He was a native of Rutherford County, husband of the late Essie "Sug" Davis, son of the late John Ed Sr. and Mattie Hamrick Davis, brother of the late Walter Davis and Annie Davis Lewis, attended Wake Forest University, graduated with honors from N.C. State University with a degree in vocational agriculture, taught agriculture for two years at Mooresboro High School, served in the U.S. Army from 1942-45, worked for the Farmers Home Administration in Cleveland County for 31 years, attended First Baptist Church, deacon, department superintendent of the young married, usher, training union sponsor, chairman of the welfare committee, president of the Christian Service Organization at Gardner-Webb University, member of Cleveland County Social Services Board, on board of directors for Habitat for Humanity, the Council on Aging and Hawaii Baptist Academy, Honolulu, chairman of the Piedmont Council of Boy Scouts of America, trustee of the Cleveland County Memorial Library, organized and served as chairman of Cleveland County’s Red Cross blood program, chairman of Cleveland County Chapter of American Cancer Society and Housing Committee of the Piedmont Area Development Association, officer on the Senior Center board, co-supervisor for the construction of the homeless shelter, chairman of the board of directors that created Lions Senior Village, lifetime member of the Shelby Lions Club and Lions Club International, held many positions there including district governor, president of the North Carolina Eye and Human Tissue Bank, chairman of the North Carolina Association for the Blind and the White Cane Drive, recipient of Governor’s Volunteer Award, Shelby’s Citizen of the Year and Jaycee’s Distinguished Service award.

CHARLOTTE - Brigadier John Roy Jones, 85, died Feb. 11, 2000. He was a native of Corliss, W. Va., served in the Salvation Army for 17 years in Petersburg, Va., Danville, Va., Richmond, Va., Roanoke, Va., Beckley W. Va., eight years in Fort Smith, Ark., city commander in Memphis, Tenn. and Chattanooga, Tenn., Greensboro and Gastonia, he conducted services, oversaw Boys Clubs, social services, transient lodge, Christmas programs, he is know for his 35 years of Salvation Army photography throughout the South, 1947 delegate to the first Salvation Army Brengle Institute in Chicago, 1965 representative of the Salvation Army at its 100th anniversary in London, member of Kiwanis Club since 1942 including 20 years with Mecklenburg Kiwanis Club, numerous tenures as a Kiwanis officer, Tablet of Honor Award recipient.
