He was a native of Gastonia, son of the late Walker Reid Jr., brother of the late Alfred and Roland Reid, graduated from Highland High School in 1958, received a degree in criminal justice from the University of Central Texas in 1985, graduating with honors, member of Alpha Phi Sigma, member of Northside Baptist Church, served in Army from 1958 to March 1982, retired as an E-7, employed with the Texas Department of Corrections for 17 years.
