Mr. John ''Eddie'' Mathis, 66, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, September 25, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 22, 1933 in Forsyth County to Roy Edward and Julia Ackerman Mathis. Mr. Mathis was a member of Konnoak Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Teresa Mathis. Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Welch Mathis of the home; two sons, Ricky E. Mathis and wife, Cathy, and Roy Lee Mathis and wife, Debbie, both of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, Donny, Randy, and John Lee Mathis, all of Winston-Salem; one sister, Patricia, ''Patty'' Perryman and husband, Jimmy of Lexington; three brothers, Walter Mathis and wife, Janet of Lexington, Richard K. Mathis and wife, Barbara and Robert R. Mathis and wife, Geneva, both of Winston-Salem; and one brother-in-law, Donald Welch and wife, Carolyn of Florida. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 27, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Ray Hamilton and Dr. Gary McCollough officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. MILLER
Mr. Clayton Carroll Miller, Sr., 68, of Old Salisbury Rd., died September 25, 1999 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salisbury, N.C. He was born July 4, 1931 in Forsyth County to Jasper Arthur and Annie Lori Mitchell Miller. Mr. Miller was a member of Community Fellowship Moravian Church and he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a self-employed auctioneer. A brother, Dr. Hugh Max Miller of Athens, Ga. and his parents, preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Lopez Miller; one daughter, Anna Smith and her husband, Joey; one son, Clayton C. Miller, Jr. and his wife, Julie, all of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Zachary and Clayton Miller, III; three sisters, Mervin Ann Griffith of Wilmington, Martha Bergland of Watertown, Minn., and Ellen Lynn Miller of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at Parklawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Jack Nance and Father Joseph Madden officiating. NORMAN
Mr. Leo Cecil Norman, 86, of 304 Norman Road, Winston-Salem, died Sunday, September 26, 1999 at the Brian Center. Mr. Norman was born February 21, 1913 in Forsyth Co. to Lucius Calvin and Cora Livengood Norman. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at Vogler and Sons, Reynolda Road Chapel by Rev. Susan Vicker. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Norman lived all of his life in Forsyth Co. He was a retired Dairy Farmer and a member of Woodmen of the World. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mr. Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ora Robertson Norman; and a son, Jerry Norman. Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia McGlamery and husband, John and Jeannette Edwards and husband, Curtis, all of Winston-Salem; two sons, Lindsey Norman of Pfafftown and Benny Norman and wife, Nellie of Clemmons; eight grandchildren, Pam Smothers and husband, Skip, Beverly Holbrook and husband, Scott, Brian McGlamery and wife, Brandi, Steven Edwards and wife, Karen, Tracy Hale and husband, Gregory, Rhonda Henderson and husband, Mike, Rodney Norman, Mechelle Reinhardt and husband, Wayne; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Archie Norman and Vernon Norman, both of Winston-Salem; and three sisters, Merdie Harper of Winston-Salem, Lucy Staley of Tobaccoville, and Julia Lowrimore of Raleigh. PETROS
Mr. Ernest John Petros, 65, of 860 Somerset Drive, Winston-Salem, died Saturday, September 25, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born November 9, 1933 in New York City, N.Y. to John and Sophia Pruzynsha Petros. He graduated from the State University of New York and attended U.C.L.A.- Santa Monica and Wake Forest University. Mr. Petros was associated with Western Electric Co., Larson & Larson Architects, and was a Real Estate Broker, and an instructor at Forsyth Technical Community College prior to his retirement as Vice-President of C.E.W. Distributing Co. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, George and Spiro Petros. Surviving are his wife, Julie Wolfe Petros of the home; a daughter, Terry P. Moody and husband, Gary E. Moody, Jr. of Winston-Salem; a son, Michael J. Petros and wife, Amy R. Petros of Clemmons; three grandsons, Nicholas, Isaac, and William Moody; a sister, Mrs. Helen Straligakis and husband, Ted of Pargadikis Halkidikis, Greece; a brother, Peter J. Petros and wife Rose of Boca Raton, Fla., and a sister-in-law, Joan Petros of Wimberly, Texas. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. on Sept . 28, 1999 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Dr. Worth Green officiating. ROBERTS
Edgar Parsons Roberts, of 3 Graylyn Place, died Friday morning, Sept . 24, 1999 after a long illness. He was born Sept . 23, 1923 to William Morsell Roberts and Anne Parsons Roberts in Lynchburg, Virginia. His attendance at the University of Virginia was interrupted by World War II. He served four years in the Navy, mainly in the Pacific with the Seabees. Following the war, he returned to graduate from the University of Virginia, followed by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Recruited by Wachovia Bank, he moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. in 1951. He retired from the trust department of Wachovia Bank as a Senior Vice President after thirty-four years of service. A lifelong Episcopalian, he served St. Paul's church in numerous ways. He also served the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina as chairman of the investment committee. He was active on the board of the United Way and served for many years on Forsyth County's Board for Forsyth Home, Inc. (Knollwood Hall). He helped get Winston-Salem Tennis, Inc. started and was an early president. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Morsell Roberts, Jr. of Lynchburg, Va. He is survived by his wife, Adele (Della) Watkins Roberts; their children, Edgar Parsons Roberts, Jr. and his wife, Margaret Leckie Roberts of Winston-Salem, Clifford Kent Roberts and his wife, Sara Zwinger Roberts of Portland, Ore., and Adele Roberts Clark of Winston-Salem; and his grandchildren, Margaret Leckie Roberts, Adele Watkins Roberts, Cullen Roberts Clark, and Sally Ann Roberts. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept . 27, 1999 at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. SHELTON
Mrs. Dorothy Shelf Payne Shelton, 89, of 5789 Brookway Drive, passed away on Friday, September 24, 1999 at the Springwood Care Center of Forsyth, following a period of illness. She was a native of Stokes County, born on April 27, 1910, the daughter of the late Cora B. Reynolds and James Taylor Shelf. Mrs. Shelton was a member of the United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Gospel Choir. She retired in 1972 from Bobbitt's Pharmacy. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James William, George Washington, Oscar Edward, Chollie Roberts, Givins Taylor, Jr., and Coy Allen Shelf; her husband, Norman P. Shelton; and her daughter, Helen F. Smith Sykes. She is survived by her grandchildren, Ellen S. (James) Miles, Charles H. (Barbara) Smith, and Norvell B. (Sharon) Smith; great-grandchildren, Sonya Watts, Charles Smith, III, Damean, Stephanie, and Cherese Smith, and Norvell Baker; five great-great-grandchildren; special friends, Elizabeth Jackson, Margaret S. Mitchell, and Susie Pinkney; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with Dr. J. Mrs. Josephine Ashe White, 78, of 775-F Carl Russell Avenue passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 1999 at her residence. She was a native of Winston-Salem, born on February 9, 1921 and lived in Chicago, Ill. for many years. She was a retired employee of the Campbell Soup Company. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cletis White. She is survived by two cousins, Reverend William T. (Rosa) Richardson of Charlotte and George Richardson of Winston-Salem; and other relatives and friends. Mrs. Martha Nannie Thompson Whiteheart, 85, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, September 26, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born August 11, 1914 in Saltville, Va. to Chris and Alice Moore Thompson. Mrs. Whiteheart was a member of Salem Baptist Church for over 30 years and was a member of the Ladies Missionary Circle. She was a Sunday School teacher for 50 years and was a Housemother at Piedmont Bible College for 25 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Nosmo Whiteheart; two brothers, Harry and Bill Thompson; and one sister, Mrs. Haskel Hutchins. Surviving are her son, Rev. Richard Whiteheart and wife, Linda, of Winston-Salem; her daughter, Joan Whiteheart of Mayaguaz, Puerto Rico; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Bea Timmons of Florida and Mrs. Hazel Long of Winston-Salem. NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Mabel Brown Adams, 96, of North Pine Street, North Wilkesboro, died on Saturday, September 25, 1999 at the Wilkes Regional Medical Center. She was born on October 17, 1902 to William Avery and Molly Absher Brown. She was a member of Center Baptist Church. Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie and Claude Brown; and two sisters, Ellen Faw and Grace Dearman. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia B. Adams and Bernice Kilby, both of Wilkesboro; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 27, 1999 at Rein-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Alfred E. Andrews, Jr. and Rev. Phil Chapman officiating. CLODFELTER
Mr. George D. Clodfelter, Jr. of 4089 Wallburg Rd., Winston-Salem, died at Forsyth Medical Center on September 24, 1999. He was born in Forsyth County to George D. Clodfelter, Sr. and Jessie Brown Clodfelter on June 26, 1916. Mr. Clodfelter was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 43 years, retiring in 1978. He was a charter member of Union Cross Baptist Church and was dedicated to the work of the church and served faithfully. On April 6, 1940 he married Norrine Williard, who survives him. They were married for 59 years. He is survived also by one daughter, Lynn C. Hayes and her husband, Dr. Johnnie R. Hayes of Kernersville, and one grandson, Jason D. Hayes of Los Angeles, Calif., whom he loved dearly. Also surviving are a sister, Ruth C. Patterson and her husband, Tom B. Patterson of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Selma Clodfelter and Inez Motsinger, both of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Diana C. Graham and Paula M. Meyncke; and a nephew, Brown Clodfelter. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, September 27, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Union Cross Baptist Church with interment to follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday evening at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville.
