STEVENS
WESTFIELD — Mrs. Stacie Simmons Stevens, 84, of Route 1, Westfield, the widow of Neal Wallace Stevens Sr., passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Hospital. She was born Aug. 21, 1916, in Stokes County to George Washington and Virginia (Jennie) George Simmons. Mrs. Stevens was a homemaker and a member of Brown Mountain Baptist Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Sandra Stevens of Jamestown and two grandchildren, Corey Cuthrell and husband Jonathan of Sneads Ferry and Katherine Stevens of Chapel Hill. Funeral services for Mrs. Stevens will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Fred Chilton. Interment will be at Brown Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. STIGALL
KERNERSVILLE — Emma Mae Stigall, 72, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born in Forsyth County on June 13, 1928, the daughter of John G. and Fannie (Pendry) Fletcher. Mrs. Stigall was a lifelong member of Union Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Mock, in 1988 and by her husband, Calvin Edd Stigall, on Jan. 15, 2001. Survivors include her daughters, Sue Hill and husband Ed and Penny Cox and husband Marty of Kernersville; a son, John Stigall and wife Sandi of Kernersville; a sister, Kathleen Cox and a brother, Jaxe Fletcher of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John C. Woods officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel, Kernersville, and other times at the residence of her daughter, Penny Cox, 9480 Glen Cross Drive, Kernersville. RAEFORD — Nannie M. Ashburn, 97, of 214 N. Wright St. died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Ashburn was born in Surry County April 14, 1903, to the late Clevo and Della Simpson Ashburn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Ashburn; her daughter, Edith Davis; her son, Melvin Ashburn; and her grandson, Michael Anthony. Mrs. Ashburn was a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church and the Pearl S. Cole Sunday school class. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Raeford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Vaughan officiating. Burial will be in the Raeford Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at Crumpler Funeral Home in Raeford. Surviving are three daughters, Betty A. Upchurch of Durham, Margie A. Mrs. Kathryn Hilker '`Grandma’‘ Barber, 75, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at her home. She was born May 11, 1925, in Winston-Salem to Arthur Henry Hilker and Katie Leigh Hilker. She was a member of Home Moravian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of and had taught the adult Bible class. Kathryn graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School where she was a member of the baseball team. She was a secretary for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system for 23 years. She was a den mother for Boy Scout Troop 22 and was a member of the Winston-Salem Shrine Club, Nobells. Kathryn was a devoted wife, homemaker and mother. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Earl Eugene Barber of the home; a brother, Robert Richard Hilker, his wife Juanita of Cornelius; a son, Gene Barber and his wife Dianne and their daughter, Jenny of Gastonia; a son, Art Barber, his wife Susan and their daughter, Jamie and son Brandon of Boone; a son, Bert Barber, his wife Terry and their daughter Stacey of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Arthur Henry Hilker Jr. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at Home Moravian Church in Old Salem by Dr. Gerald Harris and the Rev. Mrs. Mary Leigh Kester Barnhardt, 65, of Graceland Living Center in King died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Barnhardt was born Jan. 20, 1936, to Lindsay Bryan and Margaret Hartsell Kester. A graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, she attended Greensboro Woman’s College and graduated from the University of Miami. Mrs. Barnhardt was a social worker for Forsyth County and did volunteer work for the Girl Scouts of America. She was a former circle leader at Centenary United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Mrs. Barnhardt is survived by a daughter, Mary Margaret Barnhardt and husband Rick J. Lasker of Richmond, Va.; a son, Max Lloyd Barnhardt III of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Maggie and Cameron; and a sister, Miss Margaret Anne Kester. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. WALNUT COVE — Mrs. Gladys Marshall Carroll, 88, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Walnut Cove Healthcare. She was born in Forsyth County to the late Vick O. and Anna Boles Marshall. She was a homemaker and member of St. Mark United Methodist Church. Her husband, Glenn B. Carroll, preceded her in death in 1983. Surviving are her daughter, Donna Fulp and husband Ira '`Buddy’‘ of Walnut Cove; three sisters, Alma Morgan of Walnut Cove, Lorraine Bowman of Germanton and Margaret Culpepper of Gibsonville; two grandsons, David G. Fulp and wife Diann of Germanton and Alan Fulp and wife Laura of Walnut Cove; a special niece, Elizabeth Hice; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A 2:30 p.m. funeral service will be held Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Burroughs Funeral Home. Burial will follow in St. Mark United Methodist Church Cemetery. COOLEEMEE — Miss Mariola Crawford, 83, formerly of Ruffin St. died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Cooleemee United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Collins and the Rev. Sandra Martin officiating. Interment will be in Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. They request memorials be considered for Cooleemee United Methodist Church, 132 Woodhaven Lane, Mocksville, NC 27028. Miss Crawford was born Oct. 5, 1917, in Davie County to the late J.G. and Lola Carter Crawford and was a teacher in Davie County schools for 43 years. She was a member of Cooleemee United Methodist Church, where she served as organist and choir director for many years, recipient of the Lifetime Appreciation Award for the Davie County Arts Council, and a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Mocksville chapter, where she was also organist for many years. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Giles (Amy C.) Myers of Cooleemee, Frances C. Wainio of Marblehead, Ohio and Edna C. Harding of Charlotte; a brother, John Grier (Mary Lou) Crawford Jr. of Harrisonburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

MADISON — Mr. Robert '`Bobby’‘ Dunlap, 67, of 3440 U.S. 311 died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at the VA Hospital in Salisbury. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Knollhurst Cemetery. He was born in Rockingham County to Phil and Eva Hatcher Dunlap June 2, 1933. Mr. Dunlap served in the U.S. Air Force at Mildenhall Air Force Base in Cambridge, England from 1951 to 1959. He was owner and founder of Dunlap’s Grill and Grocery. He worked for the N.C. DMV from 1978 to 1988. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cheryl Lynn; and a grandson, Marshall Randolph Williams. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joan Offiler Dunlap of the home; a son, Gary Lee Dunlap and Jean of Sandy Ridge; two daughters, Vanessa Ann Dunlap and Lisa Dunlap Bowden of Madison; a very precious granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Dunlap of the home; a brother, Lee Edward '`Buddy’‘ Dunlap of Walnut Cove; and four special nieces. William Kedar Gandhi, infant son of Sanjay Gandhi and Lauren Adams Gandhi, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Kedar was born Jan. 30, 2001. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister and brother, Asha Brooke Gandhi and Rajan Drew Gandhi of the home; his paternal grandparents, Raj and Bharati Gandhi of Dunwoody, Ga.; his maternal grandparents, William and Marian Adams of Kingsport, Tenn.; and many loving uncles, aunts and cousins. A private family service will be held Saturday, with the Rev. Jeff White and Pandit Dilip Gore officiating.

KERNERSVILLE — Mr. Walter Lawrence Griffin Sr., 75, of 447 Hastings Hill Road died Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at his home. He was born July 30, 1925, in Forsyth County a son of Jesse Ben and Annie Mitchell Griffin. He retired in 1982 from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Fern Plonk Griffin of the home; a son, Walter Lawrence Griffin Jr. and his wife Randie of Wallburg; a sister, Mrs. Edith G. Crowder of Norfolk, Va.; and two grandchildren, Amanda Lynn Griffin and Justin Lawrence Griffin. Graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Winston-Salem, by Pastor Danny Smith. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at J.C.
