Fay Hamby Colbert
Fay Hamby Colbert, 89, died at Britthaven of Kernersville, January 29 [2002].
She was born in Wilkes County, September 22, 1912, to Jasper and Dona Andrews Hamby.
She was a very active member of Robin Hood Road Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school.
She was retired from Western Electric Co., with 27 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William A. Colbert; a daughter, Gloria Jean Taylor; a step-daughter, Frances Goldsmith; three brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are two sons, William Gregory Colbert and wife Ann of Lewisville, and Miles E. Colbert and wife Elaine of Winston-Salem; two step-daughters, Juanita Lamay and husband Jack of Sterling, Va., and Delores Eberly and husband Dutch of Annapolis, Md.; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Doris Miles and husband Bruce of Ferguson, and Madeline Tesh of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Robin Hood Road Baptist Church, with Rev. Levy Goodrich and Rev. David Wooten officiating, and burial followed at Crestview Memorial Park.
Rosa Crews Rogers
Rosa Crews Rogers, 95, died February 2 [2002] at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons.
She was born October 3, 1906, in Forsyth County, to Henry and Ella Pegg Crews.
She was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church, and she and husband Alvin were owner and operator of Alvin G. Rogers Jewelry on Main Street, for a number of years.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Alvin G. Rogers; four sisters, Laura C. Watts, Lydia C. Thomas, Neva C. King, Minnie Crews; and three brothers, Roy Crews, Thomas Crews, O.L. "Tip" Crews.
Surviving are two special nieces, Peggy Gimmon of Winston-Salem, and Mary Butler of Kernersville, and a number of other nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Rev. Floyd Boles officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Gail Gough Jarvis
[Barbara] Gail Gough Jarvis, 63, of Winston-Salem, died January 29 [2002].
She was born to the late Jack and Dorothy Jeffries Gough, September 29, 1938, in Forsyth County.
She was a graduate of Mineral Springs High School.
She married William Roy Jarvis, December 9, 1972, in Winston-Salem.
She was a lifelong member of Marvin United Methodist Church.
She was a homemaker and a former banquet manager of the Ramada Inn in Clemmons.
She was a loving wife, mother and nana.
Along with her parents, a brother, Jack Alan Gough; and a grandson, Christopher Neill Collins, preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband, Bill Jarvis of the home; three daughters, Mandy Mitchell Dozier and husband Glenn of Pfafftown, Marcie Mitchell Regenthal and husband Alan of Lewisville, and Page Noble Collins and husband Eddie of King; eight grandchildren, Brian, Jill and Stephen Dozier, David and Lyndsey Regenthal and Sarah and Daniel Collins; and a special friend, Gail Cunningham.
Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Marvin United Methodist Church and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Samuel Lee Howard
Samuel Lee Howard, 85, of Clemmons, died December 31 [2001] at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born October 3, 1916, in Davie County.
He was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church and was retired from Hanes Hosiery Co.
He played baseball for the Hane's Hosiery baseball team.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bessent Howard; and his parents, Joseph Henry and Martha Allen Howard.
Surviving are two daughters, Eugenia Howard of Clemmons, and Bonnie Howard Faulk of Laurinburg; two granddaughters, Karla Leigh Faulk of Holly Springs and Amanda Brooks Faulk of Laurinburg; a brother, Johnny Howard of Mocksville; and two sisters, Edna Allen of Yadkinville, and Nina Barnes of Advance.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel, with Rev. Ray Burke officiating, and burial followed at Clemmons Moravian Church.
Daniel M. Bowers
Daniel M. Bowers, 69, of Lewisville, died December 31 [2001].
He was born May 4, 1932, in Forsyth County, to the late Orlinda M. and Amanda Doby Bowers.
He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 30 years of service and was a member of Huntsville Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Jane M. Bowers of the home; a daughter, Shelia Lawson and husband Michael of Huntsville; a son, Danny Bowers and wife Cindy of Midway; grandchildren Amanda Suzanne Jones, Miranda Bowers and Monica Bowers; sisters Mildred Pollard and husband James and Doris Anders and husband Leonard; and a brother, Moody Bowers and wife Virginia.
Funeral services were held at the Gentry Family Chapel, with Rev. Warren Kerr and Brother James Smith officiating, and burial followed in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamptonville.
Donald Clifton Johnson
Donald Clifton Johnson, 77, of Clemmons, died January 1 [2001].
He was born February 25, 1924, in Forsyth County, to Robert Lee and Mary Sheppard Johnson.
He was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church and retired from the Bahnson Co.
He also served in the U.S Army during World War II.
His parents; a daughter, Debra Johnson Martin; and a brother-in-law, John Collett, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Sink Johnson; two daughters, Peggy J. Anderson and husband Donald and Lisa J. Blake and husband Ron; a son-in-law, Charles M. Martin; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Johnson and wife Mary Sybil and David Johnson and wife Edith; and two sisters, Frances Ryan and husband R.C. and Margaret Collett.
A graveside service was held at Friedberg Moravian Church Graveyard with Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating.
Victoria Katherine Davis
Infant Victoria Katherine Davis of Lewisville, died December 31 [2001] at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
She was born December 9, 2001, in Mecklenburg County.
Surviving are her parents, Jamie and Kitty Davis of Lewisville; a brother, Trip; and grandparents Nancy and Benny Davis of King, and Gaye Brewer of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park, with Rev. Tim Gammons officiating.
Bessie Williams Sprinkle
Bessie Williams Sprinkle, 94, died January 6 [2002] at Cambridge Hills in Clemmons.
She was born in Yadkin County, on October 21, 1907, to Robert Ellis Williams and Flora Lee Choplin Williams.
She had worked at Hanes Hosiery and at Chatham Manufacturing many years ago and was a member of Woodland Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death were her husband, David Brandon Sprinkle, Sr. and a son, David Brandon Sprinkle, Jr.
Surviving are her son, John Wesley Sprinkle, Sr. and wife Clarine of King; four grandchildren, David Sprinkle, Denise Sprinkle, John W. Sprinkle, Jr., and Keith Bryan Sprinkle; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Turnie Davis of Yadkinville; and a special niece, Diana Fearrington and a special nephew, Tony Fearrington.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park, with Rev. Zeno Groce officiating.
Mildred Billings O’Brien
Mildred Billings O'Brien, 74, died January 1 [2002] at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
She was born September 28, 1927, in Yadkin County, to Hobart and Beulah Groce Billings.
She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Carl Lee and Gary Wayne Billings.
Surviving are her husband, Philip O'Brien of the residence; a daughter, Vickie Brophy and husband Jim of Winston-Salem; a son, Mike E. O'Brien and wife Vicki of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Sarah Brophy and Katie O'Brien of Wilmington, and David O'Brien of Raleigh; two sisters, Helen Boger and husband Lawrence and Carolyn Bennett and husband Wade of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Celia Billings of Gastonia; her stepmother, Lee Vonda Billings of The Oaks at Forsyth; and a stepbrother, Steve Billings of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Guy Hipp, Dr. C. Mark Corts and Dr. Gary Chapman officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Samuel Moore Gilbert
Samuel Moore Gilbert, 80, of Pfafftown, died January 2 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born July 18, 1921, in Forsyth County, to William Oscar and Maude Everidge Gilbert.
He served in the Army Air Corps stationed in Iceland, during World War II.
After returning from service, he worked for Sears Roebuck & Co. until establishing Gilbert and Martin Transfer Co. in 1948, which later became Gilbert Transfer Co.
He retired in 1988.
He served as a Scout leader for Boy Scout Troop 946 for more than 20 years.
Among the honors he received were Scouter's Key, Silver Beaver Award and induction into the Order of the Arrow.
He was a member of Doub's and Pleasant Hill United Methodist churches and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8593, Pfafftown chapter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Martin Gilbert; a son, Samuel Gilbert, Jr.; and a grandson, Nicholas B. Loris.
