LILLARD
LEXINGTON -- Clarence ''Sarge'' Farris Lillard, 72, of 574 Mt. Olivet Church Road, Lexington, died at 1:37 a.m., Monday, October 11, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at Arcadia United Methodist Church where he was a member conducted by Rev. Alton Fitzgerald and Brother Gary K. Lillard. Burial will be in Arcadia United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by Arcadia VFW Post 10485. Mr. Lillard was born in Lower Marion County, Pa. on November 12, 1926 to Sherman Lillard and Dora Crowe Lillard. He grew up in Cherokee, N.C. and retired as a TSGT from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service. He moved to Arcadia in 1968 and worked with Gravely Tractor Company, retiring in 1989. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iona Essick Lillard who died on October 7, 1991; three brothers, Sherman Lillard, Charles Lillard, and William Robinson; and a sister, Laurabelle Wardell. He was a member and chaplain of the Arcadia VFW Post 10485 and also a member of the District H. Memorial Honor Guard. Surviving are two sons, Gary K. Lillard and wife, Frankie of Germany and Steve Lillard and Karen Carter of Pfafftown; two daughters Patricia L. Coone and husband, Dennis of Lexington and Pamela Lillard of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Angela, Keith, Brianne, Katie, Andrew, Nicholas, Miles, and Donovan; three brothers, Allen Lillard, Robert Lillard, and Samuel Robinson all of Sylva, N.C.; and three sisters, Alice DeHart, Elizabeth Potts, and Rowena Tolley all of Sylva, N.C. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home of his daughter, Patricia Coone on Mt. Olivet Church Road. MARTIN
READING, PA. -- Mrs. E. Rebecca Banner Martin, 81, formerly of 430 A Minor Street, Reading, Pa., died on Friday morning, October 8, 1999 in St. Joseph Medical Center, where she had been a patient for six days. She was taken there from Beverly Manor, Exeter Township, where she had resided for two years. Born in Red Bank, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Ellis and Hadie (Petree) Banner. Mrs. Martin was employed 19 years as a machine threader by Garden State Tannery, Fleetwood, retiring in 1964. She was a member of North Eighth Street Church of God, Reading, Pa. Her husband, Earl Martin, died January 25, 1998. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Mary Martin. Surviving is a daughter, Mildred R. (Martin) Robertson of Reading, Pa.; a brother, Elmer Banner of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 12:00 noon from Mount Zion Church of God in Christ, Reading, Pa. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton. MCKNIGHT
Mrs. Marie ''Pete'' Poindexter McKnight, 73, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, October 11, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 27, 1926 in Forsyth County to the late Sandy Levi and Mittie Viola Wood Poindexter. Mrs. McKnight was retired from AT&T and was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, James Lawrence McKnight of the home; a son, James Michael McKnight and wife, Barbara of Knoxville, Tenn; two grandchildren, Robin Bauer and husband, Fred and Randy McKnight; three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Alex, and Matthew; a sister, Mrs. Willie Sneed and husband, Ralph of Clemmons; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Rev. Joe McWethy. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Mrs. Minnie Lee Hutchens Pritchard, 98, of Homestead Hills Assisted Living, died Saturday, October 9, 1999. She was born May 25, 1901 in Yadkin County to John Ellis and Carrie Williams Hutchens. She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1924 and a member of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. Mrs. Pritchard was preceded in death by her husband, Joe W. Pritchard on June 29, 1966. He was President of Pritchard Electric Co. Inc. Surviving is one son, Charlie Gray (Bettie) Pritchard of Winston-Salem; one daughter, Betty (G.R. ''Jack'') Gordon of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Lee Gordon of Washington D.C. and Cindy Pritchard (Tony) Martin of Tobaccoville; and a sister-in-law, Helen Hutchens of Mount Airy. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Voglers, Main Street. Graveside services will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. by Dr. David Hughes. SMITH
STATE ROAD -- Mr. John Myrl Smith, 75, of Noah Hayes Road, State Road, died Monday, October 11, 1999 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Smith was born August 4, 1924 to the late Joseph Arl and Florence Burcham Smith. Mr. Smith was retired from Alltel Corporation and managed Surry Telephone for many years. He was a member of Mtn. Park Baptist Church and a member of Copeland Masonic Lodge. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II. He served in the 75th Infantry Battle of the Bulge in the European Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star. Survivors include his wife, Helen Lyon Smith of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve (Vicky) Smith of Jonesville and Donnie Smith of State Road; one daughter and son-in-law, Jan (Greg) Smith Fletcher of N. Wilkesboro; two brothers, Joe Smith and David Smith both of Elkin; three sisters, Margaret Dimmette of Ronda, Arlene Johnson of Pinnacle, and Judy Wiles of Elkin; six grandchildren, Mark Smith, Trent Smith, Brock Smith, Abbye Fletcher, Jesse Fletcher, and Sara Beth Fletcher; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Mtn. Park Baptist Church by Rev. Tim Mason. The body will lie instate thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Mtn. SMITH
NEW PORT, N.C. -- Mrs. Marie Baldwin Smith, formerly of the Oldtown area of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, October 10, 1999 at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. She was the widow of Eddie B. Smith who preceded her in death in 1993. Mrs. Smith was born on May 7, 1928 in Alleghany, County the daughter of the late Lennie and LouDema McMeans Baldwin. She was of the Baptist Faith and had worked for Hanes Knitting Co. in Winston-Salem. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Judy Smith Burchett of New Port, N.C.; three grandchildren, Angela Bradshaw of Winston-Salem, Harold Murphy, Jr. of Clemmons, and Ernie Lunsford, Jr. of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, Dustin Wade Murphy of Clemmons and Michael Todd Bradshaw, Jr. of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Marie Smith Murphy in 1991. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall by Rev. Dane Burchett. The Smith family will receive friends one hour before the service (1:00 to 1:45) at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel.
SPARKS
Margaret Virginia Hanes Sparks, 88, died peacefully and with dignity on Monday, October 11, 199 at the Fitzgerald Center of Arbor Acres. She is survived by her loving husband, C. Virgil Sparks. She was born October 8, 1911 in Winston-Salem to Effie Louella Vanhoy Hanes and Robah Eugene Hanes. Survivng are her brother, David Hanes and two sisters and their husbands, Sudie and Robert Clayton and Jacque and Glenn Joyce. Also surviving are her brother-in-law, Ray Foster Sparks and wife, Dot. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Robert Sparrow. Many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, great-grand-nephews, and great-grand-nieces survive their beloved Aunt Margaret. Mrs. Sparks was a 1929 graduate of Richard J. Reynolds High School, a member of Burkhead United Methodist Church, and Konnoak Hills United Methodist Church. She was also a life time member of the United Methodist Women. Her outstanding accomplishment and gift to many is that she was a devoted Sunday School teacher from age 16 to age 85. She made a difference in the lives of many young people and enriched our community. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. in Woodland Cemetery conducted by Rev. James McKinney. Mr. Herbert Benjamin Stephens, 70, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, October 10, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 4, 1929 in Morganton, N.C. to the late Walter Caswell and Nisha Ross Stephens. Mr. Stephens served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Industries and was a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Winston-Salem Craft's Guild. Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Wallace Stephens in January 1999. Surviving are two daughters, Cindy Letchworth and husband, Keith of Winterville, N.C. and Laurie Kudlinski and husband, Tim of Henderson, N.C.; a son, Jeffrey Stephens of Atlanta, Ga.; two granddaughters, Kelly and Jenny Letchworth; a sister, Mr. Mary Lou Black of Morganton. A Memorial Service will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Ardmore United Methodist Church by Rev. Lisa L. Wishon. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. A Committal Service will then follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Nelson Stewart, 77 of Hwy. 64 East, Mocksville, died Monday, October 11, 1999 at Davie County Hospital. The body will remain at Eaton Funeral Service, pending completion of funeral arrangements.

KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Betty Nelson Vanhoy, 67, of 7067 Vance Rd., died Monday, October 11, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Vanhoy was born in Rockingham Co. Sept. 26, 1932 to the late Early Vie and Elsie Smith Nelson and was a retiree of Sara Lee with 47 years of service. She was a member of the Gospel Light Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Rowe. She was a loving wife, mother, and Granny. Surviving are her husband, Curtis Vanhoy of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jerry and Christene Burgess of Kernersville and Max and Vickie Ballard of Newton; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Sharon Vanhoy of Kernersville; three sisters, Barbara Cheek of Winston-Salem, June Kohn of Rural Hall, and Vonnie Kiger of Surf City; a brother, Jack Nelson of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren and their spouses, Dawn And Clifton Holloway of Kernersville, Wendy and Chris Bradford of Newton, Tina and Kenneth Johnson of Charlotte, Tiffany Burgess, Shannon Vanhoy, and Travis Burgess all of Kernersville; and four great-grandchildren, Jessica Holloway and Casey Holloway of Kernersville, Mason Bradford of Newton, and Luke Johnson of Charlotte. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel by Rev. Bobby Roberson with burial to follow in the Gardens of Memory.
