Mrs. Mildred Stewart Simo, 87, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Simo was born November 7, 1911 in Forsyth County to Charles William and Carrie Mae Morgan Stewart. She was employed with RJR Tob. Co. for fourteen years, Brown-Rogers-Dixon Retail Store for twenty years, and Iveys Dept. Store in Florida for four years. She was a member of Bethabara Moravian Church. Surviving are a sister, Ruth Elizabeth Stewart of Thomasville, N.C.; a brother, Frank E. Stewart of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 28 in the Parklawn Memorial Mausoleum Chapel by Rev. Donald Griffin. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. SIMPSON
MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Lillian Viola Haymore Simpson, 83, of 138 Ridge Road, Mount Airy, widow of Herman Gilbert Simpson, passed away of Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Simpson was born in Surry County on January 17, 1916, daughter of the late William Edgar and Lucy Frances Draughn Haymore. She was retired from Surry County Department of Social Services and was an active member of the Good Neighbor Extension Homemakers Club for over 40 years. Mrs. Simpson was a faithful member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where she had been a member of 66 years. She was a charter member of the Women's Missionary Union in 1951 and had served actively in that group, including serving as president for many years. She was a former choir member, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, and a current member of the Flower Committee and the Brotherly Love Committee. Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Edwards of the home; one sister, Callie Atkins of Mount Airy; three brothers and sister-in-law, Grover and Oleen Haymore of Mount Airy, Sam and Isabelle Haymore of Dobson, and Ellis (Buddy) and Lula Haymore of Dobson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Simpson was preceded in death by one sister, Margie Hiatt. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 28, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Piney Grove Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by Rev. Kermit Gray and Dr. Gerald Hewitt, with burial in the Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 until 9p.m. at the Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes before the service. SMITHERMAN
Mr. Genelia Gray Smitherman, 82, of 2523 Manchester St., passed away on Saturday, October 23, 1999 at the Brian Nursing Center. She was born on April 10, 1917 in Winston-Salem, N.C., the daughter of the late Harrison and Fannie Gray. She was a graduate of Atkins High School, lived in Jersey City and New York and later settled in Winston-Salem. She was employed by R.J. Reynolds and later Taylor Brothers Tobacco Company where she retired in 1985. She was a faithful member of the St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church for 33 years. Genelia was a loyal member of the Missionary Circle for over 30 years. She was Co-Chairman of the Emartus Executive Board Missionary Circle, a member of the Forsyth County Missionary Union, a member of the Dutiful Dozen Savings Club for 20 years, and a member of the Pastor's Aide Committee. She shared her life and love with her late husband, George Smitherman; her eight children, Miriam Glenn (Theodore) of Ft. Washington, Md., Dr. Brenda Cherry (Charles) of Sharon, Massachusetts, George Smitherman, Jr. (Brenda) of Clinton, Md., Sharon Blue of Winston-Salem, Vickie Brown (Robert) of Charlotte, N.C., Tony Smitherman (Sandy) of Greensboro, N.C., Michael Smitherman (deceased) and Kim Backman (Craig) of Winston-Salem; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sisters, the late Christine Wilson (James) and Willie Mae Dunovant; nephews, James Wilson (Olivia) and Harold Ray Dunovant (Mary); nieces, Sherry Wilson Horton and Jerilyn Halle; numerous in-laws; and a host of other relatives and special friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. from the St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Joseph R. Sameuels . Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. WIDENER
Mr. Carl Edward Widener, 73, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999 at his home. He was born March 5, 1926 in Meadowview, Va., to Walker Lynwood and Nannie Marie Thompson Widener. He was a decorated World War II Naval Veteran and a retired painting contractor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Mae Brown Widener. Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Kay Widener of Winston-Salem; three sons, Edward Lee Widener and Stanley Joe Widener of Winston-Salem, and Ronnie Eugene Widener and wife, Heidi Lynne of Richmond, Va., three grandchildren, Ronnie Eugene Widener, Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Christopher Levi Widener, and Jessica Lynn Widener of Richmond; one brother, Everette Eugene Widener Sr.; and a very close and dear friend, Virginia French of Lewisville. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel, Winston-Salem by Pastor Freddie Angles. A military graveside service by Veterans of Foreign Wars District 11 Memorial Honor Guard will follow in Woodland Cemetery. WILLIAMS
Mr. Lawrence Derrick Williams, age 93, a former resident of Sunrise Towers, peacefully departed this life on September 19, 1999. He was born on April 15, 1906 in Williamsburg County, South Carolina, to the late Frances Cameron Williams and Sam Watson Williams. A resident of Winston-Salem for 43 years, Derrick was married to the late Elizan Eaddy Williams. To this union thirteen children were born, with a daughter, Verna Mae and son Jessie Lee preceeding them in death. He formerly served as a Worshipful Master of Good Hope Lodge #376 in Johnsonville, S.C. Mr. Williams was a member of Union Bethel A.M.E. Church and served as an honorary trustee. He was a retired employee of Plemmons and Irvin Produce Company. Cherishing his memories are five sons, Rev. Dr. Henry (Ruby) Williams, Rev. Dr. Hubert (Rev. Lula Mae) Williams, Derrick Williams, Jr., Jacob (Cynthia) Williams, and Alfonza Williams; six daughters, Willie W. Singletary, Alberta W. (Hodges) Brown, Jannie W. Funderburk, Eliza W. Spates, Luvenia R. Williams, and Lillie W. (Jerry) Thornton; a brother, Ashton Williams of the city; three sisters-in-law, Katenna Eaddy of Hemingway, S.C., Angeline Williams of the city, and Rev. Mary Wilson of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother-in-law, Deward Wilson of Philadelphia, Pa.; two exceptional, dedicated grandsons, Levi Singletary, Jr., and Ronald C. Funderburk, Jr.; forty two grandchildren, thirty seven great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, devoted daughters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends; a faithfully devoted daughter-in-law, Ruby Williams. A Homegoing Celebration will be held on Saturday, September 25, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. at Saint James A.M.E. Church with Rev. William Propst, and Rev. E.C. Hughes, officiating, and Rev. Dr. Henry B. Williams as the eulogist. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Family Visitation will be on Friday evening, September 24, 1999, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Russell Funeral Home. WRIGHT
Mr. William John Wright, Jr., 39, of Germanton, N.C., passed away Monday at his residence. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Nora Campbell Wright of Germanton; a brother, Rodney Dean Wright of Groveland, California; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Stella Jones of Fries. The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Rev. Fred Jenning and Rev. Bobby Myers officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. JOHNSON
CARY, N.C. -- Dr. Richard L. Johnson, 74, of Cary and formerly of Kenmore, New York, died at his home on April 22, 1999 after a lingering illness. He was born April 12, 1925 in Hornell, New York, the son of the late Henry Michael and Agnes Conway Johnson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Philip Conway Johnson and a daughter, Molly Ann Johnson. He was a native of New York State his entire life until 1996 when he relocated to North Carolina along with his wife of 46 years, Irene. Dr. Johnson was a veteran of WWII. In 1945 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Army Air Corp. Following WWII, he attended Canisius College and the University of Buffalo Dental School, graduating in 1951. He completed his residency in the field of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery at Millard Fillmore Hospital, and practiced from 1954 until his retirement in 1986. He served for a period of time as Chairman of The Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery Department at both DeGraff Memorial Hospital and Millard Fillmore Hospital-Gates Circle. Dr. Johnson also served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery at the University of Buffalo. His hononary memberships included: Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Fellow-American College of Dentists, Fellow-International College of Dentists, Fellow-American College of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeons, and Founder of the Western New York affiliate of the American College of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery. Survivors include his wife, Irene Kelly Johnson; two sons, Dr. Peter C. (Karen) Johnson of Wexford, Pa., and Patrick L. (Anna Marie) Johnson of East Amherst, N.Y.; five daughters, Mary K. Johnson of Kenmore, N.Y., Monica L. Sleap (Richard) of Winston-Salem, Margaret E. Fleming (Carey) of Apex, N.C., Madonna S. Johnson of Durham, and M. Kelly Jacobius (David) of Pfafftown; eleven grandchildren: Jennifer and Katherine Sleap, Christopher and Kevin Johnson, Caroline, Thomas, and Elizabeth Johnson, Brian and Brittany Fleming, and Allie and Joshua Jacobius; two sisters-in-law, Eileen M. Johnson of Yorktown Heights, N.Y. and Mary Isabel Quittenton of Rochester, N.Y; also surviving are five nephews and one niece. Arrangements are being made by Dengler Funeral Home, Rolling Chapel, 3000 Delaware Avenue, Kenmore, New York 14223. The family will accept visitors on Sunday, April 25, 1999 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be Monday, April 26, 1999 at St. Ann's in Hornell, New York with burial following at St. Mary's cemetery in Rexville, New York. KING -- Ruby ''Pat'' Sprinkle McGee, 69, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Winston-Salem, July 22, 1929, to Waldo and Ruby Sprinkle. A graduate of Hanes High School, Mrs. McGee was retired from King Elementary School after 29 years of faithful service. She was a member of First Baptist Church in King. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tim McGee, a son, Victor Craig McGee, a sister, Mary Ann Hertweck, and a brother, Bill Sprinkle. Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Smith and husband, Rickie, of King; two sons, Marvin Tuttle and his wife, Kay, of King, and Tom McGee and wife, Joan, of Columbia, S.C.; 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; one sister, Frances Trivette Helsabeck of Winston-Salem; a special sister-in-law, Betty Pulliam of King, and a special mother-in-law, Nannie McGee of King. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 23, 1999, at the First Baptist Church in King. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Mr. Gurnie Payton McCollum, 88, of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999 at The Oaks at Forsyth. He was born December 17, 1910 in Surry County to the late Lee and Mary Jane Owen McCollum. Mr. McCollum was owner of Mac's Sales and Service, Inc. for over 30 years. He was a member and Elder of First Christion Church, Winston-Salem. He was also a member of the Winston-Salem Rose Society. Surviving are his wife, Mary A. McCollum; his daughter, Patti M. Hill of Wilmington, N.C.' his son, Michael P. McCollum of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Payton and Anna Porter McCollum of Winston-Salem, Lauren and John David Hill of Bethel, N.C.; two sisters, Maude Norman of Mt. Airy and Nancy McCreary of Pinnacle; a brother, Byron McCollum of Orangeburg, N.C.; his stepmother, Alma McCollum of Mt. Airy; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 24, 1999 at First Christian Church with Rev. Willie Davis and Rev. Cliff Garris officiating. Mr. McCollum will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. MCLENNAN
Mrs. Margaret Vick McLennan, 89, of 1818 Robinhood Road, wife of the late Dallace McLennan, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Center. She was born June 2, 1909 in Forsyth County to Thomas and Lillie Shouse Vick. Mrs. McLennan was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. She graduated from Reynolds High School and Salem College. Mrs. McLennan taught in the public schools in Winston-Salem. She was a trustee of Salem College, contributed to the restoration of Old Salem, was a docent at Reynolda House, was president of the YWCA, president of the Women's Auxiliary at Centenary United Methodist Church and before her illness was an active member of Forsyth Country Club. In addition to her parents, Mrs. McLennan was preceded in death by her husband Dallace McLennan, a son; Dallace McLennan II; two brothers, Thomas Vick, Jr. and Harold Vick. Survivors include two nephews, Harold Vick, Jr. of Thousand Oaks, Calif. and Brad Vick of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Jane Robinson of Boone, N.C. and Susan Vick of Maynard, Maryland and a special cousin, James Ratcliff of Winston-Salem. A Graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 1999 at Forsyth Memorial Park by Rev. Bill Roth.
