NOLAN
ELKIN -- Mrs. Mary Hazel Phillips Nolan, 93, of 601 Johnson Ridge Road, #125 Parkwood Place, Elkin, died Thursday, November 4, 1999, at Parkwood Place. Mrs. Nolan was born in Ashe County August 20, 1906 to the late James Payton and Minnie Hayes Phillips. Mrs. Nolan attended Appalachian State Teachers College and was a teacher for 40 years. She began teaching in East Bend, but later moved to Jonesville Elementary School where she taught for most of her teaching career. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael F. Nolan; two sisters; and two brothers. Surviving are a sister, Lucille P. Coker of Elkin; a brother, J. Wayne Phillips of Elkin; a sister-in-law, Sara D. Phillips of Mount Airy; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces, and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Jonesville, conducted by Dr. Maxwell Hill. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. to lie instate. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin. NORMAN
MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Maude Eliza McCollum Norman, 86, passed away Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Central continuing Care after an extended illness. Mrs. Norman was born April 26, 1913 in Surry county to Lee and Mary Jane Owen McCollum. Mrs. Norman was retired from Hanes Knitware in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Norman was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joyce Monroe Norman; a sister, Josie McCollum Key; and three brothers, Roy, Gurnie, and Byron McCollum. Surviving Mrs. Norman is a step-son, Kent Norman of Pfafftown; a half-sister, Nancy (Henry) McCreary, and step-mother, Alma McCollum all of Pinnacle. Also surviving is a step-granddaughter, Mandy Norman (Van) Sullivan, and two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services for Mrs. Norman will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. at New Home United Methodist church, Saturday, November 6, 1999 with the Rev. Ben Sheperd and the Rev. Sarah Kalish officiating. The body will lie instate from 10:30 until time for the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorial may be made to Surry/Yadkin Hospice, 1326 N. ROBERTSON
MT. AIRY -- Thelma Frye Robertson, 87, formerly of Mt. Airy, and the widow of J.M. (Peg) Frye, passed away Friday morning at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Thelma had been a very active member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church in the 40's, and for a number of years she was on the staff of the Baptist's Children's Home of North Carolina. Recently she had been residing at the Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. She is survived by one son, James M. Frye of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Mae Arnder of High Point; one brother, M.B. Williamson of Mt. Airy; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive guests at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy on Sunday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service, conducted by Rev. Robert McCrary, will be held at Moody Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 8, 1999 and will be followed by internment at Oakdale Cemetery.

PINE HALL -- Mrs. Pauline S. McCandless Sands, 77, of Route 1, Pine Hall, died Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Britthaven of Madison. She retired from Tultex and was a member of Willow Oak Baptist Church in Walnut Cove. Mrs. Sands was preceded in death by her husband, Noel Sands; a daughter, Nancy Sands Kendrick; brothers, Ray McCandless, Lloyd McCandless; and several step-brothers and sisters. Surviving are one son, Bobby Sands and wife, Carol of Mayodan; three sisters, Ruby M. Manring of High Point, Dorothy M. Griffin of Eden, and Nelda M. Flake of Whitsett; a brother, Harold McCandless of High Point; three grandchildren, Todd Kendrick, Dana Claybrook and husband, Mike, and Allen Sands; one great-grandchild, Cassie Claybrook; and a special friend, Walter Gunn. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 1999 at Willow Oak Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. CARLYLE
MOUNT AIRY -- Beulah Eads Carlyle, 102, of 5178 Siloam Road, Siloam, N.C., passed away on Thursday, November 11, 1999 at the Central Continuing Care of Mt. Airy. Mrs. Carlyle was born in Surry County, N.C. to J. Byrd and Ellen Childress Eads on March 26, 1897. She was a homemaker and member of Union Primitive Baptist Church. She was married to John William Carlyle who died in 1949. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Agnes Carlyle of Siloam; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her children, three sons, Floyd Carlyle, J.E. Carlyle, and Dock Carlyle and two daughters, Connie Carlyle Key and Bessie Lee Murphy. Services will be held on Sunday, November 14, 1999, 2:00 p.m. at the Union Primitive Baptist Church conducted by Elder Willie Branch and Elder Joey Jenkins, with interment to follow at the Pine Hills Friends Meeting. Family will receive friends and family at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home on Saturday, November 13, 1999 from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at the home of Frank and Agnes Carlyle, Siloam, N.C. Cox-Needham funeral Services will be in charge of the arrangements.

GERMANTON -- Mr. Norman H. (Tom) Chapman, 85, of Germanton, died Friday at his residence. He was born September 27, 1914 in Walnut Cove, son of J.S.B. (Ben) and Cornelia White Chapman. He was a former farmer and was associated with A.V. Chapman's Store for more than forty years. He was a lifelong supporter of Palmyra United Methodist Church and a member of the Young at Heart Sunday School Class. On November 29, 1972, he was married to Ila Young Watts, who survives of the home. Also surviving are one step-daughter and her husband, Loretta and Johnny Bowen of King; two step-sons, Hanes Watts and his wife, Betty Jo of Germanton and Richard Watts and wife, Madeline of Walnut Cove; eleven step-grandchildren; fourteen step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Lorraine C. Stout and Mrs. Mae C. Bingham and husband, Nixon all of High Point; and four nieces; and one nephew. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m Sunday in Palmyra United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Danley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove. DALTON
AUGUSTA, GA. -- Worth Davis Dalton, of 355 Berkmans Road, Augusta, Ga., died Friday, October 29, 1999 at University Hospital. He was a native of Winston-Salem (Lewisville, N.C.), graduated Lewisville High School and served one year and one day in the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell, Ky. Mr. Dalton completed Brevard Jr. College in Brevard, North Carolina, he received his B.S. Degree at East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C. in 1951 where he was a member of Phi Sigma Phi Fraternity. He was employed by DuPont de Neumours in Aiken, S.C. in the fall of 1952 as a chemical analyst until he was promoted as supervisor in radiological and chemistry laboratory. After the Dupont contract was canceled he was employed at Westinghouse for approximately five years in the same position. Mr. Dalton was quite active in his church, Trinity-on-the-Hill United Methodist Church and was a member of the ''pioneer'' team of the television ministry and helped with the acoustics during live television broadcasts on local Augusta TV. Mr. Dalton was president of Clark Bible Class, served two years as class secretary, and also taught the Sunday School Classes. He love God, Country, his family, and enjoyed working constantly in his lovely yard. He will indeed be missed by family, friends, and all his relatives, as he was constantly in his quiet demeanor an inspiration to all. Mr. Dalton is survived by his beloved wife, Mrs. Ann Shaw Dalton; daughter, Laura Dalton Smith; four sisters, Virginia Townsend, Ida McHargue, Rosie Burton, and Eleanor Thompson; four brothers, Rev. George, Monroe, Robert, and Frank Dalton; a step-sister, Carol Deaton; two granddaughters, Laura Abigail and Josie Faith Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family received friends on Thursday, (Nov. 4, 1999) at the Poteet Funeral Home West Chapel, Augusta, Ga., where funeral services were held on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. with Dr. Robert Taylor officiating. Pallbearers were Hoke Brantley, Rolly Ahrens, Charley Wylds, Dean Newman, Dr. Toby Warren, Mayor Bob Young, and Dean Smith. GREENSBORO -- Mrs. Hatie Smith Dunlap, 97, of Guilford Care Center, Greensboro, passed away at her residence, November 10, 1999. She was a former resident of Southeast School Road. The Funeral Serviced will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, November 14, 1999 in the Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, Liberty, N.C. by Elder Vance Jones. A Committal Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, at Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church, Walnut Cove by Elder Jones and Rev. Danny Smith. Mrs. Dunlap was a native of Stokes County, but had lived in Guilford and Randolph Counties for many years. Mrs. Dunlap was preceded in death by her husband, George William Dunlap; her parents, Harber and Suzanne Smith; four brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by two children, son, Harvey W. (Red) Dunlap and wife, Ann of Greensboro and daughter, Marie Petty and husband, Don of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Ben and wife, Tina Dunlap of Bear Creek, N.C. and Laurie and husband, David Scotton of Julian, N.C.; three great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Pearl Starbuck and Gladys Hill of Walnut Cove. EAST SPENCER, N.C. -- Johnny Sam Hill, 53, of 914 North Long St., East Spencer, N.C., died suddenly Wednesday, Nov . 10, 1999 at his residence. He was born April 28, 1946 in Rowan Co. to the late Mamie Suanders Hill and the late Matthew J. Hill. Mr. Hill was a graduate of Dunbar High School. He was an employee of Universal Forest Products, owner of Hill's Upholstery, and a member of Mt. Olive Full Gospel Church, Salisbury, N.C. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Sloan Hill of the home; a son, Jonathan Hill of the home; one daughter, Tiffany Boseman of the home; two step-daughters, Tonya Hartman and Stacy Hartman both of Asheville, N.C.; three brothers, Gene Hill of Salisbury, N.C., Luther Hill of Roosevelt, L.I, N.Y., and Rufus Saunders of Estill, S.C.; and two sisters, Frances Sorocki of Salisbury and Patricia Hill of Spencer, N.C. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at A.R. Kelsey Memorial Chapel with the Pastor Frank Smith officiating. Burial will be in Rowan Memorial Park.
