LELAND — Clarence Onslow Ballard, 93, Brunswick Cove Nursing Home, formerly of Gastonia, died Jan. 16, 2000, at his residence.
He was a native of Lincoln County, son of the late James Warren and Mittie Benfield Ballard, husband of the late Mabel Virginia Garrison Ballard, father of the late William Warren Ballard, brother of the late Alma Helton, Evelyn Walker, Buford and Malcom Ballard, retired from the City of Gastonia after 30 years of service, participated in construction of Fontana Dam, lumberjack in Virginia’s logging industry, served in U.S. Home Guard, now known as National Guard, during the Loray Mill strike in 1929, present when Gastonia Police Chief Aderholt was shot and killed, former member of First Baptist Church and East Baptist Church.
