DAVIS
ADVANCE -- Mr. William Reid Davis, 65, of N.C. Hwy 801 S. died early Wednesday morning at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in Marshall Baptist Church with Rev. Rusty Morrison officiating. Burial with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by the Advance Masonic Lodge will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. They request memorials be considered for a charity of the donors choice. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Members of the Masonic Lodge will serve as Pall Bearers. Mr. Davis was born in Toledo, Ohio, April 13, 1934 to the late Fred Reid and Ida Ballinger Davis and was retired from the maintenance department of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with thirty-five years of service. He was a member and 32nd Degree Mason at the Advance Masonic Lodge. Mr. Davis was a member of Fork Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruth Myers Davis in 1989 and also by a step brother Rex Human. Surviving are his wife Helen Bailey Davis of the home; his son, Bernie Davis of Advance; his daughter Kristi Manuel of Pilot Mountain; a step son Don Bailey of Advance; one grandson Conrad Davis Manuel, and one sister Clerissia Moran of Winston-Salem.
DRUMMOND
On September 25, 1999, the Lord called Mrs. Berta Lilly Drummond home to be with him. She was born on September 14, 1912 to the late Jim and Florence Baldwin Lilly in Troy, North Carolina. She attended school in Troy, North Carolina and was a retired employee of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company. Early in life, she joined Mount Zion Baptist Church where she was a member of the Elizabeth Missionary Group and a member of the Friendly Neighborhood Club. She loved her church and derived much joy from being in various church services. Mrs. Drummond was preceded in death by her husband, William S. Drummond. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 2, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. from the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Church, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service (12:30-1:00 p.m.) at the church. She leaves to mourn one sister, Ms. Alma Lilly of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three nieces, Henrietta Tillery of Detroit, Mich., Johnnie Mae Sidney of Philadelphia, Pa.; a special devoted niece, Julia Blaylock of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five great nieces; eight great nephews; a devoted friend and caregiver, Calvin Hunter and a host of other relatives and friends. The family may be contacted and the cortege will assemble and leave from the residence 1040 E. Brookline St. Saturday at 12 noon. (HOOPER)

Mr. Arthur Daniel Gray, Sr., 83, passed away on Saturday, September 25, 1999 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Health Center. Survivors include nine children, Sylvia Rooks of Atlantic City, N.J., Clayton Davis of Folcroft, Pa., twins, Arthur Gray III of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Audrey Robinson of Pleasantville, N.J., Marsha Rooks of Atlantic City, N.J., Cheryl Wiggins of Atlanta, Ga., Norman (Big D.) Saunders of Atlantic City, N.J., Herbert Saunders of Atlantic City, N.J., and Sharon Saunders of Pleasantville, N.J.; long time companion, Mary Saunders of Danville, Va.; a nephew, Charles Tanner of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a niece, Norma Tanner Smith; a great-niece, Natasha of Winston-Salem; grandchildren; great and great-great-grandchildren; two sons-in-law; and many devoted relatives and friends including Marlene Alexander, his final care provider. Funeral services will be conducted at Russell's Funeral Home on Thursday, September 30, 1999 at 12:00 p.m. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. GRIFFIN
Mrs. Jeanette Crawford Griffin was born to Gilbert and Lessie Crawford in Chesterfield County, South Carolina on March 16, 1922. She left South Carolina at an early age and lived most of her life in North Carolina. She attended public schools in Durham, North Carolina before settling in Winston-Salem where she met the love of her life, William Andrew Griffin. William and Jeanette were reunited in heaven with the passing of Jeanette on September 24, 1999. She was a faithful and supportive member of First Baptist Church, although she was not able to attend regularly in recent years due to declining health. Mrs. Griffin retired from Medical Park Hospital after 30 years of service in local hospitals. Left to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, William and Loreen Griffin of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a daughter, Phyllis Griffin Walker of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; a daughter and son-in-law, Charles and Deve' Griffin Davis also of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends including devoted neighbors, James and Alice Cason. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, September 30, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. from the First Baptist Church with Reverend Wendell A. Johnson officiating. YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Evelyn Cook Groce, 87, of 4200 Wyo Road, Yadkinville, died Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born August 12, 1912 to the late Robert Lee and Vertie Anderson Cook. She was a retired dairy farmer and grocery store operator. She was a faithful member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, was an avid gardener and lover of flowers and enjoyed quilting. She had much concern for and loved her friends and family. Mrs. Groce was a member of Yadkin County Homemakers Extension. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest E. Groce; a granddaughter, Teresa Luann Groce; two sisters, Lottie Bracken and Effie Joyner; and two brothers, Edgar and Jim Cook. Surviving are her son, Elmer (Lillian A.) Groce of 4141 Wyo Road, Yadkinville; six sisters, Coleen Parker of Courtney, Rachel Barnard of Hamptonville, Margaret McCaskill of Charlotte, Cleo Steelman of Statesville, Martha Osterhout of Charlotte, and Mary Lee Adams of Charlotte; two brothers, Charles F. Cook of Advance and Robert Cook of Mocksville; one grandson, Tim Groce of Yadkinville; and a very special niece, Ruth Sidbury of Jacksonville, Fla. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, September 29, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mt. Olive United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 28, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at Mackie-Gentry Funeral Home, Yadkinville.
HOISINGTON
KING -- Elsie Hauser Hoisington, 95, of Springwood Care Center in Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, September 28, 1999 after being in declining health for many years. She was born January 22, 1904 in Stokes County to John Henry and Martha Mickey Hauser. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph W. Hoisington; two sisters, Opal Davis and Nora Meadows; two brothers, Oscar and Henry Hauser. Surviving are one sister-in-law, Edith Hauser of King and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 7 p.m. at Slate Funeral Home in King. Bro. Johnny Bowen and Bro. Paul Spainhour will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the Oaklawn Memorial Gardens in Winston-Salem.

KERNERSVILLE -- Marie Hale Shields, 69, died Monday September 27, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born in Halifax County March 1, 1939 the daughter of James S. and Cora Jarrell Hale. She is survived by her son Kelly L. Shields of Forest Park, Ga.; sisters, Thelma Yokeley of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Mary Taylor of Kernersville, N.C.; a brother Wesley Hale of Winston-Salem, N.C. Funeral services will be private. Mrs. Joyce Lonsford Speaks, 90, of Winston-Salem, passed away September 28, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 27, 1909 in Wilkes County to Ransom Boyden Lonsford and Laura Prevette Lonsford. Mrs. Speaks was retired from R.J. Reynolds after 53 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. James J. Speaks of Winston-Salem, a daughter, Shirley Speaks Love of Winston-Salem, and her parents. Surviving are her granddaughter, Sharan Hampton of Winston-Salem; a great grandson, Michael Hampton of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Jimmy R. Love; four sisters, Margie L. Faris of Kernersville, Sue L. Nichols of Hiddenite, Doris L. Tesh of Clemmons and Katie L. Phillips of Winston-Salem; one brother, Robert Hugh Lonsford of Baltimore, Md. A funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Charles H. Whitaker Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. TEGA
Peter V. Tega, Sr. 79, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Massapequa, N.Y. passed away at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y. He was born in Italy on Dec. 5, 1919 son of the late Paul & Marianne (Alicandro) Tega. Peter was a retired Claims Rep. for Allstate Ins. Co. He was a veteran of WW2 serving in Luzone, new Guinea, & the Southern Philippines. He was separated as a Sgt. in 1945. He was a member of & Past Commander of VFW Post #7277 in Massapequa, N.Y. and a Life Member of VFW Post #9010 in Clemmons, N.C. He was also a member of the Sons of Italy, a member of the Winston-Salem Booster Club for the Minor League Baseball teams in Winston-Salem and the St. Leo's Sr. Club. Surviving are his wife, Eleanor (Grandinetti) Tega, a son, Peter Tega, Jr. & his wife Joan of West Babylon, N.Y.; two daughters, Tina Dombroski & her husband David of Greenville, N.Y., Donner Soper & her husband Ronald of Sprakers, N.Y.; also 6 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and a brother Ronald Tega of Ashland, Miss. Funeral Service will be Sunday, 8:30 p.m. from the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville, N.Y. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Interment will be in Saratoga National Cemetery on Monday 11 a.m.
WATKINS
Mr. Russell J. Watkins, 96, of Ooltewah, Tenn., formerly a long-time resident of Winston Summit Apartments, died Tuesday evening, September 28, 1999. A native of North Wilkesboro, N.C., he spent most of his life in the Winston-Salem area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was retired from Hanes Knitting Mill, (now known as Sara Lee Knitting) in Winston-Salem with forty-one years of service. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Winston-Salem. He has spent the last three years of his life in Ooltewah, Tenn. with his daughter. Mr. Watkins was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Georgie Butner Watkins, and one son, James Lester Watkins of Mt. Airy, N.C. Survivors include his daughter, Annie Mae Watkins Tripp of Ooltewah; one son, Harold Gray Watkins of Winston-Salem; one brother-in-law, Roy E. Butner of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 2, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery in Tobaccoville with Rev. J. Marion Rector officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, October 1, 1999 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.
