GOODWIN
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Florence Marie Huaid Goodwin, 76, of 9020 Deer Hill Rd., Belews Creek, died Thursday, October 28, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Lawrence, Mass. on July 5, 1923, a daughter of Alfred and Marie Durmont Huaid. She was a homemaker. She was a volunteer at the Shepherd's Center and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Curtice W. Goodwin of the home; a daughter, Nancy Davis of Randleman; three sons, David W. Goodwin of Minneapolis, Minn., Barry E. Goodwin of Winston-Salem, and Mark Goodwin of Hickory; four granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral Mass will be conducted Sunday, November 7, 1999, 7:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church by Father Joseph Tustin. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. CLEMMONS -- Mr. John Roy Hire, Sr. 77, of Clemmons, died Tuesday, November 2, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 4, 1922 in Forsyth County to Sidney Monroe and Sally Frances Brandon Hire. Mr. Hire was a member of Boyers' Chapel Church of Christ and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 36 years of service. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Frances Gentry in 1998; one grandson, Luke Akers; two brothers, Frank Hire and Bill Hire; and one sister, Pauline Holder. Surviving is his wife of 52 years, Nellie Calcutt Hire of the home; two sons, John R. Hire, Jr. and wife, Madeline of Clemmons and G. Jeffrey Hire and wife, Melissa of Clemmons; one daughter, Becky Akers and husband, Don of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Amy Ramey, Tonya Akers, and Andrew Hire; one great-grandchild, Matthew Ramey; and one sister, Fleata Craver of Clemmons. A graveside service will be held Friday, November 5, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons with Mr. Carl Rothrock officiating. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. HOLCOMB
GREENSBORO -- Larry Neil Holcomb, 58, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel, 5926 W. Friendly Avenue. Mr. Holcomb, a native of Forsyth county was the son of the late Cecil B. and Esther Marie Franklin Holcomb. Along with his wife, Nancy Snow Holcomb, he owned and operated Toys & Co. at Friendly Shopping Center. Mr. Holcomb gradated from Wake Forest University in 1964 and was an avid golfer. Surviving in addition to his wife, Nancy are his sons, Neil Holcomb, Jr. of Seattle, Washington and Marc Holcomb of Greensboro and four grandchildren. HYATT
HIGH POINT -- Susie Whitaker Hyatt, 87, of Presbyterian Home, High Point, N.C., died on Thursday morning, November 4, 1999. She was born in Surry Co. on January 9, 1912 to the late Manus A. and Josephine Dinkins Whitaker, in addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman M. Hyatt and a daughter, Louise Hyatt Wood. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Archdale, N.C. and was a retired Beautician. Surviving are one daughter, Carole Hyatt Grassman of Trinity, N.C.; a son, Brent H. Hyatt of Randleman, N.C.; five grandchildren, Angela McDonald, Susan Wood Klingsmith, Joe B. Wood, Jr., Vicky Wood Roach, and Amy Elizabeth Hewett; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Irene W. Johnson of Dobson. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church with burial in the Church Cemetery. Her body will remain at Davis & Son Funeral Home in Dobson until carried to the church to lie instate 30 min. prior to the services. The family will receive friends at Davis & Son Funeral Home on Friday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. the family has requested in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.
LAKE
ARBOR ACRES -- Julian Lake, a resident of Arbor Acres, died at his home early Wednesday morning, November 3, 1999. Dr. Lake was born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 26, 1907. He was the son of Frank Greer and Mary Irene Burr Lake. He had four brothers and two sisters who are all deceased. He graduated from Davidson College in 1928 and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va. in 1931. He studied at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem in 1932, Princeton Theological Seminary in 1955 and the American Summer Institute in St. Andrews, Scotland in 1970 and 1975. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Roberta Gilmour Lake. His children are Julian Gilmour Lake and Elizabeth Lake Orr both of Winston-Salem, Robert Janney Lake (deceased) and Margaret Scott Lake Lindsay of Charlotte. His grandchildren are London Lake Pickett of Winston-Salem, Lydia Sheppard Lake of Arlington, Virginia, Charles Lamb Cauthen, Jr., Elizabeth Gilmour McLean, and Catherine Lake Cauthen of Charlotte, Robert Scott Lake, M.D. of Chicago, Julia Dunham Lake of Lyon, France, David Scott Lindsay, Jr. of Greenville, South Carolina, Sarah Elizabeth Lindsay of Atlanta, and Margaret Lee Lindsay of Charlotte. He has seven great-grandchildren. He was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister on July 21, 1931 in Warrenton, Virginia and received his Doctor of Divinity degree form Davidson College in 1945. He served the Warrenton Presbyterian Church in Warrenton, Virginia from 1931 until 1938, the Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rack Hill, South Carolina from 1938 until 1945, the First Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Tennessee from 1945 until 1949, the First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem from 1949 until 1962, the Brownson Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, North Carolina from 1962 until 1968, and the Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina until his retirement in 1972. Since his retirement, he served seven interim pastorates throughout the southeast. He was a volunteer chaplain at Forsyth Memorial Hospital primarily on the cancer floor during the 1980's and 1990's. He was a life member of the Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club. He organized and was the Chairman of Bristol and the Winston-Salem Preaching Missions which attracted some of the greatest religious speakers of that time to these communities. He had been a member of the Board of Trustees at Davidson College, St. Andrews College, and Union Theological Seminary. He was president of the Arbor Acres Resident Council. There will be a family graveside service on Friday, November 5, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at Forsyth Memorial Park and a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian. Church in Winston-Salem. The family will remain after the service to greet friends at the church. Memorials may be sent to the Julian and Robert Lake Scholarship Fund at Davidson College, Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, the Robert Lake Fund at the First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem or the Mountain Retreat Association in Montreat, North Carolina earmarked for the Robert Lake Park.
LOWERY
Mrs. Maggie Gettys Lowery, 109, formerly of 815 West 24 1/2 Street, passed away on Thursday, November 4, 1999 at the North Carolina Special Care Center, Wilson, North Carolina. She was a native of Rock Hill, S.C., born on September 5, 1890 to Ed and Selena Gettys. She was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church where she served with the Ruth Missionary Group. She was a devoted homemaker and was preceded in passing by her husband, Murray Lowery. She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, one sister-in-law, Carrie Barnett of Winston-Salem, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, November 6, 1999 at 12:00 NOON from the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 NOON on Saturday at the Russell Funeral Home. Mr. Wilbur Miley, Sr., 4226 Mecum Rd. of Walkertown, passed away on November 3, 1999. He was born November 12, 1922. He was a faithful member of Rockhill Baptist Church of Walnut Cove, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Moss Frazier and Arrie Frazier. He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Mrs. Rachel Miley; two sons, Mr. Wilbur Miley, Jr. of the home and Shelley (Carolyn) Miley of Rural Hall, N.C.; three daughters, Ms. Nettie (Wayne) LIttlejohn of Rural Hall, Linda Dozier of Winston-Salem, and Evelyn Transou of Winston-Salem; fourteen grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. He also leaves to mourn three devoted friends, Poncho Davis, Joe Davis, and Henry Dibble and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. CLARK S. Mr. Raymond Fredrick Miller, 96, of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. Mr. Miller was born May 12, 1903 in Forsyth County to Charles and Mary DeGraff Miller. He was a member of Hanes United Methodist Church and retired from RJR Tobacco Co. after 42 years of service. His wife, Ada Young Miller and two children, Sybil Raye Miller and Aubrey E. Miller preceded him in death. Surviving are, one daughter, Charlene Miller McDowell and husband, Thomas; one son, Norman F. ''Buster'' Miller and wife, Ann all of Winston-Salem; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Don Ashe and Rev. Charles Sparks officiating. Burial will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Mrs. Marjorie Gant Moore, 86, formerly of Marguerite Drive, died Wednesday, November 3, 1999 at The Oaks at forsyth. Mrs. Moore was born in Winston-Salem on November 20, 1912 to the late James F. and Elizabeth Harvel Gant. She and her husband, Mr. Reginald G. Moore, were members of Calvary Baptist Church. For several years, she assisted her husband in his profession as a court reporter. Mr. Moore preceded his wife in death in 1992. Surviving are a step-daughter, Mrs. Mary Graham Comeau of El Paso, Texas; a step-son, Dr. Reginald Graham Moore, Jr. of Hickory, N.C.; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Graham, John, and Bradley Moore all of Hickory; and one brother, James F. Gant of Winston-Salem. Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at Forsyth Memorial Park. Rev. Guy Hipp will officiate. KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Alice Brown Nelson, 81, of 205 Dobson Street, Kernersville, died Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 17, 1918 in Guilford County to Curb and Sarah Adams Brown. Mrs. Nelson was a member of First Baptist Church in Kernersville and a member of the ''B'' Friendly Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, D.B. Nelson. Survivors include one son, Danny Nelson and wife, Ann of Oak Ridge; one daughter, Sally Nelson of Brookline, Mass.; two grandchildren, Danielle and Katie Nelson both of Oak Ridge; one sister, Frances Duggins of Kernersville; and two special nieces, Mary Rose Vanhoy and Gaylene Campbell both of Kernersville. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Kernersville by Rev. Thomas C. Brown and Rev. Sam Murphy. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.
