He was a native of Aurora, son of the late David Leon and Lillian James Lewis Stubbs Sr., earned his associate’s degree from Brevard College in 1938, received his bachelor’s degree in 1940 and his Master of Divinity degree from Duke University in 1943, United Methodist minister for 36 years, serving in the Western North Carolina Conference, served churches in Gastonia, Shelby, Denton, Greensboro, Kernersville and Winston-Salem, continued to serve as a retired minister after retiring in 1979.
