PENDERGRASS
YADKINVILLE -- Mr. Harry Lee Pendergrass, Sr., 61, of 1605 Haire Road, died Friday, October 8, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 16, 1937 to George Pendergrass and Flo Walker Pendergrass Smith. He was a veteran of the US Army statoned in Fort Cason, Colorado and served with the 28th Infantry Divison in Heilbronn, Germany. He received a degree in Diesel Mechanics from Greer Diesel School, Chicago, Ill. in 1958. Mr. Pendergrass worked for Raodway Trucking in Kernersville for 32 years, retiring in 1995. He was preceded in death by his father, George Pendergrass in 1990; and a son, Darren T. Pendergrass in 1998. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Betty Hudson Pendergrass of the home; his children, Harry Lee Pendergrass, Jr., Dennis (Tina) Pendergrass, Libby Pendergrass, Betsi Pendergrass and fiance' Eric McBee, David Pendergrass, Bertha Sanchez, and Annette Pendergrass (daughter-in-law), all of Yadkinville; one sister, Jo Annowee McFarlane of Surfside Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Jack Pendergrass and R.G. Pendergrass, both of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren, Travis, Andy, and Randy Caudle of Boonville, Kristi and Trey Pendergrass of Yadkinville, Landon, Paige, Brittany, and McKayla Pendergrass of Yadkinville, and Angel Sanchez of Yadkinville; and one great-granddaughter, Lauren Caudle of Boonville. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 10, 1999 at 5:00 p.m. and visitation from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Gentry Family Chapel, Hwy. 601 North in Yadkinville. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. Roger Elmore. Burial will be in Harmony Grove Friends Cemetery October 11 at 9:00 a.m.

PRUITT
RURAL HALL -- Mrs. Louise Ashburn Pruitt, 75, of Rural Hall, died Saturday, October 9, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. A native of Surry County, she was born November 16, 1923 to Harrison and Mary Norman Ashburn. Mrs. Pruitt was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, where she had served as class secretary of the Elizabeth Barnett Sunday School Class for many years. She was retired from Hanes Knitting after 20 years of service. Mrs. Pruitt was a friend to all and was loved by all that knew her. Mrs. Pruitt is survived by her husband of 55 years, George Lee Pruitt of the home; one son, Dr. Jerry L. Pruitt and wife, Judy of Hickory; one daughter, Yvonne P. Creed of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Zach and Amanda Pruitt, and Benjamin and Jeremy Creed; one brother, Everett Ashburn of Mt. Airy; and one sister, Forrest ''Tossie'' Draughn of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 11, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel, officiated by Dr. David Hughes. Burial will follow in Skyline Memorial Park in Mt. Airy. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

RICKENBACH
Mr. Rudolph Rickenbach, III, 73 of Winston-Salem, died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Thursday morning, October 7, 1999, following a period of declining health. A native of Wood-Ridge, N.J., he was born December 9, 1925 to Rudolph and Anna Gray Rickenbach, II. Mr. Rickenbach was a member of Calvery Baptist Church, and was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Justine Withus Rickenbach in 1990. He is survived by two daughters, Ms. Deborah Rickenbach and Ms. Susan Jean Goldbeck, both of Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren, K.J., Lydia, and Madeline Goldbeck, all of Winston-Salem. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, officiated by Rev. Phil Henry. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Silas Creek Chapel.

STARLING
UNIONVILLE, N.C. -- Letha Osborne Starling, 88, of 2411 Killdeer Lane in Unionville, N.C., died Saturday, October 9, 1999 at the home of her daughter, Becky Hill, in Charlotte, N.C. She was born on May 21, 1911 to the late Rev. and Mrs. M.A. Osborne. Her early life was spent growing up in Methodist parsonages in Western North Carolina. She graduated from Glen Alpine High School in 1929, after which she attended and graduated from Davenport College in Lenoir, and Greensboro College in 1934. On May 27, 1935, she married Rev. Richard James Starling. She continued to live in parsonages in Western North Carolina until they retired in 1975. For a number of years, Mrs. Starling taught in schools in Virginia and North Carolina. Two daughters were born to this union: Mrs. Starr Coble of Mooresville and Mrs. Becky Hill of Charlotte. Rev. Starling predeceased his wife on July 12, 1999. She was also predeceased by her grandson-in-law and great-grandson, Mitchell and Joseph Freitag, in a plane crash in April of this year. Funeral services for Mrs. Starling will be held at Rolling Hills United Methodist Church in Monroe on Monday, October 11, 1999 at 10:30 a.m., followed by entombment at Mount Lawn Memorial Park in Boone, N.C on Monday afternoon. The family will greet visitors following the services at Rolling Hills Church. Survivors include her daughters, Starr Coble and husband, Mark of Mooresville and Becky Hill and husband, Ralph of Mint Hill; grandchildren, Robert Boyles, Jr. and wife, Elizabeth, Tom Boyles and wife, Bridget, Letel Barber and husband, Richard, Mary Beth Freitag, Jenny McMillan and husband, Huey, and Jim Hill and wife, Rhonda; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Presbyterian Home Care of Hospice, 217 Travis Ave., Charlotte, N.C. 28233; or Rolling Hills UMChurch Building Fund, 2691 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, N.C. 28110; or to a charity of the donor's choice. Gordon Funeral Service of Monroe is caring for the Starling family.

SURGNIER
Mrs. Luella Eugenia Surgnier, 89, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, October 7, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Surgnier was born March 2, 1910 to George Washington and Idabell Hutchinson Cralle. She was a member of of Ruskin United Methodist Church in Ruskin, Fla. She was preceded in death by her son, Dr. Richard V. Surgnier. Survivors include, one granddaughter, Sheryl Baker of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Jeff Surgnier of Winston-Salem and Rick Surgnier of Hickory; four great-grandchldren, Dia Baker, Jessica Surgnier, Jason Surgnier, and Olivia Surgnier. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

VACENDAK
BOONE -- Stephen Vacendak, 25, of Boone and Durham, died Friday, October 8, 1999 in Boone. He was born January 16, 1974 in Lawrence, Mass. Stephen was a graduate student in Geography at Appalachian State University and was of the Catholic faith. Surviving are his parents, Steve Vacendak of Rock Hill, S.C. and Patty Vacendak of Durham; a sister, Angie Vacendak of Durham; his paternal grandmother, Olga Vacendak of Rock Hill, S.C.; and his maternal grandmother, Angie Specht of St. Louis, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Boone. Father Conrad Hoover will officiate. Burial will follow in the Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the ASU Foundation for the Stephen Vacendak Scholarship in Geography, c/o Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C. 28607. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home in Boone.

WILSON
CAERLEON, WALES -- Peacefully, in Caerleon, Wales, R.L. (Bob) Wilson, 89, passed away on September 30, 1999. Much beloved by his wife, Peggy; his daughter, Margaret and her family, David, Ben, and Stephen (Bo) Blizard, fomerly of Winston-Salem, now residing in State College, Pennsylvania. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

BEGENDORF
SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. -- Albert J. Begendorf, Jr., 75, of Southbridge Drive, died Thursday, October 7, 1999 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on February 8, 1924 a son of the late Albert J. Begendorf, Sr. He moved to the area in 1989 from Greensboro, N.C. Mr. Begendorf was a cart attendant with Burroughs & Chapin and was a graduate of UNC at Chapel Hill. He was a WWII Marine Veteran and was Catholic. Surviving is his wife, Virginia W. Begendorf of the home. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. McMillan-Small Funeral Home is in charge if arrangements.

CRANFILL
JONESVILLE -- ''Nannie went to be with the Lord on October 8, 1999. The battle is over and the Victory is won.'' Mrs. Irene Shore Cranfill, 56, of Little Mountain Road, died Friday, October 8, 1999 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born June 27, 1943 in Yadkin County to Herman and Elsie Wagoner Shore. Mrs. Cranfill was retired from Yadkin Valley Economic Development District, Inc. (Y.V.E.D.D.I.) with several years of service. She was a faithful member of Victory Chapel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her father; three brothers, Benny, George, and Ken Shore; and two sisters, Betty Jo Patton and Martha Jane Gentry. Surviving are her husband of 38 years, Johnny Cranfill of the home; one daughter, Donna Cranfill Shore of Jonesville; a son, John Franklin Cranfill of Jonesville; three sisters, Judy S. Moore of Jonesville, Margaret (Kermit) Williams of Yadkinville, and Jan (Bob) Gentry of State Road; a special grandson, Jonathan C. Collins; her mother, Elsie Wagoner Shore of Jonesville; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Victory Chapel Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Spencer King and Rev. Kenny Pardue. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road, Jonesville.

ELLIOTT
BURLINGTON -- Mr. Thomas Milton Elliott, 72, of 1920 S. Ashland Dr., Burlington, N.C., passed away Friday, October 8, 1999 at 12:15 a.m. at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Tabor City, N.C. to the late Ambrose Vernon Elliott, Sr. and the late Mamie Ward Elliott. He was retired from AT&T and was a member of Graham Bible Fellowship. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 10, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. at Rich & Thompson Chapel, Burlington, N.C. conducted by Mr. Philip Bomberger. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lillian McDaniel Elliott of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Pamela Gustafson Poteat of Greensboro and Miss Karin M. Martin of Graham; a son, Mr. John Thomas Elliott of Graham; a sister, Mrs. Eloise Spivey of Loris, S.C.; a brother, Mr. Benjamin Elliott of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and four grandchildren. Mr. Elliott was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ophelia Glover and two brothers, Mr. A.V. Elliott, Jr. and Mr. Hanes Elliott. The family will be at the Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 until 8 p.m., Saturday. Other times they will be at the residence. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2364, 422 S. Spring St., Burlington, N.C. 27215.
