He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late Albert and Julia Brooks Shives, brother of the late Marvin Shives, route salesman for 23 years with Charlotte Linen Service, retired from the NC Dept. of Transportation Maintenance Division, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Absher-Flowers Post 9337, Gastonia, Yemassee Tribe 134, where he was a Past Sachem, member of the Baptist faith, Army veteran.

He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late Thomas W. and Alice Friday Garrison Sr., husband of the late Margie Abernathy Garrison, brother of the late Valda Bryson, Yates and T.W. Garrison Jr., loom fixer in the textile industry for many years, helped open a textile plant in Cuba, operated a grocery store on Highway 27 during World War II, part time truck farmer, cut and sold firewood, dedicated flounder fisherman, longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Stanley, where he had served as elder, deacon and former trustee.
