MUMY
ADVANCE -- Lola L. Mumy, 86, of Advance, N.C., formerly of McCune, Kan. and Grove, Okla., died Sunday, April 18, 1999, in the Meadowbrook Terrace Nursing Home in Advance, N.C., after an lengthy illness. She was born December 30, 1912 at Cosby, Mo., the daughter of Henry and Anna Heinz Ladage. She grew up and attended school at Cosby, Mo. before moving to Labette County, Kan. with her family in 1924, where she graduated from Labette County High School at Altamont, Kan. She also attended Parsons Jr. College, now Labette Community College, where she earned her teaching certificate. Lola taught in a one room school for a couple of years in Labette County, Kan. Lola married Floyd E. Mumy, February 22, 1936, at Parsons, Kan., he preceded her in death on October 16, 1993. They lived at Yellville, Ark. a couple of years, also Preston, Mo. for three years, most of their married life was spent at McCune, Kan. They owned and operated the Mumy Real Estate and Insurance Agency for 28 years in McCune, Kan. They lived at McCune for 44 years and then moved to the Honey Creek Retirement Village at Grove, Okla. in 1989. Mrs. Mumy moved to the Meadowbrook Terrace at Advance, N.C. in 1996 to be close to her son, Donald. Mrs. Mumy was active in church activities and taught Sunday School while attending Sherman Baptist Church at Sherman City, Kan. She was a member of the Grand Lake Baptist Church, Grove, Okla. Survivors include one son, Donald W. Mumy of Clemmons, N.C.; one grandson and wife, Graham and Carrie Mumy of Bethel, Okla.; one granddaughter and husband, Sarah and Victor Hawk of Yukon, Okla.; four great grandchildren: Ben, Cate, Rebecca and Brett. Graveside Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Oswego Cemetery, Oswego, Kan. The Rev. Gary Bishop will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of the Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego, Kan. Friends may register at the funeral home at their convenience. The casket will remain closed. The family suggest memorials to their friend's favorite charity.
BROWN
Mrs. Gladys Hemric Snow Brown, 80, of East Bend, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She was born August 31, 1918 in Yadkin County to the late Harrison and Sally Gambill Hemric. Mrs. Brown was retired from Western Electric and was a member of Pfafftown Baptist Church. She had taught Sunday School at Griffin Baptist Church for many years. She was very active in the Pioneer's of America as long as health permitted. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred J. Snow in 1974. She is survived by her husband, Roy Lester Brown of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley (Earl) Bryant of Winston-Salem, Shelbie (C.L.) McKnight of Boonville, and Freddie (Ed) Masencup of Pfafftown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy (Nancy) Snow of Fredersburg, Va., and David (Brenda) Snow of Walkertown; a step son, Lester Vernon Brown of Kernersville; 18 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Phillips of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Elva Reavis of Harmony; three brothers, Ernest Hemric of Elkin, Warren Hemric of Mt. Airy, and Wayne Hemric of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Rev. Craig Bowman. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. ASHEBORO -- Nancy Ellen Auman Caviness, 79, of Arbor Acres, Winston-Salem, N.C., and formerly of Asheboro, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 23, 1999, at Central United Methodist Church, Asheboro with the Rev. Byron Alexander. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery. For the past six years, Mrs. Caviness has lived at Arbor Acres (Triad United Methodist Home) in Winston-Salem. A member of the Central United Methodist Church in Asheboro, she was the widow of A. Fields Caviness who died in 1982, and was predeceased by a brother, M.C. Auman, Jr. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Forrester Caviness and Jane Shearin Caviness of Newark, Del.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Caviness Brantley and Joe Brantley of Greensboro, N.C., and Patricia Caviness Weekley and Phil Weekley of High Point, N.C.; a granddaughter, Dr. Kristen Caviness Sihler of Iowa City, Iowa; a grandson, Benjamin Wayne Daughtridge of Greensboro, N.C.; two brothers, Forrester C. Auman of Hendersonville, N.C., and Rev. James A. Auman of Greensboro, N.C.; and a sister, Ruth Auman McKenzie of Seagrove, N.C. LAKELAND, Fla. -- Mr. Fred F. Church, 69, of Lakeland , Fla., formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C., died April 19, 1999. Mr. Church was an active participant in the growth and vitality of Tampa, having served many years in the Rotary Club, Tampa Chamber of Commerce and the Committee of 100. He along with Park Wright, Chester Ferguson and George Gage were responsible for the re-development of downtown Tampa and the Franklin Street Mall. He graduated from Guilford College with a degree in Economics. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Mr. Church began his banking career in St. Petersburg where he was a bank examiner with the Federal Home Loan Bank. He then joined First Federal Saving & Loan of Tampa where he held positions as branch manager, personnel manager, data processing manager, Treasurer, Vice President and in 1966 he became President. Mr. Church had many hobbies and interests including raising and showing dogs. He was one of the founders and President of the Tampa Bay Kennel Club. He was also interested in horticulture, tree farming, painting, and sports. He enjoyed baseball, basketball, volley ball and tennis. He was an avid reader, student of history and loved music. He is survived by his brother, Richard Church of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Carolyn McKinnon of Atlanta, Ga. and Eleanor Jones of Winston-Salem; his wife of 20 years, Joan Church of Lakeland; her children, Lisa, Melaney and Kim and her grandchildren Katie, Haley, Mathew, Christian, Colin and Calvin; his ex-wife, Martha Jo Lanier of Richmond and son, Fred Church III of Seminole and grandchildren: Camille, Ian and Kayla; a daughter, Stacy Warren of Boston and grandchildren: Sam and Jane; ex-wife, Barbara Culbreath and her children: Missy, Lindsey, Amanda and their children. A private ceremony for the family only will take place at Heath Funeral Mome in Lakeland on Friday, April 23, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow at Ms. Church's home.
CRATER
HAMPTONVILLE -- Thomas Jay Crater, 71, beloved husband and father, of 5601 Crater Road, Hamptonville, left his earthly home to be with his heavenly Father at 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 1999. Born in Yadkin County on May 27, 1927, he was the son of the late Jay and Dora Nicholson Crater. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. On September 15, 1951, he married the former Jean Shore, who survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Crater is survived by a son, Thomas Daniel (Leslie) Crater of Wilson, N.C.; two daughters, Sandra Jean (Angelo) LaGrega of Greensboro and Elizabeth Ann (Ronnie) Groce of Jonesville; four grandchildren: Drake Groce, Katelyn LaGrega, Thomas LaGrega, and Caroline Victoria Crater; a brother, Rev. Paul Crater of Union Grove, and a sister, Esther Hedgecock of Randleman, N.C. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gus, Gene and Ralph Crater. Funeral services for Mr. Crater will be held on Friday, April 23, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Crater and Rev. Arlene Stone officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, April 22, from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Mackie-Gentry Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence on Crater Road, Hamptonville. HARMONY -- Rex Leland Davis, 65, of Raven Rd., passed away Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mr. Davis was born June 23, 1933 in Yadkin County to the late John Leland and Mazzie (Davis) Davis. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Madalyn Swisher Davis; six sons, Sonny Davis, Rocky Davis and Terry Davis, all of Yadkinville, N.C., Rodney Davis, Dwight Davis and Rex Sterling Davis, all of Harmony, N.C.; three grandchildren, Sunni Lynn Davis of Yadkinville, N.C., Christy Maria Davis and Ryan Eugene Davis, both of Harmony, N.C.; one brother, Royse Davis of Boonville, N.C.; one sister, Jettie Phillips of Jonesville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Davis was a member of Church of Christ and was self employed as owner of R&D Motors in Harmony, N.C. KING -- Mr. Davie ''Pop'' Davis, 87, of 286 Main Street, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Village Care of King. Mr. Davis was born on April 12, 1912 in Carroll County, Virginia to John and Martha Smith Davis. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie Mae Hancock Davis, his parents, a brother and four sisters. He was a retired logger and a member of East Side Baptist Church in Mooresville. Surviving are three daughters, Rose (Roger) Eaton of Tobaccoville, Mary (Junior) Griffin of Mooresville, and Jane (Manuel) Puckett of Pine Ridge, N.C.; seven sons, Howard (Margaret) Davis of Mt. Airy, Junior Davis of King, Roger Davis and Danny Davis, both of Tobaccoville, Frank (Judy) Davis of Mt. Airy, Roy Davis of Sauratown Mountain, and Billy Davis of King; 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. John Claude Felts, 71, of 5900 Belews Creek Rd., Walkertown died Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at his home. Mr. Felts was born in Wilkes Co. the son of James Harrison and Myrtle Pruitt Felts. He was a retired farmer and a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Frances Wagoner Felts of the home; three sons and their wives, Donald Lee and Regina Felts of Iron Station, James ''Jimmy'' Noah and Elizabeth Felts of Walkertown and John Gary and Charlene Felts of King; three daughters, Frances Louise Johnson of Winston-Salem, Myrtle Christine McBride and her husband RJ of Belews Creek, and Sandra F. Collar and her husband Robert of Belews Creek; two brothers and their wives, Bill and Margaret Felts of Archdale and David and Nellie Felts of State Road; one sister and her husband, Estelle and Neece Seagraves of Winston-Salem. MOCKSVILLE -- Mrs. Naomi Catherine West Frye, 82, of Hwy 601 South, departed this earthly life to be with her Lord, Tuesday, April 20, 1999. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Polly Chamberlin West. Survivors include her husband, Lester Eugene Frye of the home; one sister, Mrs. Jack (Cordie) Trivette of Mocksville; seven daughters, Mrs. Nellie Couch, wife of the late Edgar Couch, Mrs. Tommy (Annie) Call, Mrs. Boyd (Betty) Trivette, Mrs. Joe (Ruth) Smith, Mrs. Linda Gaither, wife of the late Hugh Gaither, Mrs. Bobby (Sue) Caudle, and Ms. Bonnie Catherine Frye, all from Mocksville; four sons, Johnny and Dee Frye, Calvin and Melinda Frye, of Mocksville, Robert Lewis Frye of Woodleaf and Roger Dale Frye of Salisbury. She is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and twelve great-great-grandchildren. RONDA -- Mr. William Shadric (Bill) Huff, 79, of 171 Maple Street, Ronda, passed away at 2 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mr. Huff was born July 24, 1919, in Forsyth County to the late Calvin and Myrtle Bell Huff. He was retired from Huff Tire Recapping in Statesville. He served in the United States Army during World War. He was a member of North Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Boonville. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were a sister, Kathleen Vestal and a brother, Ralph Huff. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Waddell Huff of the home; a step-daughter, Tommy (Clarence) Curry of Winston-Salem; a son, Barry Dean Huff of Winston-Salem; a stepson, James Ronald Jenkins of Traphill; a grandson, Michael Huff; three step-grandchildren, Rodney Jenkins, James Curry and Teresa Myers; one brother, Jack (Maude) Huff of Statesville; and several nieces and nephews.
