BAKER
KING -- Mrs. Janie Louise Copeland Baker, 79, of King, N.C., died at Forsyth Medical Center following a period of declining health. A native of Denmark, S.C., she was born July 4, 1920 to Samuel Reed and Hattie Bennett Copeland. Mrs. Baker was a faithful and active member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church as long as her health permitted and had retired from R.J. Reynolds with over 27 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Scarborough Baker on January 18, 1995. Mrs. Baker is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William L. Collins and wife, Karlene of Clemmons, N.C.; two granddaughters, Melissa Collins Leslie and husband, Sam of Edisto Island, S.C. and Michele Collins and husband, Chris Buamann of Charlotte, N.C.; a special niece, Mary Still Poindexter of the home and two nephews, Jerome Still of Winston-Salem and Buddy Still of Smith Mtn. Lake, Va. A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 3, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel, officiated by Dr. Cecil Cave. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. CHAMBERLAIN
MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Julian ''Bud'' Chamberlain, 80, of Lone Hickory Community, Mocksville, died December 1, 1999 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. He was born June 3, 1919 to the late Lon and Lillian Baggarly Chamberlain. He was a retired Carpenter and of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Chamberlain was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Ruth Smith. Surviving are his wife, Inez Bell Chamberlain; one daughter, Linda ''Howard'' Pardue of Jonesville; a brother, Roger ''Julia'' Chamberlain of Mocksville, N.C.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 1999 at Gentry Family Chapel, Yadkinville conducted by Rev. Howard Wagoner with burial in Yadkin Memorial Gardens. HAIRFIELD
Beverly ''Bev'' D. Hairfield, 47, of Morganton, died Tuesday, November 30 1999 at Grace Hospital. Born June 5, 1952 in Burke County, he was the son of Elizabeth Gaston Hairfield and the late Dr. Beverly D. Hairfield. He was retired from Broyhill Furniture as the Quality Insurance Manager and was the owner of Blue Ridge Music of Morganton. He was former president of Tablerock Trout Unlimited and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Connie Sigmon Hairfield; sons, Charles Douglas Hairfield and John Gaston Hairfield; and sisters, Frances Taylor Hairfield and Nancy Hairfield Sharp. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, December 2, 1999 at 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Robert Roach and Rev. James Marsh, Jr. The family will receive friends following the service in the church mezzanine. Memorial donations in Mr. Hairfield's honor may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 200 N. HAWKINS
WALNUT COVE -- Mrs. Ola Virginia Alley Hawkins, 86, died Wednesday, December 1, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 27, 1913 in Stokes County to Ernest Len and Jettie Florence Wood Alley. She was a member of Walnut Cove Primitive Baptist Church and was a farmer. She was married to Sam Nealy Hawkins on May 28, 1941 and was preceded in death by him on June 26, 1996. Her brother, Lev Alley also preceded her in death. Surviving are three sisters, Ella Reid, Mattie Nelson, and Rachel (Edd) Powell all of Walnut Cove; five brothers, James (Alma) Alley, Lester (Dorothy) Alley all of Walnut Cove, and David (Grace) Alley, Junior Alley, and Odell (Betty) Alley all of Danbury; five sisters-in-law, Ida Alley, Lena Stephens, Ruth Reid, Jettie Crim, and Lillie Preston; and several nieces and nephews. A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held Friday, December 3, 1999 at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the North View Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Elder Jess Higgins and Elder James Wilkins will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and other times at their respective homes.
LOWDER
BRISTOL, VIRGINIA -- Mr. Carlton Boner Lowder, 85, of 528 West Valley Drive, Bristol, Virginia, died Tuesday, November 30, 1999 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Lowder was a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and the son of Bernie Carlton Lowder and Artie Boner Lowder. After graduation from the University of North Carolina in 1934, he worked for Hanes Knitting Mills in 1934, then for Tennessee Eastman Company in 1935, and he moved to Bristol in 1938 to join Dent K. Burk Associates. He was senior partner of the firm for many years, and he remained active until three years ago. Mr. Lowder was a member of First Baptist Church of Bristol. He was a Trustee of both First Baptist and Virginia Intermont College, and he was on the Board of Directors of the Bristol Cancer Society. Mr. Lowder is survived by his wife of 60 years, Annette Johnson Lowder; one son, Dr. Stephen C. Lowder of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; one daughter, Annette Burton of New York City; one sister, Doris Wright of Butler, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Katherine Lowder of Charlotte, Meredith Lowder of Winston-Salem, Staff Sgt. John Burton of Montgomery, Alabama, and Lewis Carlton Burton of Knoxville; two great-grandchildren, James and Ellen Burton of Norwich, England; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Carlton Boner Lowder will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, December 2, 1999 at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Rand Forder officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Tayloe, Luther Stinnett, Carl Puckett, Jessee Jones, Lee Hill, James Long, and Robert Gillion. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and employees of Dent K. Burk Associates. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Akard Funeral Home. MARTIN
Mrs. Elberta Bryant Martin, 85, formerly of 1214 Lombardy Steet, Greensboro, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 1999 at the Springwood Care Center of Forsyth. She was a native of Commerce, Ga. and had resided in the Greensboro for over forty years. She was a member of the Reeds Memorial CME Church in Greensboro, was a member of the Old North State, Daughter of Elks, Greensboro, N.C., and was a devoted homemaker. She was preceded in passing by her husband, Charlie Martin. She is survived by a sister, Erma Bryant Rice of Winston-Salem and many cousins, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, December 3, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. from the Hanes Memorial CME Church with Dr. Michael K. Williams officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. MCBRIDE
Mrs. Grace Rogers McBride, 77, of 126 Buckingham Road, died suddenly on Sunday, November 28, 1999 in Washington, D.C. Mrs. McBride was born in Amarillo, Texas to Jesse and Doris A. Rogers. After college, she settled with her husband in Amarillo, later also living in California and Virginia. In 1960 She moved with her family to Winston-Salem, where she became an active participant in many aspects of the community. For many years she was active in women's amateur golf throughout the Carolinas. She was particularly involved in working with the Forsyth Mental Health Association and as a patron of the North Carolina School of the Arts and Winston-Salem Symphony. She was a member of Knollwood Baptist Church, the Giannini Society, the Piedmont Opera Guild, and the Winston-Salem Symphony. Mrs. McBride is survived by her husband of 57 years, George H. McBride; her daughter, Amanda McBride of Durham, N.C.; her son and daughter-in-law, R. Elliott and Nancy R. McBride of Raleigh, N.C.; her sister, Marcella R. Lanham of Amarillo, Texas; her grandchildren, Thaddeus R. McBride of Boston, Mass. and Abigal B. McBride of Palo Alto, Calif.; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 3, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the Knollwood Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. MORGAN
Ernest Luther Morgan, Jr., passed away November 29, 1999 in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born June 24, 1920 in Forsyth County to Ernest Luther, Sr. and Stella Potts Morgan. A graduate of Mineral Springs High School, he resided in Forsyth County throughout his life. Mr. Morgan served his country with honor during World War II. A member of the U.S. Army 81st Wildcat Division, he fought in combat missions throughout the Pacific arena. Mr. Morgan worked for several local companies during his career and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 22 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Kathryn Burke Morgan; his parents; his sister, Margaret M. Culler; his brother, Charles F. Morgan; two nephews; and several in-laws. Mr. Morgan is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Darla M. and Wm. Brent Johnson; his brother, William E. Morgan and wife, Peggy; his sisters, Ruth M. Komenak, Cora M. Vick, Helen M. Highfill, and Bobbie M. Futrell and husband, Ralph; family friend, Mary Francis Moser; his mother-in-law, Mrs. A.D. Burke, Sr.; his in-laws, Paul E. Burke, T. Wake Burke and wife, Lucy, William A. ''Buddy'' Burke and wife, Betty, Doris B. Todd, and Louise D. Burke; numerous nieces and nephews; and several special friends from R.J.R. Rev. Robert E. PHILADELPHIA, PA. -- Annie B. Rice, 65, of 7708 Woolston, Philadelphia, Pa., passed away Saturday, November 27, 1999 after a brief illness. She was a native of Winston-Salem, N.C. She attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. She was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University, Class of 1957. She also receive her Masters Degree from Temple University Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Annie and Jesse Rice; one sister, Inez R. Flowers; and three brothers, Allison, Daniel, and Joe B. Rice. She was a member of Love Missionary Baptist Fellowship and was retired from the Department of Public Welfare of Philadelphia. She is survived by five sisters, Clara R. Hairston, Mable Sims, and Dorothy Coffer of Philadelphia, Pa. and Louisa Rice and Geneva Britt of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Jessie Rice of Philadelphia and Benjamin Rice of Detroit, Mich.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, December 3, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. from the Love Missionary Baptist Fellowship in Philadelphia.
