GASTONIA - J. Mack Holland Jr., 85, Covenant Village, 1351 Robinwood Road, died Jan. 18, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late J. Mack Sr. and Alice Boyden Holland, attended local city schools, graduated from Davidson College in 1934, member of its men’s varsity basketball team, president of the "D" Club, member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and O.D.K. Leadership Society, graduated from Duke University Law School in 1937 and president of his senior class, lieutenant in the Coast Guard during World War II, assigned to the amphibious Pacific theater, served with distinction as Beach Master in six combat landings including the Aleutian, Gilbert and Marshall Islands and Saipan, awarded Presidential Citation Medal for meritorious service in the face of enemy fire, lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Gastonia, where he was a past member and chairman of its administrative board, past chairman of pastoral committee, personnel committee, finance committee, church board of trustees, Sunday school teacher and chairman of the endowment trustees for its first 10 years, Eagle Scout and former Scoutmaster of Troop 11, past president Gastonia Civitan Club and Gastonia Jaycees, member and former president of Gaston Country Club, past chairman of Salvation Army Board, Gaston County Chapter of the American Red Cross and Gaston County American Cancer Society, member Duke Law School Alumni Council 1969-1972, North Carolina Local Government Commission 1976-1979, recipient of the 1997 Civitan Club’s award as the Outstanding Citizen of Gastonia, practiced law in Gastonia from 1938 until his retirement in 1983, of counsel and co-founder of Alala, Mullen, Holland & Cooper, P.A. law firm, city attorney from 1955-1976, member of Gaston County Bar Association (president 1949), North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association (member of board of governors 1966-1972, president 1970-1971), past chairman Mandatory CLE, Commercial, Banking and Business Law, and of John J. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Genevieve "Ginger" Bolte, 86, formerly of Pennsville, N.J., died Jan. 16, 2000, at White Oak Manor Nursing Center. She was a native of Crocket, Va., daughter of the late John B. and Laura Rogers Neal, wife of the late Joseph T. Bolte, sister of the late Blanche Miller and Richard Neal,longtime Pennsville resident, moved to North Carolina in 1994 to live with her daughter.
