Childers, graduated with honors from Compact High School, studied nursing at Winston-Salem State University on a scholarship from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, undergraduate honors include National Citizenship Award and Student Nurse of the Year, received master’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill, nurse in psychiatry, obstetrics, pediatrics and surgery, served on nursing staff of Mercy Hospital, taught nursing at East Tennessee State University, assistant professor of nursing at UNC Charlotte and had the distinction of having all her nursing students pass their boards for three consecutive years, served as director of patient education and as a training officer for the Mecklenburg Health Dept., member of the American Nurse’s Assoc., National League for the Care of Children in Hospitals, American Assoc. for University Professors, Hospice Inc. of Charlotte, Sigma Theta Tau Nurses National Honor Society, American National Red Cross, Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes Assoc., Mental Health, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the choir, retirees organization, women’s organization, Action Faction Circle of Presbyterian Women, former member of the Stewardship Committee, after being diagnosed with lupus she devoted her life to educating the public about her condition, spoke to health, church and civic groups, recognized as a pioneer in lupus education in Ebony Magazine.
