GASTONIA — Haymore Robert Spargo, 84, 1219 E. Craig Ave., died June 4, 2000, at home.
He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late Robert A. and Nancy Beauchamp Spargo, active lifelong member of East Baptist Church, served on Baptismal Committee, taught Sunday school for more than 20 years, volunteered with meals on wheels program, former sergeant in the North Carolina State Guard in the Second Regiment of the 28th Co., former emcee for the Dixie Jazz Band and master of ceremonies for the Wednesday night professional wrestling matches in Charlotte.
He retired from The Gaston Gazette after more than 60 years of service. He began working for the newspaper at age 7, delivering papers on a walking route. He served in various capacities and retired as composing room supervisor.
