She was a native of Onslow County, daughter of the late Johnny V. and Nancy Aman Gurganus, wife of the late James A. Kiser Sr., retired from Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System after more than 20 years of teaching in public schools of North Carolina, graduate of Jacksonville High School, North Carolina College for Women, received Bachelor of Arts Degree, taught at Clinton High School, Clinton, Piedmont and Polkville schools, Cleveland County, Grantham School, Wayne County, Balls Creek School, Catawba County, Statesville Road School, Mecklenburg County, lived in Derita Community from 1956 to 1994 and at the Methodist Home since 1995, active with her husband in church and community work.

He was a native of Stanley, son of the late Claude Y. and Stella Hurley Smith, Marine veteran of World War II, employed by The Bank of Belmont for more than 35 years, senior vice president of Wachovia Bank of Belmont before retirement, served on board of directors of both banks, graduate of The School of Banking of Rutgers University and the Executive Program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, had graduate certificate from The American Institute of Banking, past president of the Belmont Rotary Club, past commander of American Legion Post 144, past secretary of the Belmont Housing Authority, past treasurer of the Belmont Community Organization. He also served on the Gaston County Civil Service Board, advisory boards of Sacred Heart and Mars Hill colleges, member of First United Methodist Church, former deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member of First Baptist Church, Belmont.
