Julian Carl Meeks
Julian Carl Meeks, 99, of Winston-Salem, died January 31 [2003] at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born October 23, 1903, in Rockingham County, to Jessie and Sallie Tullock Meeks.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie McDaniel; and two brothers, Crawford and Claude Meeks.
Surviving are a son, Bill M. Summey and wife Vicki of Lewisville.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, with Dr. Harold Fletcher officiating.
Woodrow Roy Eidson
Woodrow Roy Eidson, 89, died January 27 [2003] at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons.
He was born March 4, 1913, in Iredell County, to John V. and Hester Ladd Eidson.
He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Opal Parnell Eidson, in December of last year and a brother, Clyde T. Eidson.
Surviving are a son, Roy W. Eidson and wife Bobbie; a granddaughter, Kim Dawn Eidson; a brother, John V. Eidson and wife Lillian; and a sister-in-law, Agnes Eidson of New Orleans.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with James Percival officiating.
Lois Reavis Tutterow
Lois Reavis Tutterow, 77, of Mocksville, died January 19 [2003] at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Born in Davie County, on March 28, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William Lee “Bean” and Irma Betts Reavis.
She was a homemaker, a member of Center United Methodist Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Cooleemee.
Her husband, Jeff Tutterow, preceded her in death in 1987.
Surviving are a son, Lloyd Tutterow and wife Joyce of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a daughter, Lori Setzer and husband John of Lewisville; a grandson, Cody; and two brothers, Clifford Reavis and wife Ruth Ann of Winston-Salem, and Curtis Lee Reavis of Mocksville.
Funeral services were held at Davie Funeral Service Chapel, with Rev. Scott Lyerly officiating, and burial followed at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Lois Tedder Wooters
Lois Tedder Wooters, 75, of Clemmons, died January 29 [2003] at her home.
She was born October 12, 1927, in Stokes County, to William Ralph and Pauline Johnson Tedder.
She was a charter member of Unity Moravian Church.
Her husband, H.C. “Hank” Wooters, preceded her in death.
Surviving are three daughters, Cindi Barber of Clemmons, Meena Evans of Advance, and Lisa Levens of Clemmons; a son, Mark Wooters of Winston-Salem; a sister, Brenda Parrish of Clemmons; four brothers, Richard Tedder of Welcome, Harrelle Tedder of Clemmons, Gayle Tedder of Kernersville, and Barry Tedder of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, J. Mitch Sweat, Neil Wagstaff, Carl Wagstaff, Eric Levens and Lindy Levens; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Williams and Madison Sweat; and a lifelong friend, Betty Warner of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Unity Moravian Church, with Rev. William McElveen officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.
Kathleen Shore Yates
Kathleen Shore Yates, 88, of Lewisville, died January 27 [2003].
She was born January 20, 1915, in Forsyth County, to Jasper Levi and Ella Huffman Shore.
She was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church in Lewisville.
She was retired from Western Electric (AT&T).
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Yates; a grandson, Martin Craver; and a son-in-law, Norman Craver.
Surviving are two daughters, Ruby Craver of Clemmons, and Connie Bodsford and husband W.G. of Denver, N.C.; four grandchildren, Keith Bodsford and wife Jane, Dana Cummings and husband Jeff, Steve Craver and Jill Craver; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Shiloh Lutheran Church, with Rev. James White officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Wilma Roberta Bowles
Wilma Roberta Bowles, 71, of Clemmons, formerly of Jacksonville, Fla., died January 26 [2003] at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born January 31, 1931, in Davie County, to Amos Lee and Jessie Lee Johnston Bowles, and was a lifelong employee of Seaboard Coastline Railroad.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin L. Bowles and John C. Bowles, Sr.
Surviving are three sisters, Alice B. Dolman, Vera B. Scobey and husband Ed of Clemmons, and Elnora B. Luper of Mocksville; and a brother, Worth M. Bowles and wife Dottie of Olympia, Wash.
A memorial service was held at Jericho Church of Christ, with Tom Torpy and Harding Lowry officiating.
Inurnment followed in the church cemetery.
Gena Howell Hix Elias
Gena Howell Hix Elias, 78, of Winston-Salem, died January 31 [2003] at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Born on July 1, 1924, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Hix and Cassandra (Carrie) Thomas Hix of Moravian Falls.
She married her husband, Lewis Weimar Elias, Jr., in 1942 at College Station, Texas.
In 1956, they moved their family to Winston-Salem.
In 1967, she became one of the first teacher aides employed by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system.
She worked at both Parkland and North Forsyth senior high schools, as well as private schools, including Forsyth Country Day School and Emmanuel Christian School.
In 1975, she became a guide at Historic Bethabara Park, where she thoroughly enjoyed telling visitors “The Story of the Moravians” for over 22 years.
Beginning in 1995, she taught classes for several years on the history of Winston-Salem, and Forsyth County, and the art of calligraphy for the Forsyth Technical Community College Continuing Education department.
She was a member of the Old North State chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Rockford Preservation Society and a lifetime member of the Bethania Historical Society.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, for over 40 years and a member of St. Catherine’s Circle.
For several years, she hand-inscribed church records and information in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Memory Book.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Lewis Weimar Elias, Jr. of the home; a son, Lewis Weimar Elias, III and wife Renee Elias of Clemmons; three daughters, Elizabeth Tim Elias Gish and husband Dr. Larry Morgan Gish of Salisbury, Cassandra Hix Elias Callison and husband Michael Callison of Winston-Salem, and Frances Carter Elias Binder and husband Dr. Steve Binder of Cornelius; a brother, William Thomas Hix and wife Martha Blackwelder Hix of Winston-Salem; a sister, Lana Jon Hix Reavis and husband James Clinton Reavis of Morganton; five grandchildren, Teresa Anne Gish Perry and husband Charles Kent Perry of San Carlos, Calif., Ellen Elizabeth Gish Dutton and husband David Glenn Dutton of Pleasant Hill, Calif., James Brian Hawley of Greenville, Liane Elizabeth Elias of Winston-Salem, and Adam Carter Elias of Pilot Mountain; four great-grandchildren, Madeline Elise Perry and Benjamin Morgan Perry of San Carlos, Calif., and Emily Grace Dutton and Elizabeth Morgan Dutton of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; and a niece, Martha Jon Hix Siceloff and husband Dr. T. Eric Siceloff of Winston-Salem.
A private interment in Dalton Memorial Gardens was followed by a memorial service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with Rev. Grayce M. O’Neill and Rev. Donald P. Goodheart officiating.
Estelle Anderson Smith
Estelle Anderson Smith, 80, of Clemmons, died February 27 [2003] at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born July 28, 1921, in Surry County, to Crawley P. and Carrie Ayers Anderson.
She was an active member of Clemmons First Baptist Church and retired from R. J. Reynolds after 38 years of service.
She was an avid garden enthusiast and a basket weaver.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathrine Bailey; and two brothers, Johnnie Anderson and Charlie Henry Anderson.
Surviving are her husband of 61 years, William H. Smith; a son, Tony Smith and wife Joann of Raleigh; two daughters, Debbie Baity and husband I.H. of Mocksville, and Becky Hoyos of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Sabrina Davis, Barrett Smith and Milo Hoyos; a great-grandson, Logan; and two brothers, Grover Anderson and Grady Anderson.
A funeral service was held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, with Dr. Robert L. Phillips, Dr. Robert Cantwell and the Rev. Claxton Hall officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Edna Powell Barnhill
Edna Powell Barnhill, 78, of Winston-Salem, the wife of the late James D. Barnhill, died March 3 [2003] at her home.
She was born October 20, 1923, in Johnston County, to Adin Ashley and Mary Moore Powell.
She worked in Oak Ridge, Tenn., as a member of The Manhattan Project and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Ardmore United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her son, James A. Barnhill and wife Cheryl of Clemmons; her daughter, Carol B. Carr and husband Bob of Rose Hill; four grandchildren, Dana Barnhill, Lauren Barnhill, Elizabeth Carr and Ashley Carr; and her brother, Adin Ashley Powell, Jr.
Funeral services were held at Ardmore United Methodist Church, with Dr. Frank Grice officiating.
A graveside service was held at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Smithfield.
