MYERS

ELKIN -- Miss Della Jane Myers, 67, of 2569 Austin-Traphill Road, died Thursday afternoon at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, by the Rev. Joe Blackburn and Dr. Max Hill.
Miss Myers was born in Wilkes County, on Nov. 27, 1932, to John J. and Beulah Newman Myers.
She was a registered nurse, having graduated from Davis Hospital School of Nursing in 1954.
She was retired from Sara Lee Corp. and was a member of First Baptist Church in Jonesville.
Surviving are numerous cousins and two godchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any memorials be made to the Prayer Garden at First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Jonesville, NC 28642.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

OLIVE

Dr. A. Thomas Olive, 69, formerly of Lewisville, died Sept. 14, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
A graduate of Mars Hill College and Wake Forest University, he was awarded a Master's and Doctorate degrees in entomology from N.C. State University.
Dr. Olive taught at Wake Forest University for 28 years.
Survivors include Betty Olive of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Cecilie Olive Breese and husband Steve of Cary; a son, Dana Olive of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Becky and Jenny Breese of Cary; a sister-in-law, Frances Olive of Charlotte; a brother-in-law, John Turner, Jr. and wife Bonnie of Winston-Salem; and four nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Unity Moravian Church in Lewisville.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the church.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County; Unity Moravian Church; or Wake Forest University.
Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

OPDYKE

GREENSBORO -- Doris Nixon Opdyke, 82, of 1208 New Garden Road died Sept. 7, 2000, at her residence.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at the Sedgefield Presbyterian Church, 4216 Wayne Road, Greensboro, with a musical tribute beginning at 2:30.
Doris will be remembered for a life of faithfulness to her family, church and community.
Her husband, children and grandchildren were blessed to have her warm and caring ways that became a source of strength and encouragement.
She was an elder, a leader in the Presbyterian Women's Organization, worship commission and children's choir.
Doris was a faithful presence in church choirs for more than 60 years.
She gave many years of service to her community by serving as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and delivering meals for the United Services for Older Adults Mobile Meals Program.
To those who knew her, Doris truly fulfilled her call to be God's faithful servant wherever she was needed.
Survivors include her husband, William T. Opdyke; daughters Susan Opdyke of Newton, Mass., and Jane McMasters of San Diego; sons Richard Opdyke of Charlotte and Robert Opdyke of Greensboro; sister Beatrice Hand of Denville, N.J.; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Sedgefield Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 4216 Wayne Road, Greensboro, NC 27407, or to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Street Chapel is assisting the family.

REAVIS

YADKINVILLE -- Mazie Elizabeth Hayes Reavis, 73, passed away Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Davidson County, to the late Harvey and Lala Watson Hayes.
Mrs. Reavis was a homemaker and a member of South Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip W. Reavis, and a brother, Jesse Lee Hayes.
Surviving are her daughter, Mary Kathryn Reavis of Yadkin Nursing Center, Yadkinville; a sister, Kathleen (Nelson) Hutchens of Mocksville; and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Gentry Family Chapel, conducted by Dr. Phil Beavers.
Burial will follow in the South Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Gentry Family Funeral Services, Highway 601 North, Yadkinville.

SHELTON

MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. John Hugh Shelton, 75, of Howell Road, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Shelton was born Nov. 15, 1924, in Davie County, to the late John D. and Ila Mae Sprinkle Shelton.
He is survived by two daughters, Christine (Wayne) Dobbins and Janice Smith of Yadkinville; a sister, Cornelia (Batry) Smith of Mocksville; and a brother, Tommy Shelton of Danville, Va.
Also surviving are five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Earlene Sapp of Pfafftown.
Mr. Shelton was a member of Courtney Baptist Church, was a retired farmer and was retired from Advance Security as a guard at the Ingersol-Rand Co. in Mocksville.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.
His funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. in the Gentry Family Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Brown, the Rev. David Maynard and the Rev. Curtis Gibson.
Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in the Courtney Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be made to Courtney Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3341 Courtney Church Road, Yadkinville, NC 27055, or to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

SLOAN

Faye Mills Sloan, 90, died Thursday, October 7, 1999 in Springwood Care Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born in Alexander County, on February 2, 1909, to the late Thomas R. and Martha C. Price Mills.
She was a homemaker and volunteered at the former Alexander County Hospital.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Taylorsville.
She was also a member of the Taylorsville Garden Club and the Sewing Club.
In 1927, she married James M. Sloan, who preceded her in death in 1986.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Henkle Mills and an infant son, Thomas Fulton Sloan.
Survivors include three daughters, Doris S. Icenhour and husband, Asa of Winston-Salem, Joan S. Blankenship and husband, Mack of Greensboro, and Shirley S. Allen and husband, Don of Tobaccoville; one sister, Mrs. Willie Finncannon; eleven grandchildren, Debbie Tucker, Sandy Shelton, Kim Reich, Jamie Isenhour, Jan Isenhour, Mack B. Blankenship, III, Mark Blankenship, Malinda Lentz, Paige Russell, Angie May and Beth Davis; and eleven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 9, 1999, from noon until 12:30 p.m., at Alexander Funeral Service.
A graveside service will follow in the Taylorsville City Cemetery, at 1:00 p.m. and will be conducted by Dr. Charles Hutchens.
Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 157, Taylorsville, N.C. 28681, or to Hospice of Alexander County, 50 Lucy Echerd Lane, Taylorsville, N.C. 28681.

STUDEVENT

MOCKSVILLE -- Clyde Roosevelt Studevent, 85, of Campbell Road, Mocksville, passed on Thursday morning [October 7, 1999] at the Forsyth Memorial Hospital, after an illness of two weeks.
Mr. Studevent was born on September 5, 1914 in Davie County, N.C., to the late William "Asbury" Studevent and Angeline Gaither Studevent.
He was educated in the Davie County School System.
Of the many goals Mr. Studevent had, he was a Star Route Mail Carrier for 33 years in Davie County, and was co-founder and licensed Funeral Director for the Morrison-Studevent Funeral Homes of Lexington, and Mocksville.
Mr. Studevent was a member of Corinthian Lodge #17, Mocksville, Order of the Eastern Star, Davie County Education Union, and life member of the Piedmont District Funeral Directors Association.
His spiritual life was with Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Hamptonville, where he served as Deacon of the church, as well as Sunday school teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Cora Lee Blackburn Studevent of the home; one son, Clyde (Willie) Studevent, Jr. of Mocksville; one granddaughter, Gina (Jerome) Reid of Greensboro; one great-grandchild, Joshua White, also of Greensboro.
Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Mr. Clyde R. Studevent, Sr., will be conducted on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Hamptonville.
The Rev. Walter Tidline will officiate.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full masonic rites.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 7-8 p.m., in the Chapel of the Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home in Mocksville.
At other times, the family will be at the home of the son on Campbell Road, Mocksville.

VESTAL

JONESVILLE -- Mr. Colonel Martin "Bob" Vestal, 73, of Swan Creek Road, Jonesville, died Tuesday, October 5, 1999, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident, which also involved the death of his brother, Vertle Jones Vestal.
He was born June 14, 1926 in Yadkin County, to the late Harrison and Charity Pinnix Vestal.
He was retired from Brendles, Inc. and was an ordained minister.
Mr. Vestal was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey Vestal and Coy Vestal.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Jo Laffoon Vestal of the home; two daughters, Sandra (Bill) Groce of Yadkinville and Cheryl (Rick) Bledsoe of Jonesville; one sister, Pansy Nations of Jonesville; four brothers, Fred Vestal, Worth Vestal, Alton Vestal, all of Jonesville, and Elmer Vestal of Hamptonville; four grandchildren, Joey Groce, Tracy (Rick) Anglin, Ryan Bledsoe, and Erin Bledsoe; and one great-grandchild, Allie Anglin.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 8, 1999 at Bethel Baptist Church.
The Rev. Mark Elmore, the Rev. Flake Mason, and Tehren Swaim.
Burial will be in the church cemetery, with full military honors by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 2178 Bethel Road, Ronda, N.C. 28670.

VESTAL

JONESVILLE -- Mr. Vertle Jones Vestal, 76, of Armstrong Road, Jonesville, died [Tuesday, October 5, 1999] from injuries sustained in an automobile accident, that also involved the death of his brother, Colonel Martin "Bob" Vestal.
He was born September 26, 1923 in Yadkin County, to the late Harrison and Charity Pinnix Vestal.
He was retired from Hanes Dye & Finish in Winston-Salem.
Mr. Vestal was an executive member of T.P.A.
He had a hobby of flying and was a member of the Blue Ridge Flying Club.
Mr. Vestal was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a faithful choir member.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey Vestal and Coy Vestal.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Bobby Laffoon Vestal of the home; two daughters, Janice Shields and Jamie Davis both of Jonesville; one son, Michael (Kathi) Vestal of Pilot Mountain; a sister, Pansy Nations of Jonesville; four brothers, Fred Vestal, Worth Vestal, and Alton Vestal all of Jonesville, and Elmer Vestal of Hamptonville; and four grandchildren, Shannon Davis, Scottie Shields, Teresa Vestal, and Kimberly Vestal.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 8, 1999 at Bethel Baptist Church.
