CHARLOTTE - Sister Mary Barbara Sullivan, RSM, 74, died Feb. 5, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte.
She was a native of Corinth, Miss., daughter of the late John Daniel Sullivan and Julia Barbara Flowers, step-daughter of the late J.W. Jamison, received as a Sister of Mercy on Aug. 15, 1950, studied voice and piano at Salem College, Winston-Salem, graduate of Belmont Abbey College and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, received her degree as a registered nurse in 1947, Navy veteran, served in the U.S. Naval Nurse Corps, received master’s degree in education administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1965, ministry assignments included supervisory posts in orthopedic and surgical nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Asheville, and Mercy Hospital, Charlotte, teacher and principal at various North Carolina Catholic schools, acting executive secretary of Elementary Department for National Catholic Educational Association in Washington, D.C., first director of field services for the NCEA, director of adult education, held several positions in the Diocese of Charlotte, served as coordinator of federal programs and special projects, superintendent of Catholic schools, first religious sister to hold a political office in North Carolina when she was elected to the Belmont City Council, Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Belmont, former president and chief executive officer of Catherine’s House, a transitional shelter for women and children,volunteer paralegal advocate at Legal Services of the Southern Piedmont, served as the southern states’ representative to the National Catholic Education Association, served on many board of directors, including the Charlotte Diocesan Board of Education, Sacred Heart Campus School Board of Education, Sacred Heart College Board of Trustees, Southern Piedmont Health Systems Agency, South Point Lifesaving Crew, board member for the Gaston County Council on Aging, the state and local division of the American Cancer Society, House of Mercy, Legal Services of the Southern Piedmont and the NC Low Income Housing Coalition, chaired the Belmont Housing Authority Board of Directors and served on the editorial advisory board of the magazine "Highlights for Children," twice nominated for the Gaston County Outstanding Woman of the Year award, nominated for the distinguished Women of North Carolina award, TBS/Sprint Century of Women Special Achievement, awarded the NCEA Presidential Award for Outstanding Service to Catholic Education, received the prestigious Carpathian Award for Personal Advocacy, awarded by North Carolina Equity, Working for North Carolina Women and Families, named Belmont’s Citizen of the Year in 1998, avid sports fan.
