He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late John Caldwell and Della Medlin Whitesides, husband of the late Grace Bumgardner Whitesides, member of Fraley Memorial Baptist Church, Army veteran, received Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Bronze Arrowhead, served two terms as deacon and elder at Crowders Creek ARP Church.
