COLLINS
WALNUT COVE -- Mrs. Shirley Jean Tilley Mabe Collins, 61, died Thursday, September 2, 1999 at her home. She was born in Stokes County to William Thomas Tilley and Mamie Ludie Lawson Tilley Lawson. She was a homemaker and member of Shining Light Baptist Church. Preceding her in death were two husbands, Raymond O. Mabe and Isaac P. Collins, Jr., one daughter, Rita Faye Mabe; one granddaughter, Chelsey Gwen Ziglar; and one step-grandson, Garry Wayne Inman. Surviving are three daughters, Wanda King, Ramona East and husband, Mike, and Rosanne Inman and husband, Wayne all of Walnut Cove; five sisters and two brothers, Ersie Goins, Hazel Medley, and Fred Tilley all of Lawsonville, Annie Mae Bullins and Pattie Sorrell both of Stokesdale, Brenda Cheek of Asheboro, and Sanford Tilley of Bassett, Virginia; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held Saturday, September 4, 1999 at Shining Light Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery. Rev. Jack Anderson and Rev. Randy Wall will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home of Ramona and Mike East.

CREESON
Mr. Calvin Carl Creeson, 74, of 4719 Jenkins Road, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 1, 1999. Mr. Creeson had been in ill health a short time before he passed away at his home. Mr. Creeson was born in Vienna Township, Forsyth County, on July 9, 1925, to James Everett Benton Creeson and Ella Freeman Creeson. He was of the Baptist fatih. Mr. Creeson graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1942. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943. During the Korean Conflict, he was one of the 406 Infantrymen of the First Battalion Infantry Regiment, Task Force Smith, that landed in Pusan, Korea of July 1, 1950. He was captured on July 5, 1950 and was a prisoner of war until 1953. When Mr. Creeson was captured he put a sign up in his hut that read: ''Be strong and of good courage. Be not afraid, neither be thou dis mayed, for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.'' That is where his faith and determination came from. During World War II he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. Mr. Creeson went to the United States Army Provost Marshall General School to become a Criminal Investigator in 1954. In his last years of service he was stationed in Hanaw, Germany as a C.I.D. Investigator and retired as such in 1965. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite. He was the commander and founder of Post 16, American Legion, located in Friedberg, Germany. He returned to Winston-Salem in 1984. He worked in the Security Business for several years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bridgette G. Creeson of the home; two daughters, Sabrina Deborah Edwards and husband, Chop and Candieth Lois Welch; two sons, Keith Everett Creeson and Calvin Carl Creeson, Jr.; four grandchildren, Brandon and Cameron Edwards, Gregory Allen Creeson, and Jason Christopher Welch; one great-grandson, Cameron Eugene Welch. Mr. Creeson is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Rd. Chapel on Saturday, September 4, 1999 at 11:00 a.m., conducted by Ralph Sproles, Minister. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home. Interment will be in Crestview Memorial Park with military rites by the King American Legion Post 289. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth, 1100-C, S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103. The family wishes to express special thanks to all those who gave love and support through a most difficult time.

CUMMINS
WEST CHESTER, Ohio -- Mr. Joel K. Cummins, 39, of 5483 Fawnview Ct., West Chester, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 1999 at his home. He was born February 24, 1960 in Covington, Ky. to the late Chester and Rosa Case Cummins. Mr. Cummins was the Project Leader for Production at General Electric Aircraft in Evandale, Ohio. He was a member and Sunday school teacher at Rolling Hills Baptist Church in West Chester, a 1978 graduate of Bracken County High School, and in 1982 he received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Eastern Kentucky University. Surviving are his wife, Joellen Moran Cummins and two daughters, Mallory and Bethany Cummins all of the home; two brothers, Steve Cummins of Lexington, Ky. and Barry Cummins of Charlotte, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 4, 1999 at Moore & Parker Funeral Home in Brooksville, Ky. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Shorten & Ryan Funeral Home, 8791 Cincinnati Dayton Road, West Chester, Ohio and Saturday from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at Moore & Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville, Ky. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery, Brooksville, Ky. Memorials may be made to the Asthma Foundation.

DICKSON
Mr. Roy Jackson Dickson, 75, of 4963 Stonington Rd., died at his home Tuesday. He was born on May 12, 1924, in Clover, S.C. to Marcus Raymond and Mamie Jackson Dickson. Mr. Dickson served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following a brief career in Radio and T.V. Repairs, he went to work for Western Electric Co., retiring in 1983 following thirty-two years of service. Until his health prevented, Mr. Dickson was an active Ham Radio Operator. He was a member of Winston-Salem Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret Caraway Dickson; by a brother, Lewis Dickson; and a sister, Nell Dickson. He is survived by a brother, Raymond S. Dickson and his wife, Elizabeth K. Dickson of Greensboro; a sister, Vergie L. Dickson of Clover, S.C.; and two brothers-in-law, George Caraway of Martinsville, Va. and John Caraway of Taylors, S.C. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at Forsyth Memorial Park, conducted by Rev. J. Marion Rector. The family will receive friends at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Rd. Chapel Thursday from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 1900 S. Hawthorne Rd., Forsyth Medical Park, Suite #622, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103-3901.

FRANKLIN
LEWISVILLE -- Mrs. Grace Mae Joyner Franklin, 86, of Lewisville, died Wednesday, September 1, 1999 at Springwood Care in Winston-Salem. She was born in Yadkin County of February 23, 1913 to Frank S. and Lela Beane Joyner. Mrs. Franklin was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and one sister. Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Daniel Boone Franklin of the home; two daughters, Joyce (Tommy) Isget and Judy (Larry) Layell both of Lewisville; two sister, Mozell Disher of Yadkinville and Margaret Fowler of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted Saturday, September 4, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by Rev. Ronnie Comer, Rev. William Hutchens, and Rev. Robert Taylor. The body will lie instate from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.

GEARREN
Doris Lillian Holder Gearren, born May 20, 1928, went peacefully home to her Lord at 10:00 a.m., September 2, 1999. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gene Gearren and her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and William Gunter who both serve as ministers in Richmond, Va. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Moore of Rural Hall and her brother, Joe Holder of Clemmons. She is preceded in death by her son, Steve Gearren (May 9, 1970), her parents, Robah and Tulie Holder and one brother and sister, Robah Holder and Betty Lou Morgan. The family will be receiving friends at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway form 6:00-8:00 on Friday, September 3, 1999. Doris' HomeGoing Celebration Service will be held 2:00 Saturday at First Baptist Church, Clemmons, N.C. and followed by a brief graveside memorial in the church cemetery. The service will be officiated by her son-in-law, Dr. William Gunter and Rev. Claxton Hall. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be offered in Praise and Honor of God and giving to Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse Ministry, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C. 28607 or First Baptist Church, Clemmons, N.C.

MARSHALL
WESTFIELD -- Mr. Jesse Calvin Marshall, 73, of Route 1, Westfield, N.C., died Wednesday, September 1, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C. after an extended illness. Mr. Marshall was born in Stokes County May 1, 1926 to Gid and Mattie Boles Marshall. He was a life long farmer in the Old Orchard Community and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Marshall was a much beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Edith Shelton Marshall of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Ronnie Bennett of Pinnacle and Deborah and Andrew Smith, Westfield; one son, Jeffrey B. Marshall of Westfield; three grandchildren and their spouses, Pamela B. and Gary Gibson, Pinnacle, Tara E. Bennett of Winston-Salem, and Scott and Tina Bennett of Pilot Mountain; two great-grandchildren, Keerstin and Landon Bennett; and one sister, Hester (Tincy) Hamm of Westfield. Mr. Marshall was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, W.V. (Dock) Marshall. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 4, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Stoney Ridge Baptist Church by Rev. Johnny Enloe and Rev. Mike Sands. Burial will be at Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. Marshall will lie instate at Stoney Ridge Baptist Church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home on Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and other times at the Marshall home.

MARSHALL
Mr. John Carlus Marshall, 69, of 6907 Baux Mountain Road, died Wednesday, September 1, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center after several years of declining health. Mr. Marshall was born in Germanton, N.c. of October 18, 1929 to Thomas C. and Fannie Perrell Marshall. He lived all of his life in the Baux Mountain Community and was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. He graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1949. A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Marshall retired from R.J. Reynolds Industries after 36 years of service. He was a member of the 66 Senior Citizens Club. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Sharon M. Vernon. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Lucille Taylor Marshall of the home; a son, Gary Wayne Marshall and wife, Mary Beth of Clemmons; a grandson, Jonathan Clay Marshall; one loving brother, A. Carl Marshall and wife, Mattie; one loving sister, Carolyn Jones and husband, Charles S. Jones; one niece, Cathy Marshall; one nephew, Christopher Jones; and a son-in-law, Ronnie T. Vernon. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel by Rev. Charles Sparks and Rev. Douglas Butler. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

MURPHY
Mr. Robert Hill ''Bill'' Murphy, Jr., 73, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, September 2, 1999 at his home. Mr. Murphy was born on August 22, 1926 in Stokes County a son of the late Robert H. Sr. and Alma Shelton Murph. He was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church, a retired employee of Southern Railroad Co., a U.S. Marine Veteran, a member of the V.F.W. Post 6367, a member of the Salem Masonic Lodge, a member of the Scottish Rite and Shriners, and a former Scout Master of Troop 781. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Page Murphy of the home; two daughters and one son-in-law, Rita M. Burrow (Steve) of High Point, Susan M. Mansfield of Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; one son, Lonnie Murphy of King; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leon Murphy of Arcadia and James Murphy of Westfield; four sisters, Lois M. Seymore of Winston-Salem, Pauline M. Webb of King, Betty M. Hutchins of Lexington, and Ruth M. Mitchell of Texas. A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 1999 at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with Military Rites provided by the District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday at Foster Funeral Home. The family respectfully requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Forsyth Co., 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103. (FOSTER)

SHELF
Mr. Coy Senior Shelf, of 3728 Chickamauga Drive, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, August 29, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was a native and life long resident of Winston-Salem, N.C. and attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public schools graduating from Carver High School. He attended Winston-Salem State University (formerly Winston-Salem Teachers College) and was a retiree from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Mr. Shelf was a member of the Camel City Elks Lodge #1021. He is survived by his wife of the home Ramel Shelf; one daughter, Nadine Shelf of New York, N.Y.; three sons, Michael (Sonia) Shelf of Marietta, Ga., Claig Shelf of Lewisville, N.C., and Dino Shelf of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Elnora Bradford of Fayetteville, N.C. and Maggie Allen of Winston-Salem; one brother, Givens (Estelle) Shelf of Winston-Salem; and several other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 4, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. from the Hooper Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Reginald Smoot officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the funeral home. (HOOPER)
