LAUTEN
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Mary Jane Yokley Lauten, died Monday, September 27, 1999 at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. She was born January 7, 1919 in Davidson County in the Wallburg Community. She was the only child of the late John Lewis Yokley and Mary Bessie Stone Yakley. She was married to Vernon Willie Lauten on December 18, 1937. Together they had eight children. She was preceded in death by her loving husband in 1972. Mrs. Lauten was a member of Parkview Primitive Baptist Church and retired from the cafeteria of Glenn High School. She was an avid bowler and NASCAR fan. Surviving are her sons, Ronnie Lauten and his wife, Barbara of Gumtree Road, Winston-Salem and Kent Lauten and his wife, Donna of Gumtree Road; daughters, Betty Hester and her husband, John of Kernersville, June Worrell and her husband, Alvin of Gumtree Road, Lynn Welch of Lexington, Brenda Luck and her husband, Wayne of Gumtree Road, Jonnie Shore and her husband, Mitch of Clemmons, and Paige Deal and husband, Dwight of Gumtree Road. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren, Terrie Sisk, Beth Davis, Christopher Hester, Eric Lauten, Mike, Jeffery, and Kevin Welch, Kennie Luck, Scott Shore, Lauren and Sarah Deal, and Ryan, Sean, Jared, and Jordan Lauten and her great-grandchildren, Bradley Perryman, Lindsay Sisk, Matthew and Colby Davis, John Hester III, Jimmy Bennett, Aloura Welch, and Chloe Lauten. Funeral services for Mrs. Lauten will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 30, 1999 at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain, Kernersville Chapel by Rev. Robert Motsinger and Rev. Don Griffin. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the Lauten homeplace. The family wishes to express their special appreciation to the staff of C-wing at Oak Summitt Nursing Center. Their concern and care for her and her family has been deeply appreciated over the past three years. The family also wishes to thank all of her friends for their special attention, cards, prayers, and visits. Our Mother has gone home and she will be missed by everyone she touched. NELSON
Mr. Wilbert Franklin Nelson, 84, of Winston-Salem, died early Tuesday morning, September 28, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. He resided several years with his nephew, Carl E. Styers and was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Tuttle Nelson. Mr. Nelson was born Jan. 6, 1915 in Stokes County to John Thomas and Glennie Ella Mae Shores Nelson. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and had retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after 40 years service. Mr. Nelson served five years in the United States Army in the European Theater during World War II. Surviving are a sister, May Delores Smith and a brother, George Quentin Nelson both of Winston-Salem; also a number of nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Bishop James Hassell. Burial will follow in Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Westfield. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
RAMSEY
C.J. (Chigger) Ramsey, 78, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Rocky Mount, Va., passed away Sunday, September 26, 1999. Born March 11, 1921, he was a son of the late Robert C. and Ethel George Ramsey. He was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis Ramsey and a sister, Luella (Tweet) Ramsey Richter. Surviving are three daughters, Sawyer Ramsey and husband, Robert Day of Parrish, Florida, Lt. Susan Klein and husband, Mark of Mansfield, Mass., and Jane R. Mulligan of Pennsylvania; a sister, Georgia Ann Cooper and husband, Wayne of St. Louis, Missouri; a brother, Lee Ramsey and wife, Flo of Rocky Mount, Va.; a sister-in-law, Sciota Ramsey of Rocky Mount; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 30, 1999 at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William K. Dawson officiating. Interment will follow in High Street Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. Lynch Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, Va. is in charge of local arrangements. A memorial service will be held at a later time in Winston-Salem, N.C.

KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Zita Barbara Peuffer Banks, 73, of 5321 Prince Charles Drive died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Banks was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Buchold, Germany, a daughter of the late Joseph and Betty Schmitt Peuffer. She was retired as a vice president of international affairs at Wachovia Bank and had served as secretary of Kernersville Seventh-day Adventist Church. Surviving are her husband, William Joseph Banks Jr. of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Irene B. and Roger Tise of Winston-Salem and Barbara B. and Lee Evins of Kennesaw, Ga.; a son and daughter-in-law, Vernon Joseph and Beth Banks of Kernersville; two sisters, Irene Shubert and Alma Jorb of Germany; a brother, Walter Peuffer of Germany; six grandchildren, Angela Tise Sampson, Roger F. Tise II, Joseph Lee Evins, Ryan Joseph Banks, Melinda Joy Banks and Melissa Ann Banks; and a great-grandson, Edward Andrew Sampson. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Kernersville Seventh-day Adventist Church by the Rev. Ronald Schmidt, the Rev. Ken Crawley and the Rev. Roberto Henriquez. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home. BLACKBURN
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Pearl Norman Blackburn, 99, formerly of 7655 Anthony Road died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the home of her daughter at 4211 Old Flat Rock Road with whom she had lived for several years. Mrs. Blackburn was born in Surry County a daughter of the late Peter and Betty McBride Norman. She attended Bethel United Methodist Church. She was a retiree of the Adams Millis Corp. and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Blackburn and a son, A.D. Blackburn. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Sadie B. and Ray Lasley of Kernersville; a son and daughter-in-law, Clay and Mary Ruth Blackburn of Manning, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Blackburn of Kernersville; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Wood and the Rev. Mervin Garrison officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Ms. Priscilla Jean Carter, 42, of 1907 Bethabara Pointe Circle passed away Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was a native and resident of Winston-Salem and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Parkland High School Class of 1976, and attended N.C. A&T State University and Winston-Salem State University. Priscilla was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was formerly employed at the Veterans Administration's Winton-Salem office. She is survived by a daughter, Quiana Nicole Banks; two sons, twins Kenny Gene Parmlee and Kevin Gerard Parmlee; her dear mother, Mary Carter Watson (Arthur) of High Point; three sisters, Gaynor Carter Hicks (Theartis) of Barrington, N.J., Mattie M. Carter and Mary Jane Watson; five brothers, Larry N. Carter (Carrie) of East Orange, N.J., Arthur Carter of Riviera Beach, Fla., Murray Lee Carter of Tuscon, Ariz., and Timothy Watson of Charlotte; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; a devoted friend, Bernard Teal; and many other caring friends. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at Mountlawn Pleasant Baptist Church. At the request of the family, there will be no public viewing of their loved one. (RUSSELL)

MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Mabel Wood Cleary, 87, the widow of Alonzo Cleary of Galax Trail, formerly of Wilkes County, died Wednesday night, Oct. 25 2000, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Cleary was born March 21, 1913, in Wilkes County to James Oliver and Josie Wyatt Wood. She was a member of Central View Baptist Church and a former member of Hilltop Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, James Douglas Cleary of Ruidoso, N.M.; a daughter, LaRue Cleary and husband Kenneth of Pilot Mountain; four grandchildren, Richard Cleary of Ft. Worth, Texas, Sandra Cleary of Little Rock, Ark. Kenneth and wife Becky Johnson of Dobson and Charlene Johnson of Winston-Salem; five great-grandchildren, Kini Johnson and Kirkland Johnson both of Dobson, Michelle Hancock and Jennifer Hindman both of Little Rock, Ark. and Karin Cleary of Ft. Worth, Texas; and two great-great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Cleary and Kaylin Cleary both of Little Rock, Ark. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Miller Funeral Chapelwith the Rev. Muncie Absher and the Rev. Marty Nixon officiating. Mr. James Steven ''Steve'' Ellis, 51, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 11, 1949, in Forsyth County to Carroll Eugene and Faye Cook Ellis. Mr. Ellis was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Gary Eugene Ellis. Surviving are his wife, Sharon A. Ellis of Winston-Salem; his mother, Faye Robbins of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Nikki Ellis of Kernersville; a stepbrother, Burton E. Brown of King; two nieces, Kim Ellis of Walkertown and Tracey Asbury of Winston-Salem; two nephews, Gary Ellis Jr. of Walkertown and Dustin Brown of King; and a cousin, Elvis Griffin of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends after the service. A military graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Woodland Cemetery by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Unit, Greensboro.

NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mr. Kyle M. Gentry, 73, former sheriff of Wilkes County, former chief of police of North Wilkesboro and former N.C. Highway Patrolman of J Street passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 25, 2000, at his home. Mr. Gentry was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Alleghany County to Charles Cleveland and Cordelia McLean Gentry. Surviving are his wife, Jean Reeves Gentry of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kim Gentry of Wilkesboro; a daughter, Deborah Mathis of Lewisville; a brother, George Gentry of Hendersonville; five sisters, Grace Woodruff of Glade Valley, Edna Medici of Cranston, R.I., Louise Friddle and Jean Pence both of Greensboro and Joan Pendry of Lakeland, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Cagney Gentry of Wilkesboro and Ashley Kyle Mathis of Lewisville. Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 28 at Elk Creek Primitive Baptist Church in the Piney Creek community of Alleghany County with Elder Jess Higgins and Elder Curtis Hash officiating.
