He was a native of McAdenville, son of the late Anderson Lewis Helton, member of Unity Baptist Church, Belmont, former member of Lakeview Baptist Church, McAdenville, former Deacon, taught Men’s Bible Class, Army veteran of Korean War, manager for Pharr Yarns, street maintenance manager for the Town of Carolina Beach, star first baseman and later catcher for the McAdenville Reds slow-pitch softball team from the 1940s through the 1960s, member of seven time All Worlds Championship Team, played AA club ball for the St. Louis Cardinals.

She was the daughter of the late William Gordon and Mary Ann Whitworth Hord, wife of the late Frazier P. Patton, John Wotring, spent her early years in Waco, graduate of Waco High School, known by friends and family as "Mud," worked as a receptionist at a private girls school, resided with her second husband in Falls Church, Va., where they were active in Boulevard Baptist Church, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, lived with sister Mary Lou Niven, Albemarle, later moved with her sister to Alterra Sterling House.
