MARTIN
Viola Beavers Martin, the widow of Charles I. Martin, departed this life Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, after an extended stay at the Meadowbrook Terrace Assisted Living facility in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Martin, one of nine children born to Jefferson Franklin and Idella Arnold Beavers, was born in College Park, Ga., on Sept. 11, 1908. After completing her undergraduate studies, she moved to North Carolina in order to accept her first teaching position. Returning home to Atlanta, after five years as a teacher in North Carolina, she attended and graduated from the Atlanta University School of Social Work. Receiving her master’s degree in social work, Mrs. Martin began her career as a social worker in Atlanta and continued that illustrious career of more than 21 years as a social worker in the Family Service Agency in Winston Salem as a child-welfare caseworker, with emphasis on securing foster homes and arranging for the adoption of more than 80 orphans, at one point, for whom she was responsible on a daily basis. She dearly loved children, even though she was not blessed with any of her own. One of her favorite Biblical verses was Psalm 113:9: He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful Mother of children. Praise ye the Lord. In 1996, after retirement as an agency social worker, Mrs. Martin served, as a result of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s '`Great Society Plan,’‘ in the capacity of school social worker for six additional years with the school system, which again involved working with children. Mrs. Martin also served as a public member on the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry and was a loyal supporter of the Republican Party. Religious service included more than 50 years of service as a dutiful member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church at 810 N. Highland Ave., during which time she served as president of Episcopal Church Women and as a faithful wife of one of the senior wardens. Leaving to cherish her memories are a sister, Ola M. Beavers Thurston of Winston-Salem and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family requests that either flowers or memorial gifts be sent to St. Stephens Episcopal Church.
