Ashley High School, life member of Faith United Methodist Church, served on various boards and committees, taught Charles Mack Sunday School Class, employed part-time at Gastonia Municipal Golf Course in the pro shop, square dance caller for Swinging Stars Dance Club and Hardin Yellow Rockers, Army and Air Force veteran.

CLOVER, S.C. — Martin A. Ramsey, 76, 107 Pinewood Drive, died March 13, 2000, at Courtland Terrace, Gastonia.
He was a native of Chester County, S.C., son of the late Wade H. and Nell Sims Ramsey, member of Clover Presbyterian Church, Navy veteran of World War II, served in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, earned Bachelor’s Degree from Erskine College, graduate degrees from University of South Carolina, retired in 1980 as superintendent of York County District Two Schools, served in public education for 31 years, began career as principal and coach at Floyd High School, Horry County, athletic field named in his honor, served in administrative positions in Fairfield County, Lexington District Five and Berkeley County District Two, educator on county, state and national levels, named Outstanding Educator in York County in 1975, served as adjunct professor at Winthrop University in 1976-77, honors include president of Berkeley County Education Association and Fairfield County Education Association, member of Selection Committee for Carolina Scholars Program of U.S.C., one of 40 superintendents in the U.S. selected to attend a National Superintendent’s Work Conference at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, New York, member of Beta Council of S.C. for three years, active community leader, served on board of directors for Southern Bank and Trust Company and First Union National Bank, member of Clover Lion’s Club, served on Recreation Committee for Town of Clover, chapter chairman for Erskine Living Endowment, board member of Cripple Children’s Society, Fairfield County Chairman for Heart Association, worked to provide financial support for educational and recreational programs in school district, a new high school, extensive school renovations, enlargement of stadium seats and facilities, summer recreational program, and equitable distribution of York County tax revenue for school purposes, provided leadership for an improved college preparatory program, upgraded curricula at all schools, started a comprehensive program to meet the needs of all handicapped students.

He was a native of Erie, Pa., son of the late Patrick and Louisa Penna Mando, brother of the late Anthony and Frank Mando, Teresa M. Fischer, graduate of East High School, Erie, Army veteran of World War II, served in South Pacific, received A.B. degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College, played basketball, received masters degree in education administration from Appalachian State University, completed sixth year program at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, began teaching career at Taylorsville High School, coached athletics, member of Rotary Club, taught and coached at Arlington Junior High and Frank L. Ashley High schools, principal at William C. Friday Junior High School, retired from Ashbrook High School, served as principal from 1976-1985, longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, deacon, elder, former teacher of Henderlite Men’s Sunday School class.
