He was the son of the late Thomas and Etta Carpenter Armstrong, retired from Carolina Freight Co. as a dispatcher, Army veteran of World War II, wounded in action in Germany in 1944, winner of two Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal and an Army Occupation Medal.
