She was a native of Gaston County, daughter of the late William R. and Addie Black Rhyne, wife for 57 years of the late Tollie Harold Thompson Jr., retired Gaston County Schools teacher after 44 years, graduate of Stanley High School, attended Lenoir Rhyne College, graduated from Appalachian State University, former member of the Alpha Eta Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary teacher’s sorority, National Education Association, North Carolina Education Association, member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Belmont.
