He was a native of Bessemer City, son of the late Floyd and Wilma Armstrong, retired ordained United Methodist minister who served in a number of churches for 44 years, graduated Tryon High School, Bessemer City, Brevard College, Wofford College, received his Master of Divinity degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Pastor Emeritus at McKendree United Methodist Church, director Brotherhood/Sisterhood of the United Methodist Church for the Western N.C. Conference, active duty chaplain in the Army from 1966-1970, stockade chaplain in western Europe, served for 22 years as an Army reserve chaplain, retired at the rank of colonel as division chaplain for the 108th division in Charlotte.
