He was a native of Charlotte, son of the late Lon M. and Lula Arthurs Smith, brother of the late Gordon and Margaret Smith, Janie Smith Harper, Marion Smith Houston, attended Charlotte schools and Brevard College, Navy veteran, served with Navy Seabees in WWII from 1942-1945, employed in cotton waste business with Baugh and Moche and New England Waste Company in Charlotte and Caldwell Waste in Gastonia, avid gardener, member of First United Methodist Church, member of Seapark Sunday School class.
