She was a native of Gastonia, daughter of the late William Nelson and Mamie Etta Martin Wilson, wife of the late Jake Lester McAteer, honor student and graduate of Kinston High School, Kinston, attended Greenville Teachers College, now East Carolina University, UNC-Chapel Hill, received educational degree from Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College, longtime elementary school teacher in the Gastonia City and Gaston County Public School Systems, taught at Armstrong, East and Wilson Elementary schools, retired in 1972 as a third-grade teacher from Sherwood Elementary School, active member in Gastonia Music Club for many years, served one term as secretary, served 10 years as trustee on the Gaston County Public Library Board of Trustees, member of Main Street Methodist Church, now First United Methodist Church, for more than 70 years, sang in church choir for 40 years, active member of Friendship Club, volunteer at Family Life Center, after World War II taught night classes at Gastonia High School to World War II veterans, volunteer tutor for Gaston Literacy Council for many years, private tutor for children.
