and perfect attendance, and he was also an avid outdoorsman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Christy L. Allen.
Surviving are his his wife of 54 years, Pauline Roberts Jones of the home; a daughter, Marsha Rodman and husband Ronald of Clemmons; a brother, William B. Jones and wife Ruby of Winston-Salem; a sister, Betty J. Byrd and husband Pete of Maudlin, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park, with Chaplain Randy Hillman officiating.
Cecil Alexander Turner, Jr.
Cecil Alexander Turner, Jr., 60, of Lewisville, died November 19 [2002] at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill.
He was born March 13, 1942 in Chester County, S.C., to Cecil Alexander Turner and Dorothy Ernandez Turner.
He was a member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church and served in the U.S. Navy.
He had retired from Piedmont Aviation Credit Union and was a former member of the James B. Green Masonic Lodge No. 735 in Raleigh.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Jordan Turner of the home; a son, Lex Turner and wife Robyn of Greenville; a brother, Robert Turner of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Caroline and Alex Turner.
Funeral services were held at Shallowford Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Lucy Turner officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Clara Massey Burgess
Clara Massey Burgess, 71, of Winston-Salem, died November 19 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was the daughter of the late David and Esther Massey, and the wife of the late Marion (Sonny) Burgess.
She was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, where she served as a member of the Senior Missionary Society and the Ladies Working Society.
She was a retired employee of the Old Lexington Road Plant of A.T. & T., Inc.
Surviving are three aunts, Hazel P. Bailey of Winston-Salem, Mattie Bell Dudley of Washington, D.C., and Evangelist Ruth P. Calhoun of Atlanta, Ga.; several devoted cousins, Doris Smith and Betty Ijames, both of Clemmons, Pat Harris of Philadelphia, Pa., Willie L. (Junior) Bailey and Garland S. Brice, both of Winston-Salem, Roslyn B. Allen of Cary, and Nellie (Bummie) Moses and Matthew Moses, both of Atlanta, Ga.; special friends Doreatha Owens, Romaine Hollis, Frances Whigfall, Kay Montgomery and Clarence and Josephine Anderson, all of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A graveside service was held at Evergreen Cemetery, with Rev. Lewis R. Crawford officiating.
Harold Dean Campbell
Harold Dean Campbell, 76, of Pfafftown, died suddenly November 22 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
Born on December 15, 1925 in Indiana, he was employed 31 years with Indiana Bell and 10 years with A.T. & T. on Reynolda Road, as a technical writer.
He was a supervisor in New Castle, Ind., before moving to North Carolina.
A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Campbell, and two nephews.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Ruth Reed Campbell; two sons, Kenneth D. Campbell of Naperville, Ill., and Mark L. Campbell and wife Dianne of Pfafftown; two grandchildren, Alison Campbell and Benjamin Campbell; two sisters, Carol Bisel of San Diego, Ca., and Sarah Hayden of Muncie, Ind.; two brothers, Carl Campbell of Eaton, Ill., and Billy Campbell of Glendale, Ariz.; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in the Mausoleum Chapel of Forsyth Memorial Park, with Rev. Eugene Dean, pastor of Brookstown United Methodist Church, officiating.
Frank Raymond Smith, III
Frank Raymond Smith, III, 57, of Clemmons, died November 21 [2002] at his home.
He was born October 15, 1945 in Wilmington, to Frank Raymond Smith, Jr. and Helen Mae Barrier Smith.
He was the owner of Carolina Marble and Tile and was on the board of directors of the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association.
He was a member of Clemmons Presbyterian Church and the Rotary Club of Clemmons.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Sutphin Smith of the home; two sons, Mark L. Smith of Advance, and Matt M. Smith of the home; two brothers, Jimmy Smith of Raleigh, and Dick Smith of Woolwine, Va.; and a sister, Kathy Smith of Winston-Salem.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, with Dr. William Hoyle officiating.
Rebecca Turner Williams
Rebecca Turner Williams, 86, of Lewisville, died November 23 [2002] at her home.
She was born June 14, 1916 in Mobile, Ala., to Herbert Clarke Turner and Nina Agness Harris Turner.
She worked in the bond department at First National Bank of Mobile, until she met her future husband, Lanier Williams, and they were married in 1946.
In 1960, they mved to Short Hills, N.J., and in 1970, they moved to Forsyth County, joining the Williams family in Lewisville.
She was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church for many years.
She was a life-master judge of flowers and studied landscape architecture at the University of Georgia.
She was also the co-editor of the Williams family book of genealogy entitled "300 Years of Leadership of America".
Surviving are husband, Lanier Williams of the home; and a son, Clarke Williams of Lewisville.
A private graveside service was held at the family graveyard, Panther Creek, in Lewisville, with Rev. Perry Mobley officiating.
Judy M. Holder
Judy M. Holder, 56, of Lewisville, died November 23 [2002] at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
She was born December 15, 1945 in Davidson County, to Clyde and Mildred Hicks Michael.
She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 27 years of service and was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Raymond S. Holder of the home; a son, Richard Thomas Holder and wife Carla of East Bend; a stepson, Larry Ray Holder of Lewisville; four sisters, Josephine Sink, Linda Woosley and husband Randy, Bonnie Mercier and husband Ed, all of Clemmons, and JoAnn Spere and husband Bob of Huntington Beach, Ca.; a brother-in-law, Walter Holder, Jr. and wife Florence of Ohio; and a special friend, Phoebe Smith and husband Gray of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Union Hill Baptist Church, with Rev. Freddie Moretz officiating, and burial followed in Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Terry Lynn Hutchens
Terry Lynn Hutchens, 52, of Kernersville, died at his home [Nov 19, 2002] in Columbus, Ohio.
He was born in Forsyth County, a son of C.L. and the late Virginia Walton Hutchens, and was a member of Union Cross Baptist Church.
He was the owner of Amtext Book Co. in Columbus.
Surviving are his father and stepmother, C.L. and Ann B. Hutchens of Lewisville; two sisters, Jan Renee Richardson of Columbus, S.C., and Linda Mason of Charlotte; and two special nephews, Jamie Richardson and Ryan Mason.
A memorial service was held at Union Cross Baptist Church, with Dr. Chuck Towery officiating.
Hal C. Mathis
Hal C. Mathis, 88, of Pfafftown, died November 24 [2002] at Vienna Village, where he had lived for the past 18 months.
He was born in Wilkes County, the son of Davis C. and Jurella Lunford Mathis.
He spent most of his younger years in Rural Hall, and was a member of Rural Hall Baptist Church.
He had attended Old Town Baptist Church for the last 20 years and was active there until his health prevented him from attending.
He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army while being stationed in Alaska.
He married Dorothy Kreeger in 1940 and moved to the Old Richmond Community.
He worked at Swift and Co., where he retired in 1973 to care for his ill wife.
She passed away in October of 1974.
He then married Beulah Smith Whicker on November 12, 1978, and they traveled all over the U.S. as long as their health permitted.
Surviving are two step-daughters, Bettie W. Shaw of East Bend, and Barbara W. Ferguson and husband Larry of King; five grandchildren, Rev. Neill Shaw and wife Selwyn of Salisbury, Robin A. Shaw of Winston-Salem, Brian Pate of Wilmington, Kevin Pate of King, and Ashley P. Lunsford of Pfafftown; two great-grandchildren, Bethany and Benjamin Shaw of Salisbury; two brothers, Fleet Mathis of Elkin, and Joe Mathis of San Francisco, Ca.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Mathis and husband Troy of Alexandria, Va., and Maxine Mathis and husband Rex of Winston-Salem; and many nieces, nephews, and special neighbors.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall, with Dr. Rick Speas and Rev. Neill Shaw officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
