She was a native of Rutherford County, daughter of the late Ensley Broadus and Lucy Anna Parnell Dycus, member of Lighthouse Baptist Church, formerly Providence Baptist Church, founder and volunteer of Gaston Literacy Council, taught 3,600 teachers across the United States and Barbados to teach adult non-readers to read, her purpose in teaching non-readers was to help them read the Bible, former trustee at Gardner-Webb University, Boiling Springs.
