YOKELEY
Dr. Gilbert William Yokeley, 94, died at his home, 2848 Reynolds Drive, on Monday, January 24, 2000. He was born January 31, 1905 in Davidson County to William J. and Joyce Yokeley. He attended Weaverville College (now Brevard) on a baseball scholarship. He graduated from the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston in 1933. He always said that he was proud of the fact that he started his dental practice with his brother, Dr. Karon M. Yokeley. He continued in active dental practice until 1985 and maintained his office downtown until June 1999. He was married to Delia Porter Graul December 5, 1942 who predeceased him on February 5, 1994. He is survived by one daughter, Delia Grant Yokeley of Powhatan, Virginia and several nephews and nieces. Dr. Yokeley was a charter member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He served in the N.C. National Guard from 1923 until he entered the Army on active duty when World War II began. He served on active duty for four and one-half years, attaining the rank of Lt./Col. He saw combat duty in North Africa and Italy. After World War II, he again served in the Reserves until he retired. He was involved with the formation of the 312th Evacuation Hospital and wanted to go overseas with this unit during the Vietnam War, but was unable to go because of age. He was honored by the Reserve Officers Association in 1998 for 52 years of service and for 75 years of military service. He was scheduled to receive the highest award from the Employers Supporting the Guard and Reserve on Friday night. Dr. Yokeley was a member of the Forsyth County Dental Society of which he was Past President and the Second District Dental Society of which he was also a Past President. He was a member of the North Carolina Dental Society and a life member of the American Dental Association. He was recognized by the North Carolina Dental Society in 1998 for having attended 66 consecutive annual meetings. In 1997, Dr. Yokeley received the Life Time Support Award from the University of Texas Houston Dental Branch. He was also the Past President of the University of Texas Dental Branch Alumni Association. He received the Life Time Support Award from Brevard College and was recognized by the Lions Club for 65 years of service. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 25, 2000 at the residence at 2848 Reynolds Drive from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. and the graveside service at Forsyth Memorial Park on Wednesday, January 26, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 5019 Nations Crossing, Suite 217, Charlotte, N.C. 28217.
STRUPE
Dr. James Gray Strupe, 4600 Country Club Road, died Sunday, Dec . 5, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Nov . 17, 1927 to the late Ivie Levene and Susie Critz Strupe. Dr. Strupe graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and Wake Forest College. During the Korean Conflict he served at the Army Chemical Center, Edgewood, Md. He received degrees in dentistry and orthodontics from Schools of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He practice dentistry from 1958 until 1966 and orthodontics from 1966 until 1992 in Winston-Salem. He was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church and of the David Jones Sunday School Class. Dr. Strupe is survived by two sons, James Gray Strupe, Jr. and wife Barbara Oliver Strupe of Camp Hill, Pa., and Philip Michael Strupe and wife, Vicki Jones Strupe of Lewisville, N.C.; a daughter, Elisabeth Strupe Hopkins and husband, Craig Vernon Hopkins of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Cathryn Strupe Hopkins; and two sisters, Mary Sue Strupe Neal of Richmond, Va. and Sybil Strupe Rights of Greensboro, N.C. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec . 8, 1999 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road, by Dr. Worth Green, the Right Reverend Graham Rights, and the Reverend John G. Rights. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler and Sons Main Street Chapel. TOLSON
LAMAR -- Beatrice Watford Tolson, 89, died Monday morning in the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee after an illness. Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lamar United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Lamar Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home, Lamar Chapel. Mr. Tolson, wife of the late Clarence ''Buck'' Tolson, was born in Darlington County the daughter of the late Manly and Rosa Lee Odom Watford. She and her husband lived most of their married life in Winston-Salem before returning to this area following retirement. Mrs. Tolson was a member of Lamar United Methodist Church, the Bernie Sue Sunday School Class, and the Sue Stewart Circle of the church. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara T. Stanley of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Leah Herbert of Rochester, Michigan and Michael Stanley of Pinecrest, Fla.; a brother, LaFoye Watford of Lamar; and several nieces and nephews. VAN HOY
Miss Ruth Alice Van Hoy, 71, resident of Salemtowne, the Moravian Retirement Community, died Monday morning at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on July 9, 1928 in Winston-Salem to Nat Wilson Van Hoy and Trula Snyder Van Hoy. She was a graduate of Hanes High School, Salem College, and had a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill. Miss Van Hoy worked for the Forsyth County Welfare Department from 1950 until 1959 and for the Forsyth County Domestic Relations Court from 1961 until 1967. From 1967 until her retirement, she was Administrator of the Forsyth County Detention Home. She was a former President of the Pilot Club and was a life member of several professional organizations, including the N.C. Family Life Council. Surviving are her brother, Wilson a Van Hoy and wife, Jean of Charlotte; her two sisters, Marie Bellin and Trula B. Stylers and husband, L.S. all of Winston-Salem; one niece, Jo Stahle of Asheville; two nephews, Joseph Wilson Styers of Thomasville and Luther Samuel Styers of Wilmington; and two great-nephews and two great-nieces. The funeral service will be at Fairview Moravian Church Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Neil Routh and Rev. Norwood Green. Interment will be in the Moravian Graveyard. WATTS
WILMINGTON -- Vestal Ray Watts, of 4849 College Acres Drive, Wilmington, died Sunday, December 5, 1999 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born on December 11, 1922 in Forsyth County, N.C. the son of the late Charlie Ross and Armittie Kreeger Watts and was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Bridgette Mooney. Mr. Watts was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He was a veteran of the 26th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army and served in Europe in the 3rd Army under General Patton. Mr. Watts retired as Inspector from the U.S. Customs Service. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Regina Griffin Watts of the home; three children, Mrs. Martha Watts Walker and husband, Danny of Wilmington, Mrs. Myra Bennett and husband, Bobby of Lawsonville, N.C., and Mrs. Sheila Mooney and husband, Mitch of Conway, S.C.; five grandchildren, Arielle Walker, Danielle Walker, Lisa Sheppard, Erik Mooney, and Justin Mooney; and three great-grandchildren, Austin Mooney, Hailey Sheppard, and Shane Mooney. He was preceded in death his brothers, Percy Watts, Dalla Watts, Carl Watts, and Kennis Watts and a sister, Allice Tuttle. Mr. Cam Dawson Weatherman, 94, of Whitaker Road, died Monday, December 6, 1999 at Yadkin Nursing Center. He was born June 9, 1905 in Yadkin County to the late Miles Lee and Julia Holcomb Weatherman. Mr. Weatherman was a retired farmer and enjoyed his grandchildren in their activities such as hunting, fishing, and was an avid sports fan. He was preceded in death by a sister, Trula W. Casstevens and three brothers, Elsie Weatherman, Flake Weatherman, and Clyde Weatherman. Surviving is his wife of 68 years, Ethel Winters Weatherman; three children, Thad (Margaret) Weatherman of Boonville, Peggy (David) Huffman of Salisbury, and Patty (the late Cooch) Mathis of Boonville; grandchildren, Julia (Tim) Baity, Jennifer (Jimmy) Shoaf, Kyle Huffman, Cathy (Matt) Recchio, Chris (Barbara) Mathis, Teresa Mathis, Kent Mathis, and Clark Mathis; and great-grandchildren, Shane Collins, India Collins, Adam Mathis, Angela Mathis, Hannah Baity, Caleb Haity, and Kaitlyn Shoaf. Mrs. Ruby Ida Calloway Whitaker, 93, a long-time resident of Winston-Salem Rehabilitation & Heal thcare and formerly of Westchester Road, died Monday at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born July 7, 1906 in Yadkin County to Silas Monroe and Ida Elizabeth Casstevens Calloway. She was retired from SaraLee and was a member of Burkhead United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Ernest Whitaker in 1981; a daughter, Colleen Van Horn in 1996; three sisters, Della Holcomb, Ethel Longworth, and Hazel Thomason; and four brothers, Thomas, Bill, Rufford, and Albert Calloway. She is survived by one daughter, Jolleen W. Johnson and a son-in-law, Joni (Mrs. Curt) Setzer of Rock Hill, S.C., Philip Van Horn (Karasann) of Pfafftown, and Leslie (Mrs. Robert) Brown of Virginia Beach, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Will and Steven Setzer of Rock Hill, S.C., and Lauren Patton of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Ruth Gregory of Winston-Salem and Dollie Brown of Yadkinville; two brothers, Vance Calloway of Yadkinville and Paul Calloway of Winston-Salem; and one sister-in-law, Flora Calloway. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. at Voglers Reynolda Road Chapel on Tuesday. A private burial will take place at the Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum in Clemmons.

Mrs. Martha Moore Preslar, 80, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Yadkinville, died Sunday, Oct . 31, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Jan . 5, 1919 in Wilkes County, N.C. to Frank and Stella Williams Moore. Mrs. Preslar was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church and a former member of Sans Souci Baptist Church in Greenville, S.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, M. Allen Preslar in 1995. Surviving is one son, Robert Preslar and wife, Rebecca of Cincinnati, Ohio; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Preslar of Toyama, Japan and Katherine Preslar of Sydney, Australia; one special niece, Jane Eskew and husband, Richard of Winston-Salem; and several other nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with funeral services at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Richard Eskew officiating. Ms. Shelron Richardson, departed this life on Oct . 25, 1999 at Hospice Home. She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Mr. Leroy Gus Richardson; one daughter, Shalton Richardson; one son, Danny Derant all the the city; one brother, James (Johnnie Mae) Derant of the city; a devoted mother and friend, Ms. Annie Clavers of the city; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. WALNUT COVE -- Mrs. Barbara Jean Clark Smith, 65, of Walnut Cove, Died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Sunday, Oct . 31, 1999 following a period of declining health. A native of Forsyth County, she was born Oct . 17, 1934 to Noel Hassell and Myrtle Marshall Clark. Mrs. Smith was an active member of Freedom Baptist Church as long as health permitted. She was Secretary Treasurer of the church and also a member of the church choir. Mrs. Smith is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, James Eric and Cindy Holland Smith of Walnut Cove; two granddaughters (Nanna's Girls), Erica Marie and Kaylee Erin Smith both of Walnut Cove; her mother, Myrtle Elizabeth Marshall Clark of Walnut cove; two sisters, linda (Jerry) Beeson of Walnut Cove and Christina (Donald) Shoaf of Arcadia, N.C.; two brothers, Wayne (Nancy) Clark of Fancy Gap, Va. and Darryl (Pat) Clark of Midway, N.C.; also several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Roscoe Smith in 1984. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov . 3, 1999 at Freedom Baptist Church in Rural Hall.
