Rev. Walter A. Coggin
BELMONT - The Right Rev. Walter A. Coggin, O.S.B., Ph.D., 83, the third Abbot-Ordinary of Belmont Abbey Nullius, died Dec. 28, 1999. He was a native of Richmond, Va., son of the late Walter A. Coggin and Mary Veronica Moshay, graduated from Sacred Heart Grammar School, Richmond, attended Benedictine High School, graduated from Loyola High School, Los Angeles, in 1934 and entered Belmont Abbey College, entered monastic life in 1936, making his novitiate at Saint Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, Penn., professed his vows as a monk at Belmont Abbey in 1937, completed undergraduate studies at St. Benedict’s College, Atchison, Kansas, did seminary studies at Belmont Abbey Seminary, ordained to priesthood at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Richmond, in 1943, celebrated golden jubilee of priestly ordination in 1993 and his diamond jubilee of monastic profession in 1997, postgraduate studies taken at UNC Chapel Hill, earned M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy at the Catholic University of America, taught algebra in Belmont Abbey Preparatory School and philosophy in Belmont Abbey College, prefect of students, coached prep football team, The Ramblers, and basketball teams, while serving as Novice Master was elected in 1956 to serve as Vicar to the Right Reverend Vincent Taylor, O.S.B., elected Abbot Nullius of Belmont Abbey in 1960, served as a Father of the Second Vatican Council, oversaw the implementation of the decrees of the council, guided a complete renovation of the Abbey Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, served as ex-officio Chancellor and President of Belmont Abbey College, resigned office of Abbot in 1970, served as Professor of Philosophy at Belmont Abbey College until fall semester of 1999.
