BELMONT — Sister Mary Evangelist Nixon RSM, 99, died July 26, 1999, at Sacred Heart Convent. She was a native of Davidson, daughter of the late Sydney Xavier and Katherine Lawing Nixon, birth name was Josephine Clare Nixon, entered the order of the Sisters of Mercy on Dec. 8, 1922, received by Sisters of Mercy on May 27, 1923, took temporary vows on July 19, 1925, made her perpetual profession of vows on July 19, 1928, received an associate degree in secretarial and bookkeeping services in 1921, attended Sacred Heart Academy prior to entrance into the Sisters of Mercy, attended Belmont Abbey College, graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, received R.N. degree in 1928, Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Catholic University, Washington, D.C., in 1940, was in her 76th year as a Sister of Mercy, held positions at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Asheville, and Mercy Hospital, Charlotte, began nursing ministry after graduation in 1928, supervisor of Operating Room at Mercy Hospital for two years, supervisor of Tuberculosis floor at St. Joseph’s Hospital, ministered there from 1930 through 1937, served as night supervisor, supervisor of medical and surgical floors, Obstetrics Department, Obstetrics-Gynecology floors at Charlotte’s Mercy Hospital from 1948 through 1954, director of nurses for Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, director of nursing services and nursing education, member of nominating committee for North Carolina State Nurses’ Association, program chairperson for Alumni of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, vice-chairperson of E.A.C.T. section of District No. 5 State Nurses’ Association, chairperson of nominating committee for Charlotte District Nurses’ Association, assisted with preparing achievement testing for National League of Nurses, received government scholarship to teach cadet student nurses at Catholic University, honored in 1995 with the late Sister Mary Vincent Spencer by their religious community for years of devotion to nursing at Mercy Hospital at a Liturgy held at Sacred Heart Convent, they were also honored in 1997 with a Liturgy celebrating their joint Jubilees as Sisters of Mercy, after retirement remained at Mercy Hospital Convent, visited the sick and distributed medals and prayer cards.
