Dorothea Pauline Hamlin Conrad

Doreatha Pauline Hamlin Conrad, 77, of Winston-Salem, died February 21 [2003] after a period of declining health.
She was born in Yadkin County, to the late Rush and Sarah Richmond Hamlin.
She was a member of Capernaum Church of Christ in Clemmons, for 58 years and was retired from the Children's Center for the physically handicapped. Preceding her in death was a daughter, Sarah Louise Conrad; a sister, Mildred Hawkins; a granddaughter, Parrish Conrad, and a grandson, Larry Conrad.
Surviving are her husband, John Alex Conrad; four sons, John Conrad, Jr., Samuel Conrad, Michael Conrad and wife Inell and William Conrad; three daughters, Barbara Miles and husband Walter, Roberta Blue and husband Lonnie, Jr., and Doris Fleming and husband Johnny; 34 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Warner's Chapel Church of Christ in Clemmons, and burial followed in the Capernaum Church of Christ Cemetery, Clemmons.

Clifton Edward Nicholson

Clifton Edward Nicholson, 84, of Lewisville, died March 4 [2003] at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
He was born October 8, 1917, in Forsyth County, to Gideon Gabriel and Rosetta Gordy Nicholson.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Mabel Bowers Nicholson of the home; three daughters, Rosa Lee Harper and husband Gary of Lexington, Ella Bee "Ellie" Smith and husband Bob of Lewisville, and Lois Allen and husband Tim of Yadkinville; six grandchildren, John Harper and wife Beverly of Lexington, Gina Cartrette of Yadkinville, Lisa Harper and fiancé Gray of Lewisville, Lori Simons and husband Mark of Lexington, Tenn., John Allen, Jr. and wife Mary Anne of Yadkinville, and Jason Allen of Raleigh; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Warner's Chapel Church of Christ, with Mark Simons, minister, and Denton Landon, minister, officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Reuben Hughes

Reuben Hughes, 76, of Winston-Salem, died March 2 [2003] at The Oaks at Forsyth.
He was born December 13, 1925, in Forsyth County, to James Reuben and Dora Hayes Hughes.
He was a World War II Navy veteran and a retired employee of AT&T.
He was a lifelong member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church, where he served as an elder and a trustee.
Surviving are his wife, Sue Binkley Hughes of the home; a daughter, Martha H. Zimmerman and husband Stuart of Winston-Salem; two sons, Rodney A. Hughes and wife Dianne of Clemmons, and John R. Hughes and wife Janie of Bethlehem, Pa.; a sister, Ruth Trogdon and husband Francis of Winston-Salem; a brother, The Right Rev. James C. Hughes and wife Rita of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Ashley and John Hughes of Clemmons, Erin and Garrett Zimmerman of Winston-Salem, Michael, Taylor, and Kyle Hughes of Bethlehem, Pa.
Funeral services were held at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, with Dr. Worth Green and Rev. Christopher C. Thore, and burial followed in the church graveyard.

Charles Edwin Clarke, Jr.

Charles "Charlie" Edwin Clarke, Jr., formerly of Lewisville, died May 8 [2002] at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, after a brief illness.
He was born April 29, 1920, in Kenly, to the late Fedora Haxall and the Rev. Charles Clarke.
In his early years, being in a Presbyterian minister's family, he lived several places and was known as "Ed."
He served in the Army Air Force in transportation stateside and in the Philippines, and held the rank of lieutenant.
He was a civil engineer in road construction with state, city and private employment.
He was most notable at L.A. Reynolds Co. in Winston-Salem, and retired from the city of Winston-Salem.
He held several leadership roles in Lewisville United Methodist Church and was an avid and competitive bridge player.
Although dedicated to his profession, he enjoyed fishing and RV camping.
After retirement from construction, he enjoyed developing a love of steam locomotives.
He was preceded in death by his son, Charles "Joe" E. Clarke, III, in 1965.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Juanita Stainback Clarke of the home; his daughter, Marsha Quinton and husband Billy of Angier; grandchildren Steve Quinton and Mindy Quinton of Raleigh; his brother, L.H. "Hax" Clarke and wife Nancy of Pine Level; and nephew and family, Bill and Susie Clarke (children Matthew, Elizabeth and Michael).
Funeral services were held at Lewisville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Don Routh officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

M. Diane Rousseau

M. Diane Rousseau, 65, of Clemmons, died May 6 [2002] at home from lung cancer.
She was born January 7, 1937, in Washington, D.C., to Timoxena and N. Archibald Rousseau of Wilkesboro.
She spent 20 years as a performing artist and actress in New York City, and 15 years in telecommunications locally.
She started a third career as a prize-winning sculptor and ceramicist. y
At the time of her death, she was studying at The Sawtooth Center for the Visual Arts in Winston-Salem.
Her performing career included on- and off-Broadway stage, film, radio and commercials.
She remains familiar to daytime drama audiences for her 12-year starring role on CBS in "Love of Life".
Surviving are a son, Christopher Jud Barbee; a grandson, Sage, of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Cynthia Rousseau of Wilkesboro.
A graveside service was held at Mount Lawn Cemetery in North Wilkesboro.

Ellen May Sidney

Ellen May Sidney, 84, of Winston-Salem, died May 8 [2002] at The Oaks at Forsyth.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Sidney.
Surviving are her children, Richard Sidney and wife Joann of New Jersey, Douglass Sidney and wife Brenda of Clemmons, and Carol Pillion and husband John of Florida; grandchildren, Deborah and Kathleen Sidney, Jennifer Evanski, Lisa May and Lori Pillion, all of New Jersey, and Kevin Sidney and Pamela Krpejs of Winston-Salem; and a great-grandson, Maximillien Krpejs of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held in New Jersey.

Gertrude Starbuck Berrier

Gertrude Starbuck Berrier, 84, of Winston-Salem, died May 11 [2002] at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons.
She was born August 28, 1917, in High Point, to Floyd and Bessie Starbuck.
In her earlier years, she worked at a hosiery mill in High Point, but will be remembered most as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She was a loyal and active member of Canaan United Methodist Church, as long as her health permitted and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, G.A. Berrier.
Surviving are two sons, Morris "Mo" Berrier and wife Judy of Midway, and Mitchell Berrier and wife Frances of Randleman; two daughters, Joan Roggenkamp and husband David of Winston-Salem, and Lou Anne Pardue of Advance; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ruby Leonard of Midway, Pearl Mason of High Point, and Willie Stutts and husband Marvin of High Point.
Funeral services were held at Canaan United Methodist Church, with Rev. Wade Childers officiating, followed by graveside services at the church cemetery.

Lewey Turner Motsinger

Lewey Turner Motsinger, 72, of Lewisville, died May 9 [2002] at his home.
He was born February 8, 1930, to Marvin Turner Motsinger and Lela Dull Motsinger in Forsyth County.
He was a member of Lewisville Baptist Church and was retired from Lucent Technology after 42 years' service.
He was a five-gallon blood donor and a member of the Telephone Pioneers.
He helped to develop the Beep-ball for blind children.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Jones Motsinger of the home; a daughter, Sherrie Motsinger Benson and husband Ron; a son, James Timothy Motsinger; two grandchildren, Kyle Turner and Luke Timothy Benson; and a niece, Andrea Jones of Charlotte.
Funeral services were held at Lewisville Baptist Church, with Rev. Jeff Priest and Rev. Ralph Stanley officiating.

Donald Gray Smith, Sr.

Donald Gray Smith, Sr., 65, of Advance, died May 7 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
Born December 27, 1936, in Forsyth County, he was the son of the late Alfred Douglas and Maude Billings Smith.
He was a truck driver and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are two sons, Donald G. Smith, Jr. of Advance, and Marty W. Smith of Fork; two daughters, Sherry L. Smith of Hamptonville, and Shelia K. Smith of Winston-Salem; five brothers, Johnny Smith of Clemmons, Bobby Smith of Pontiac, Mich., and Henry Smith, Edgar Smith and Larry Smith, all of Winston-Salem; five sisters, Faye Liddell, Sylvia Lindley, Susie Smith and Elsie Myers, all of Winston-Salem, and Betty Jackson of Clemmons; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A graveside service was held at Rose Cemetery, Mocksville, with Rev. Jimmy Lancaster officiating.

Clyde Joseph Tise

Clyde Joseph Tise, 79, of Lewisville, died January 14 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born September 15, 1922, in Forsyth County, to Paul E. and Lillie Mae Doty Tise.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Vulcan Materials Co.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Connie Davis Tise, of the home; a daughter, Rebecca Kyles and husband Jimmi of Pfafftown; three sons, Ricky Tise and wife Nancy of Pinnacle, Garry Tise and wife Nita of Booneville, and Jerry Tise and wife Helen of Colfax; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two foster sons, Steve March of Clemmons, and Bolt Fryar of the home; two sisters, Pauline Newman of California, and Elizabeth Renigar of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Paul E. Tise of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel, with Rev. John Winfrey officiating, and burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory, with military rites by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.
