He was a native of Hickory, son of the late Carlile Rush and Margaret Helen Riddle Grey, husband of the late Mary Josephine Allen Grey, first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, pilot, veteran of World War II and Korean Conflict, was with Chenault in China, after 45 years of flying he never lost a student, passenger, cargo or commercial aircraft, used his flying skills to propose marriage by bombing his intended’s house with leaflets that stated, "Mary, will you marry me."

She was a native of York County, S.C., daughter of the late Bessie Love and Spencer Henderson Sr., earned her bachelor’s degree from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, her master’s degree in education from Pennsylvania State University, completed 30 hours in school adiminstration at Winthrop University, further studied at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, S.C. and the University of South Carolina in Columbia, classroom teacher of grades one through eight for 40 years in the Gaffney and Rock Hill school districts, principal at Sylvia Circle Elementary School for 11 years, a pioneer for African-American women in Rock Hill, first African-American woman principal and trustee on the Rock Hill School Board, Teacher of the Year at Finley Road Elementary School, local president and community chairwoman for the York County Retired Educators Association, member Union Baptist Church, served as treasurer and secretary, trustee, president of the Gold Plus Club, treasurer for the Senior Missionary Society of the Sandy River Baptist Association Upper Division, traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Canada with her church and other women’s Christian organizations, life member Delta Sigma Theta sorority Inc., 1992 Martin Luther King Jr. award recipient.
