LEXINGTON — C. Austin "Whitey" Smith, 76, died Feb. 1, 2000, at Centerclair Nursing Home.
He was a native of Pickens County, S.C., son of the late Claude Franklin and Ina Revis Smith, husband of the late Margaret Morris Smith, brother of the late Edward Smith, graduated from Pickens High School, Gardner-Webb College, and Catawba College with a minor in social studies, received master’s in education administration from Appalachian State University, taught and coached at Churchland School from 1950-1957, principal at Polkville High School in Cleveland County from 1957-1960, with Lexington City schools as principal at Eanes Elementary from 1960-1968, principal with Davidson County schools at Hasty Elementary from 1968-1980, member, past deacon and Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church, Davidson County commissioner from 1974-1978, served on board of Community General Hospital, Thomasville, Navy veteran of World War II, served in South Pacific, spotter for Woody Durham at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill games and with Harold Bowen at Lexington Senior High School games, member of Lexington Masonic Lodge 473, Lexington Shrine Club, served as past president, secretary and ambassador, Oasis Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite, Charlotte, VFW Post 3074, American Legion Post 8, past post commander and adjutant, Amvets Post 13.
