He was a native of Scotland County, son of the late Jospeh E. and Sophronie Herring Campbell, attended Wingate and Wake Forest universities, received his master of divinity from Southeastern Seminary, doctorate from Luther Rice Seminary, Jacksonville, Fla., retired from First Baptist Church, High Shoals, served in churches in North and South Carolina, Army veteran, a Mason.
