HELTON
EAST BEND — Mr. Harry Lee Helton, 92, of 2628 Rockett Road, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Yadkin County on Aug. 5, 1908, to Charles Walter and Mary Branon Helton. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Bill Helton and a sister, Georgia Horton. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Inez Cornelius Helton of the home; two daughters, Joan Helton (Edward) Hobson of Raleigh and Margaret Helton (Leon) Wooten of East Bend; four sisters, Gladys Hoots of Hamptonville, Ina Wagoner of Elkin, Hattie Weatherman of Winston-Salem and Mary Hazel Helton of Yadkinville; five grandchildren, John E. (Shirley) Hobson of Raleigh, Gregory H. (Diana) Hobson of Lynchburg, Va., Robin Wooten of Greensboro, Sherry Wooten of Charlotte and Alison (Kent) Shore of Knoxville, Tenn.; and seven great-grand-children, Lauren Hobson, Sandi Hobson, Jake Hobson, Chad Hobson, Lindsay Shore, Travis Shore and Nicholas Wooten. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday Feb. 2, 2001, at the Union Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenny Gooden. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. HICKMAN
Mr. Mitchell B. Hickman, aka Scooter, 38, of 410 E. 33rd St. passed away Saturday night at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Hickman was born Sept. 19, 1962, in Forsyth County to the late Moses and Azalee Hickman. He graduated from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system and was a former employee of Trenwest Restaurant. Surviving are a daughter, Bryana McCorkie; two sisters, Doris (Julius) Clark and Audrey Hickman of Winston-Salem; nieces, including a special niece, Christie, Monica, Aisha and Tayla of Winston-Salem; nephews Kierre and Darren of Winston-Salem; great-nieces Jamilia, Monique and Destiny; great-nephew Trenton; a special cousin, Mike Hickman; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and other relatives. Funeral services will be held 3 p. m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Douthit’s Visitation Center, 2920 Greenway Ave. with Evangelist Parthenia Galloway officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service, from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at Douthit’s Visitation Center. KING — Mr. Grady C. Hooker, 70, of Tom Smith Road, Westfield died at his home Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001. He was born July 13, 1930, in Surry County to Arlis and Sadie Jessup Hooker. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Tracie Stewart Hooker of the home; two daughters, Nancy Hooker Mulwee (Charles) Draughn of Siloam and Sue Hooker Sutphin of King; four grandchildren, Michelle Mulwee Carter, Michael Shane Mulwee, Brian Christopher and Gregory Allen Sutphin; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Earlene (A.G.) Watson of Greensboro, Doris (Billy) Easter, Vernona Mabe and Mildred Bennett, all of Mount Airy; and four brothers, Roger (Margie) Hooker of Martinsville, Va., Cleotha Hooker of Mount Airy, Stewart (Bonnie) Hooker and Larry Hooker of Westfield. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Hooker. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home in King with the Rev. John T. Byerly and the Rev. LEXINGTON — Frances Pricilla Jordan '`Fran’‘ James, 68, of 1375 Old Mill Farm Road died Jan. 31, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Dr. Stephen Martin. Burial will be in Good Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. James was born Sept. 26, 1932, in Madison County, Tenn. to Warren Anderson and Mary Gladys Dennie Jordan and had lived in Davidson County most of her life. She formerly owned and operated Fran’s Beauty Salon and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Bradley Charles King. Surviving are her husband, Chester C. James of the home; sisters Betty Joyce Jordan of Lexington and Shirley J. Martin of Thomasville; and brothers Charles K. Jordan and Raymond E. Jordan of Lexington. The family will be at Piedmont Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

MIDWAY — Iris Lee McCrary Jessup, 72, of Old Highway 52 died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at her home after declining health. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at Bethesda United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Dr. James White will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. She was born March 9, 1928, in Davidson County to Joseph Franklin McCrary and Mentie Kinney McCrary. She was a homemaker. Surviving are her twin son and daughter: son Walter Howard Jessup Jr. and his wife Delaney of Hickory; daughter Lisa Ann Jessup Woods and her husband Todd of Clemmons; five grandchildren, Clay Bradley Fillers of Charlotte, Todd Randall Woods Jr. of Boone, Michael David Smith of Raleigh, Andrew Thomas Smith and Nicholas Bradley Smith of Hickory; and sisters Ruth Deitz, Frances Townsend, Betty McCrary and Nancy McCrary all of Lexington and Peggy Freedle of Welcome. KERNERSVILLE — Mr. Frank Dare Johnson, 69, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. He had been in declining health for several years. He was born Oct. 4, 1931, in Stokes County a son of Coy and Vernie Johnson. On May 27, 1949, he married Peggy Sue Bryant, who survives of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Samuel Hoover Johnson. Also surviving are his son, Rodney O. Johnson and wife Kay; his brother, Coy Johnson Jr. and wife Eula Grey; two granddaughters, Kayla and Breanna; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home by the Rev. Sam Murphy. MOUNT AIRY Mr. Timothy Dale Kirkman, 38, of 220 Welcome Church Road died at Northern Hospital of Surry County early Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, 2001. Mr. Kirkman was born June 13, 1962, in Surry County to Madeline Pruitt Kirkman and the late Ellis Kirkman. Mr. Kirkman was of the Brethren faith. Surviving are his mother, Madeline P. Kirkman of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Gary Doss of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Lavonda Kirkman of Mount Airy; and a nephew, Justin Kirkman of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001 at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, con-ducted by the Rev. Marvin Wade and Elder J. C. Kirkman. KOZLOWSKI
Mr. Stanley John Kozlowski, 86, of the Brookridge Retirement Community, formerly of Chicago, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. Stan was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was the beloved husband of Margaret Ellen Stallings Kozlowski and the father of Stanley John Kozlowski and wife Shirley of Houston, Texas. Also surviving are two fine grandsons, Mitchell Kozlowski of the U.S. Air Force and Matthew Kozlowski and wife Sandra of Houston, Texas, the parents of Stan’s dear great-granddaughter, Sierra. Also surviving are two brothers, Lenny Kozlowski and wife Jean of Lady Lake, Fla., and Ed Kozlowski and wife Virginia and a sister, Florence, all of Chicago. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by the Rev. Gordon Tyler Talton Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church, P.O. MADISON — Mrs. Janet Griffin Lawson, 87, of 240 Oak Crest Drive died Wednesday, Jan. 31 2001. She retired after 34 years of teaching at Madison, Pine Hall and Sandy Ridge elementary schools. WALNUT COVE — John Edgar '`Chubby’‘ Martin, 86, died Wednesday at Stokes Reynolds Hospital in Danbury. Mr. Martin was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Patrick County, Va., to the late John Andy and Rosie Lee Heath Martin. He was a farmer and a member of Peters Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jettie Lou Collins Martin, and two sons, Donnie Wayne Martin and Lonnie Martin. Survivors include daughters Ruby and husband William Noel Martin of Lawsonville, Shirley Ann Rom-inger of Walnut Cove, Dorothy and husband Frank Purdy of Walnut Cove and Sue Ellen (Susan) Martin Gattalaro and husband Don of Winston-Salem; sons Ronnie Ray Martin and wife Barbara of Walnut Cove and Jonnie Darell Martin of Winston-Salem; and numerous grand-children and great-grand-children. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Burroughs Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joe Shockley, the Rev. Ralph Mitchell and the Rev. Eugene Payne officiating.
