He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late William C. and Nan Carson Ratchford, retired vice president and corporate secretary from Gaston Federal Savings and Loan, Gastonia, Army veteran of World War II, served with the 63rd Infantry Division during the European Theater where he was awarded a Bronze Star, served with the 254th Infantry Battalion with the rank of Sergeant Major, member of First Presbyterian Church, Gastonia, served as a Deacon and Elder and on several committees, member of Henderlite Men’s Bible Class, volunteer for Meals on Wheels from 1982 until 1997, raised in Pisgah Associated Reformed Presbyterian Church, served as Deacon, moved to Belmont in 1948 where he attended First Presbyterian Church, served as Deacon and Elder, began his career at Gaston Federal Savings and Loan in 1960, moved to Gastonia in 1963, member of Gastonia Downtown Kiwanis Club for 20 years.
