VALENTINE
Mr. Paul Eugene Valentine, 84, of Reidsville Rd., Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, November 29, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Valentine was born April 22, 1915 to James Henry and Bertie Geneva Hauerton Valentine. He was a former employee of A.T.&T. having retired in 1997. He is survived by two sons, Charles Eugene Valentine of Raleigh and James Paul Valentine and his wife, Donna of Forest, Va.; two daughters, Patricia V. McMullen and her husband, Dan of Winston-Salem and Betty V. Joyce and her husband, Bobby of Belews Creek; seven grandchildren, Darrell and Michael Joyce, Kimberly Clark, David and Chad Valentine, and Cindy and Jeff Valentine; and nine great-grandchildren, Micah Joyce, Derrick and Chelsea Clark, Ryan and Ashley Terry, Joseph, Michael, and Andrew Valentine, and Ethan Valentine. The funeral will be held Thursday, December 2, 1999 in the Chapel of Family Funeral Care at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Bobby Roberson and Rev. Frank Shumate will officiate. VOSS
Mr. Larry Edward Voss, 63, of King, died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on November 30, 1999. He was born in Forsyth County on March 16, 1936 to Franklin DeWitt and Viola Maye Brewer Voss. Mr. Voss was a graduate of John W. Hanes High School and had retired in 1986 from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a supervisor in plant protection with 34 years of service. He was a member of Bethabara Moravian Church and a grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 20 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Helen Walser, Frances Tilley, and Doris Harbin. Surviving are his two sons, Michael Gregory Voss and his wife, Kelly and Steven B. Voss both of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Devan Elaine Voss; one sister, Elizabeth V. Pipkin of Winston-Salem; his special friend, Marie Umberger; and his former wife, Katie T. Voss of N. Myrtle Beach; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be 12:30 p.m Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Bill Garrard officiating. WILLIAMS
Evelyn Harmon Williams, (Mrs. Ralph W.), 91, formerly of Salisbury, Maryland, died suddenly Sunday, November 28, 1999. Called Anne-Anne (mother's mother in Turkish) by her loved ones, Mrs. Williams was visiting her granddaughter in Winston-Salem for the Thanksgiving weekend. Her last days were spent attending church with family, shopping, playing piano and ukulele, and having fun with her three great-grandchildren. She was the daughter of William Henry Harmon and Minnie Hastings Harmon. Mrs. Williams was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Salisbury, Md.; the Ladies Oriental Shrine Club of the Eastern Shore; Order of the Eastern Star; Town and Country Garden Club; and the Worcester County Garden Club. She was a Judge Emeritus for the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Her family includes her daughter, Susan Habermeier (Hans); her son, Daniel Harmon Williams (Linda); four grandchildren, Laura H. Johannsen (Jeff), Ellen H. Wallis (Brett), Melanie K. Williams, and Elisa K. Williams; three great-grandchildren, Grant M. Johannsen, Katharyn E. Wallis, and John T. Wallis; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins in Maryland. She was preceded in death by her sister, Katharyn Elizabeth Harmon; her husband, Ralph Washington Williams; and their infant son, Ralph Neal Williams. SUPE
CLEMMONS -- Mr. Joseph Paul Supe, 94, of Clemmons, N.C., passed away Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at Brian's Health and Retirement Center in Winston-Salem. He was born May 1, 1905 in Czechoslovakia to Cyril and Katherina Supe. Mr. Supe was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian in 1953 and second wife, Josephine in 1978; and a step-son, Sherwood Manuel in 1990. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Shirley K. Allen and her husband, Charles H. Allen of Harsens Island, Michigan, Mrs. Evelyn L. Swanson of Manistee, Michigan, and Mrs. Ann M. Harbury and husband, Albert L. Harbury of Clemmons, N.C.; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Supe retired from General Motors in Detroit, Michigan and was a concertmaster of the Redford Symphony in the 1970's. Memorial services will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan on Saturday, November 13, 1999. KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. F. Lee Tesh, 77, of 1 Stafford Oaks Drive, Kernersville, died Friday, November 5, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Davidson County October 3, 1922 to George and Lois Kimel Tesh. Mr. Tesh was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kernersville. He served in the United States Army during WWII and was a retired Vice President of Pine Hall Brick Company, after 50 years of service. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tesh was preceded in death by his first wife, Eloise Tesh in 1982. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Arel Tesh of the home; two daughters, Teresa Harris of Harrisonburg, Va. and Julia Tesh of Winston-Salem; one step-daughter, Suzanne Penland and husband, Ronnie of Winston-Salem; two step-sons, Stephen Smith and wife, Sherry of Deep Gap, N.C. and Gregory Smith and wife, Paula of Wilmington; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; two sisters, Rachel Harvey of Ft. Meyers, Fla. and Pauline Daniels and husband, Ray of Clemmons; and four brothers, John Tesh and wife, Sharon of Altoona, Fla, David Tesh and wife, Wilma of Lexington, George Tesh and wife, Donna of Lexington, and Stephen Tesh and wife, Donna of Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 8, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church of Kernersville by Rev. George Murray. VANCE
Charles Fogle Vance, Jr., 75, of 235 Fairfax Drive, died Thursday, November 4, 1999. Mr. Vance was born in Winston-Salem, October 4, 1924, to Charles Fogle Vance and Margaret Vaughn Vance. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Eleanor James Vance, to whom he married May 10, 1952; their four children, Lucy Vance of Caswell Beach, N.C., Charles Fogle Vance III and wife, Lori of Portland, Oregon, James Burton Vance and wife, Georgia of Atlanta, and Margaret Vance Snoke and husband, Jack also of Atlanta; six grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. William W. (Lulu Hall) Fetzer of Summerville, S.C. Following graduation from R.J. Reynolds High School, 1942, Mr. Vance entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, receiving his B.A. in Physics, 1946 and his J.D. from U.N.C. Law School, 1949. At the University he was Speaker of the Student Legislature, and President of the Student Body, a member of Grail and the Golden Fleece honorary societies, and Sigma Nu social fraternity. During WWII he served with the U.S. Army, 1944-45. Mr. Vance opened his office for the practice of law in Winston-Salem, 1949. He was Assistant Solicitor of the Municipal Court 1951052. Joining Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, 1952, he became a partner in 1957 and was a senior member of the firm at his death. He was a member of North Carolina and American Bar Associations, American College of Trial Lawyers, permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference, American Judicature Society, National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel, and the American Counsel Association. He was a recipient of the Whitney North Seymour Medal awarded by the American Arbitration Association. Services to the Bar and the public included: President, Forsyth County Bar Association; Member of the Board of Legal Aid Society of Forsyth County; Chairman, Labor Law Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association; and Councilor of the North Carolina State Bar Council. Mr. Vance's numerous civic activities included: member of the Rotary Club of Winston-Salem, President of the Winston-Salem Symphony, President of Forsyth Country Club, Member of the Board of Directors of The Moravian Home, Trustee and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Salem Academy and College, Trustee of Moravian College and Theological Seminary, Bethlehem, Pa., and Family Services, a United Way agency. Mr. Vance was particularly active in the Home Moravian Church, where he taught Sunday School, played in the band, sang in the choir, was on the Boards of both the Elders and Trustees of the church. He also served on the Board of Elders and was a Trustee of Salem Congregation, which comprises the 13 Moravian Churches in this community. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday, November 5, 1999 at Voglers, Main Street, Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Home Moravian Church. The burial will follow at God's Acre. WINGFIELD
THOMASVILLE -- Mrs. Jeanette Louise Wingfield, beloved mother, grandma, sister, and aunt, departed this life peaceful on Thursday, November 4, 1999 to be with our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Mrs. Wingfield was 83 and a resident of 809 Dogwood Road. She was born August 14, 1916 in Martinsville, Va., the daughter of James George and Rosa Thacker George. She had lived the greater part of her life in this area. She was a homemaker. She was of the Primitive Baptist Faith and attended Mt. Shepherd Primitive Baptist Church in Asheboro. On July 4, 1942, she was married to Isaac Jones Wingfield, who went to be with the Lord on September 22, 1997. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Evelyn) Buchanan of Thomasville; two sons, Larry Douglas Wingfield and his wife, Lillian and Kenneth Lee Wingfield, both of Winston-Salem; her twin sister, Mrs. Geneva Eggleston of Ridgeway, Va., sisters, Mrs. Clara Roberts of Axton, Va. and Mrs. Victoria Grubbs of Richmond, Va.; eight grandchlidren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 1999 in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Patrick County, Va. with Elder Jim Moody officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Wingfield will lie in-state at her home at 809 Dogwood Rd. and the family will receive friends Saturday from 7 p.m until 9 p.m. at the home. The day of the service, Mrs. Wingfield will be placed in the church an hour prior to the service. CHARLOTTE -- Emily Margaret Turner Wright, September 13, 1913-December 18, 1999, died at Southminster, 8919 Park Rd., Charlotte, N.C. She was predeceased by her husband, James Joseph Wright, Jr., of Greensboro, N.C. She was the daughter of Perry Boston Turner and Dora Alice Carroll of Stokes County; the sister of Kathryn Rumell Turner and Carolyn Turner Jones, of King, N.C., and Alice Turner Masten, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; the mother of Cydne Wright Farris, wife of Ray Simpson Farris, and James Joseph Wright, III, husband of Margaret Miller Wright; the grandmother of Ray Simpson Farris, III, husband of Blair Duwe Farris, Emily Farris Wall, wife of Edwin Craig Wall, III, Margaret Peden Wright, and James Joseph Wright, IV; and the great grandmother of Edwin Craig Wall, IV and Syney Elizabeth Farris, all of Charlotte, N.C. WADDELL
SALISBURY -- Mr. James Andrew Waddell, Jr., 63, of Hidden Creek Circle, died Friday, November 12, 1999 at Rowan Regional Medical Center following a period of illness. He was born October 9, 1936 in Rowan County, a son of James Andrew Waddell, Sr. and Mary Gertrude Fox Waddell. He attended Spencer City Schools and was the first to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte's criminal justice program in 1972. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam. He was a police officer in Winston-Salem for 13 years and served as police chief for the town of Pilot Mountain. He was also a former real estate agent and a contract news carrier for the Salisbury Post before retiring. Mr. Waddell was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church, the Men's Sunday School Class; the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post #342, the Franklin Ellis Lions Club, the American Philatelic Society since 1971, the Woodman of the World for 25 years, and was one of the first three people that organized the Rowan County Genealogy Society at the Rowan County Public Library. He is survived by his wife, Barbara P. Waddell, whom he married on July 3, 1958; four daughters, Gwen W. Pfeifer, of Cary, N.C., Karen W. Cole, of New London, N.C., Laura W. Elliott, of Mebane, N.C., and Amy W. Bogle, of Salisbury, N.C.; his mother, Mary Gertrude Fox Waddell; one brother, Charles T. Waddell, of Winston-Salem; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 15 at Franklin Presbyterian Church, where the body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service. Dr. Larry Summey will officiate. Interment will follow in Rowan Memorial Park. WAYNICK
Mr. Eddie Dale Waynick, age 36, of 3955 High Point Rd., Lot #48, Winston-Salem, died Friday, November 12, 1999 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mr. Waynick was born in Forsyth County, a son of the late Eloise Landreth Waynick and Joe Gray. He was a graduate of Parkland High School and an employee of AMP Inc. He was preceded in death by his mother; and a sister, Elaine Weavil. Surviving are his father, of Colfax; two nieces, Mary Ellen Guthrie, of Kernersville and Miranda Emily Abueg, of Winston-Salem; several friends; and other relatives. Funeral service will be conducted Monday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain chapel by Rev. Mike Jefferson, with burial to follow in Mt. Gur Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and other times, at the home of his cousin, Donna Thomas, 125 Corbin St., Winston-Salem.
