He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late William Henry and Maude Stewart Carpenter, husband of the late Evelyn Wofford Carpenter, brother of the late Sarah Christine Carpenter Newton, retired co-owner and operator of Roy and Troy Grocery, fire chief for City of Cherryville for 30 years, member of First Baptist Church of Cherryville, Cherryville Lions Club for 30 years, 1931 graduate of Cherryville High School, former member of Knights of Pythians, Woodmen of the World, served on Cherryville School Board from 1945 to 1955, served at CC Camp during World War II.
