NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Anna Cropps Holbrook, 95, of Woodhaven Road, widow of Mack Holbrook died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at Chapel Hill AME Zion Church with the Rev. William Speas, the Rev. John Allen and the Rev. John A. Speaks officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the church. Mrs. Holbrook was born Jan. 24, 1905, in Wilkes County to John and Dora Harris Cropps. She was a charter member of Chapel Hill AME Zion Church. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Yvonne) Thomas of North Wilkesboro; two sons, Richard Mack Holbrook Sr. and Ronald Holbrook both of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Mavis Brown of North Wilkesboro; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Charles Anthony Johnson, 42, of Winston-Salem, died Oct. 23, 2000. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church in Winston-Salem. Burial will be in Collins Cemetery in Madison. He was a native of Forsyth County, a member of Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church and a cab driver. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hattie B. Martin. He is survived by his children, Chris McMahan and Tracy McMahan of Winston-Salem and Latosha Gill of Morganton; father and stepmother James E. Johnson Sr. and Minnie Johnson; four brothers, James E. Johnson Jr., Michael Johnson, Danny Johnson and Eric Johnson, all of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Kevin and Zebedia of Morganton; and a host of aunts and other relatives and friends. Mrs. Vera Lucille Scales Leasure, formerly of 3660 Spaulding Drive, Independence Village Retirement Home and C.R.T. Golden Lamb Rest Home, departed this life for eternal rest Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born to Nate and Delphine Martin Scales in Madison on Oct. 10, 1905. She was a former teacher at Woodland Avenue School, Winston-Salem, and a retiree from the Washington, D.C., public schools. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Surviving are her nieces, Jean Hairston, Charlotte Gwyn, Delphine Peterson, Dorothy Dillahunt, Mattie Scales, Irene Scales, Jackie Cardwell and Alma Joyner; nephews Paul Scales and Devar Scales; great-nieces and nephews; caring friends, Hubert and Ericsteen Lash, George and Audrey Robinson, Helen Reynolds and Sinclair, Lena and Rayonette Crowder; and a host of other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, in Collins Cemetery in Madison, with Minister Purvis Morris officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to C.R.T. THOMASVILLE -- Mrs. Frances Marie Beamer Priddy, 72, of 3061 Denton Road died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 6, 1928 ,in Mount Airy, a daughter of Charlie and Vissie Stanley Beamer. She was retired from Davidson County Senior Services. She loved to bowl and was a member of Classic Seniors Bowling League/Davidson County Senior Citizen in 1995, a volunteer at Community General Hospital, home delivery of meals in Davidson County and a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Louise Moore Sunday-school class. She was twice married. Her first marriage was to Murrell Sanderson and her second marriage was to Boyd Priddy. Both preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Katherine Dawn Honeycutt and her husband, Ken of Thomasville and Mrs. Marybeth Marie Kindley and her husband, Harold of Thomasville; a son, Murrell P. Sanderson Jr. and his wife, Diane of Thomasville; a stepson, Alan Priddy and his wife, Libby of Thomasville; three sisters, Mrs. Gypsy Dumas and Mrs. Ruth Simmons, both of Mount Airy, and Mrs. Dwight (Mildred) Matthews of Boon ville. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000 in Family Funeral Care Chapel of Thomasville. The family will receive friends after the funeral. MOCKSVILLE -- Hunter Alexander Queen, the infant son of Matthew H. Queen and Wendy M. Zimmerman of Farmington Road, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandparents, Kevin and Rachel Zimmerman of Advance; his paternal grandparents, Gary and Jennie Gordan of Walkertown; and was loved by several aunts and uncles. Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Elbaville United Methodist Church and other times the family will assemble at the home of Kevin and Rachel Zimmerman, 282 Zimmerman Road, Advance. A graveside service will be held after the visitation at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Jack Wallace officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials can be made to Elbaville United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 2825 N.C. Highway 801 S., Advance, NC 27006. SANTIAGO
Donna Lynn Batchelor Santiago died Sept. 8, 2000, as a result of a trailer fire. She was born Nov. 2, 1963, to Pamela and Rick Batchelor of Winston-Salem. Surviving are her former husband, Johnny Santiago; two children, Nickolas and Erika Santiago; grandparents Eva and C.C. Henderson; an uncle, Bill Bedsaul of Largo, Fla.; and two sisters, Bonnie (Chuck) Zopfi of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Rena Bryan and her son, Stephen of Winston-Salem. The family received friends at the service held Sunday, Sept. 17 at Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at Parklawn Cemetery. She will be buried with her mother, Pamela Kilgore.
SCOFIELD
Dr. Robert E. Scofield of Winston-Salem passed away Oct. 27, 2000. Dr. Scofield was born Jan. 29, 1925. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Montclair State Teachers College in New Jersey. He received his doctorate in education from LeHigh University. He was director of pupil personnel services for Sparta High School, Sparta, N.J., and was education co-coordinator of the United Methodist Children's Home in Winston-Salem. He was also co-owner of Covenant Spring Christian Camp and Farm in Westfield. Dr. Scofield was a Crosby Scholar Mentor at R.J. Reynolds High School. He attended First Assembly of God Church. He was a Sunday school teacher to the children at the Children's Home for many years and dedicated his life to helping others. Dr. Scofield was preceded in death by his brother, Harry E. Scofield in August. Surviving are his wife, Olga; his son, Robert J. and wife Dauna and two grandchildren, Kelsey and Christopher of Winston-Salem; son Douglas H. and wife Cathy and grandchildren Jonathan, Susanna, Hannah and Andrew of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter Nancy Crocker and granddaughter Alyssa of Chesapeake, Va.; brother Donald Scofield; and sister Luellen Hin. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30 in the Woosley Chapel at The Children's Home on Reynolda Road with the Rev. Donald Scofield and the Rev. Larry Jones officiating. Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler's Funeral Home, Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem. Burial will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Children's Home. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the care he was giv en by the nurses and doctors on 4A and 5C ICU at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Cen ter.

Mrs. Lucile Peddycord Sell, 83, of 3310 Williston Road, Walkertown, widow of W.E. (Buck) Sell, died Thursday morning at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Sell was born in Forsyth County Oct. 8, 1917, a daughter of Samuel G. and Effie Hastings Peddycord. She was a retired employee of N.C. Baptist Hospital and a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church. Mrs. Sell was preceded in death by her husband in 1973, a daughter, Carolyn Dymott, in 1995, an infant son, Kent Sell, in 1951 and by four sisters and two brothers. Surviving are a daughter, Anna (Don) Bryant of Walkertown; two sons, Michael (Cheryl) Sell of Belews Creek and Larry Sell of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Lynne (Jeff) Morison, Darien (Jamie) Sell, LeAnn Sell and Kevin Sell; two great-grandsons, Darrell Southern and Christopher Sell; and two sisters, Dorothy (Clarence) Sell of Winston-Salem and Opal Weavil of Arden. Funeral servies will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pisgah United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mike Swofford. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. James Harold Thompson Sr., 66, of Liberty Church Road died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with Dr. David Gilbreath, the Rev. David Kiser and Mr. Richard Carter officiating. Burial will be in Eatons Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Mr. Thompson was born March 3, 1934, in Wilkes County to Eva Reavis Thompson of Yadkinville and the late Odell Thompson. He was retired from Lee Distribution Co. of Mocksville as a truck driver and had also worked part time with Wisecarver Trucking. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He attended Eatons Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, James Harold Thompson Jr. Survivors in addition to his mother are his wife, Polly Carter Thompson of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Freddie (Sharon) Cave of Mocksville; a sister, Betty Ward of Statesville; two brothers, Reavis Thompson of Yadkinville and Roy Lee Thompson of Mocksville; three stepgrandchildren, Myra, Daren and Mickey Cave; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Rachel and Megan Cave. BOWLES
Barlow J. Bowles, passed away in Naples, Fla. on September 23, 1999 after a lengthy illness. Barlow was born in Walnut Cove, N.C. on December 12, 1917, the son of the late William Francis and Lilly Fair Bowles. He was retired form the N.C. Security Commission, Agriculture Department, after 30 years of service. At a later date he and his wife operated Bowles Greenhouse & Shrubbery in Walnut Cove for approximately seven years before moving to Naples, Fla. in 1980. He was a veteran of World War II with an honorable discharge and a member of the First Baptist Church in Naples, Florida. Survivors include his devoted wife, Hazel Fulp Bowles of 58 years; one nephew, Dr. W.F. Bowles III of Georgetown, Texas; one niece, Mrs. Julie McCray of Lafette, Ga.; one cousin, Lois Dodson-Smith of Walnut Cove; and a number of cousins in Texas. Mrs. Bowles would like to thank their many friends and neighbors as well as the doctors and nurses for all they did during Barlow's illness and death. Services were private and burial will be in Walnut Cove, N.C. (Collier Funeral & Cremation Center, Naples, Florida)
