He was a native of Cumberland County, son of the late William Walter and Ethel Cole Gainey, Air Force veteran of World War II, attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, owner of a certified public accounting firm in Charlotte, in 1968 became corporate treasurer of Dover Textiles Inc. (later Doran Textiles), after retirement was active in community affairs, served on the board of Hospice of Cleveland County, Salvation Army, Shelby Rotary Club, member of Wesley Sunday School class at Central United Methodist Church, served on many committees, vital part of board of directors of Dover Foundation Inc., served as treasurer for 32 years.
